President’s Report

Volleyball Queensland (VQ) achieved yet another year of positive growth in 2014. Our membership grew by 1.9% to 5918 (up from 5809 in 2013). We were again supported through 17 affiliated clubs/associations. The Queensland Government continues to support VQ through its Industry Development Program (QSRIDP). We successfully transitioned through our first year of a three-year QSRIDP funding agreement for 2014-16, noting significant changes to our cash flow under this agreement. Our organisation simply could not operate without the generous support of the Queensland Government, which continues to set the national benchmark in supporting the sports industry and in particular, the community sport sector.

I take this opportunity to thank our 17 affiliated clubs and associations from all over Queensland, as well as the broader range of volleyball stakeholders, for their active engagement in the development of a new constitution for VQ. This started with a facilitated workshop in February and the discussions evolved over the entire year with the volleyball community. My special thanks go to Vice-President, Terry Rudder who led much of the discussion in the regular Presidents’ Commission. The development of an effective and efficient constitution provides VQ with the legal framework and governance structures needed to take our sport forward to meet the challenges of the 21st century while still representing the needs of our members.

Our Queensland Schools Cup series of four events continued at record entry levels. Our state league competition, Premier Volleyball League (PVL), moved this year from Friday nights to Sunday during the daytime and saw the re-introduction of junior divisions. This resulted in a record 52 teams from 10 clubs/associations participating in the PVL competition. The Queensland Beach Volleyball Tour (QBVT) continued to strengthen and grow under Damien Searle’s leadership.

The financial result was very pleasing, with a $9,649 surplus achieved. The Board and the General Manager remain focused on a solid financial base to enable further development of volleyball throughout Queensland.

On the court, Queensland performed well in all four national championships in 2014:

 2nd overall - Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships, Glenelg SA (January 2014) o National Champions U/19 Women – Phoebe Bell & Aggie Kudziela o National Champions U/17 Women – Isabella Dixon & Emma Burton  1st overall - Australian Junior Volleyball Championships, ACT (July 2014) o National Champions U/17 Men Championship – Paul Begg (Coach) o National Champions U/17 Men Challenger Division – Paul Doneley (Coach)  3rd - Women's Australian Volleyball League (Women’s AVL)  1st - Men's Australian Volleyball League (Men’s AVL), which gave us back-to-back titles.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to sincerely thank the Volleyball Queensland staff for their professionalism, dedication & commitment – Jon Gibbs, Damien Searle, Andrew Grant, Will Thwaite, Tyler Hayes, Jenny Burton (retired June 2014), Susan McQuinn, Jill Kelly & Victoria Cameron.

I would also like to thank my fellow Board members for their active contributions during 2014. We also welcomed Adam Pollock onto the Board. Adam has demonstrated his energy, passion and skills in his work with the Brisbane Volleyball Club and in particular, the great leadership he has shown with the development of the successful AVL Pirates program.

I congratulate the winners of our annual awards:

 Brisbane Volleyball Club - 2014 Affiliate of the Year  Lachlan Reardon – 2013/14 Referee of the Year  Richard James – 2013/14 Coach of the Year I thank our business partners Mahon Legal and ADZ Impact for their continued support.

I thank our AVL sponsors that supported our men’s and women’s programs in 2014 – Suzuki, Game Clothing, Oaks Hotels, Mikasa, Yellow Cabs, Gotzinger, Oktoberfest, and Pivotal Motion Physiotherapy.

Finally, I acknowledge the significant support we continue to receive from the Queensland Government, Volleyball Australia, Queensland Academy of Sport, and the Logan City Council.

Finance Director’s Report

Volleyball Queensland (VQ) achieved a $9649 surplus in 2014 notwithstanding unplanned expenditure comprising:

 Constitution Reform workshop  $10,000 in signage and tents  Additional bookkeeping costs to ensure a smooth transition following Jenny Burton’s retirement.

VQ events continue to perform with a very high rate of success and financial viability with record participant numbers last year in both Premier Volleyball League and Schools Cup events. Jon and the Board are continually examining ways to expand VQ’s range of competitive events, training camps and commercial operations.

Some key outcomes underlying 2014’s $9,649 surplus include:

 Total revenue up $46,497 (3.9%) to $1,252,365  Non-grant revenue up $45,037 (4.6%) to $1,019,812  All requirements met under the Queensland Government Grant in 2014

VQ’s accounts reflect a stable, well-managed organisation with a strong range of core activities. Furthermore, the accounts have now addressed all inconsistencies and timing issues that hampered the transparency of accounts in prior years and can be relied on for planning purposes.

VQ cash flow during 2014 accommodated all expenditure peaks without any concern and the executive managed this year’s challenge of the Queensland Government payment received for the first time in half- yearly intervals satisfactorily. VQ has also benefited from developing a close working relationship with The Gap SHS and its premier volleyball venue as home for many of our major events.

It is the Board’s strategy to continue growth of non-grant revenue and to target larger surpluses so that VQ has a fund for reinvestment and development of future opportunities in the sport. I would like to thank Jon and the VQ office team for their continued dedication to our organisation, and Jon individually for his discipline as a financial manager and event planner.

General Manager’s Report

This is my seventh year as General Manager and I am very pleased to report that 2014 delivered sustainable growth in our revenue, membership, and affiliation. We achieved a surplus of $9,649 on increased turnover, despite investing in our equipment and branding for the Queensland Beach Volleyball Tournament (QBVT) and Australian Volleyball League (AVL). We successfully recruited three new staff into the Volleyball Queensland (VQ) office – Susan McQuinn as our Bookkeeper, Victoria Cameron as our Events Administration Officer, and Tyler Hayes as our new Member Services Coordinator. We won our second consecutive Men’s AVL title in 2014 and retained Australian Junior Volleyball Championship’s (AJVC) President’s Cup, making it eight times in nine years since 2006. We also took silver at Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championship’s (AJBVC) and bronze in Women’s AVL. Overall, it was a very strong year across all four national championships. Premier Volleyball League (PVL) moved to Sundays and our new home at The Gap State High School and delivered record entries – 52 teams from 10 affiliated clubs. State Championships continued to grow and were supported well by our affiliates. We conducted the inaugural National Club Championships, under sanction from Volleyball Australia, at Easter 2014 to modest entries (five men’s teams only). Meanwhile, all of our weekly social leagues continued to improve their financial performance – Metro League, Spiker Sports (Beach and Indoor). The 2014 VQ Annual Awards Evening at Broncos Leagues Club attracted a record 238 guests and will be split next year into separate seasonal awards nights for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. Our Queensland Beach Volleyball Tour (QBVT) grew stronger as the series attracted more event promoters and more participants under the experienced leadership of Damien Searle. We purchased four new 3m x 3m marquees to provide better services and brand promotion. Our AVL program achieved fantastic sponsor support from Suzuki, Game Clothing, Oaks Hotels, Gotzinger, Oktoberfest, Pivotal Motion Physiotherapy, Sunshine Volleysport and The Gap State High School. We purchased ten new large courtside signs for AVL sponsors, which can be Volleyball Queensland simply could not deliver its services without the wonderful support of its corporate sponsors – Queensland Government, Mikasa, and Logan City Council. Finally, I would like to thank the VQ President, Boris Georgieff, for his continued leadership and support. Jon Gibbs General Manager

Development Development Camps Every year, VQ holds a number of development camps each aimed at different skills and ages of junior players. The camps are offered at various times of the year to complement relevant leagues and events.

Junior Pirates Camp is run in early January to introduce and develop the skills of our state’s high school volleyball players. The camp is open to juniors of all skill levels, from beginners to trained athletes, and it is a great opportunity for students to refine their techniques whilst having fun on the school holidays. In 2014, camps hit maximum capacity with 86 boys and girls attending across the four days.

Future Stars development camps are held in November with the purpose of identifying potential elite junior players and providing an opportunity for them to further their skills. Talent identification is carried out at Senior and Junior Schools Cup to find appropriate athletes. Due to excellent take up in 2013, the 2014 Future Stars camps expanded to three camps with addition of the U16 age group to join the existing U15 and U17 age groups for the coming year. Athletes in all age groups undergo a range of physiological assessments and performance benchmarking tests to establish height, weight, standing and spike reach, agility and general fitness levels, as well as participating in training drills and games. The two camps held over consecutive weekends were attended by 143girls and 157boys.

Referee Courses In 2014, VQ hosted 12 District level referee courses in not only Brisbane but Ipswich, Gold Coast and Mackay. As a direct result, over 300 new referees received accreditation at a district level. Currently in Queensland there is over 1000 qualified referees.

Coaching Courses Volleyball Queensland delivered 14 Level 1 volleyball coaching courses in 2014. These were held in Brisbane, Mackay, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Darwin. Many of these courses were facilitated in partnership with the Get Active Queensland Accreditation Program (GAQAP), which aims to provide skills and accreditations to teachers and people involved with schools and community groups. In total, these courses have produced 115 newly accredited Level 1 coaches in Queensland.

Easts Volleyball Club holds a strong presence in the League with their Secretary and Treasurer, Trevor Hunter, continuing his role as Competition Manager.

Spiker Sports Volleyball – Somerville House In 2014 the Spiker Sports Volleyball League at Somerville House consolidated the growth that was seen in the previous year. The League is run across two schools, Somerville House and Anglican Church Grammar School which it shares with Metro League. The competition manager is Sharon Williams from Dragons Volleyball Association.

Australian Volleyball League The Australian Volleyball League, the national indoor league for men and women, has developed in format over the past few years, servicing the various demands of elite men's and women's volleyball, drawn largely from club/state volleyball players.

The Queensland Pirates are shaping up as one of the strongest teams in the Australian Volleyball League. Both men’s and women’s teams have seen their share of finals volleyball, with the men going back to back in 2014.

Both teams looked very sharp thanks to new uniforms from Game Clothing and they had the skills to put on a pleasing show all season. The men had a terrific season only dropping two games before ultimately winning the Grand Final.

In the men’s final, the Queensland Pirates, made it back-to-back titles with a four-set win against Canberra Heat. The opening set was a real arm wrestle, with Queensland eventually triumphing 28-26, with Pirate Captain Andrew Maclean leading from the front. The Pirates raced out of the blocks in the second, taking the set 25-13, before Canberra took the third set 25-20. The final set went point-for-point until late, when Queensland stepped up the pressure to notch a 25-19 and three sets to one victory.

Final scores: Qld d ACT 28-26, 25-13, 20-25, 25-19.

Volleyball Queensland 2014 Annual Report | 21

In the Women’s bronze match, the Queensland Pirates defeated the SA Storm 25-21, 25-22, 25-18.

Each set started with the teams trading point-for-point until the closing stages, when the Pirates strong serving, led by Pheobe Bell, and aggressive hitting, led by Jess Croucher saw the Pirates home. Three Pirates were named in the tournament’s All Stars, with Shane Alexander also named the men’s MVP.

Volleyball Queensland, the players and staff of the team would like to thank the sponsors of the Queensland Pirates who have shown support throughout the season.
