    BEGRIFFE und THEMEN aus der Welt der GEHÖRLOSIGKEIT BEGRIFFE Akustisch: Als akustisch bezeichnet man Signale oder Informationen, die man über das Hören wahrnehmen kann. Dies können von einfachen Tönen bis zu komplexen Sprachen reichen. Lautsprachlich gesprochene Sprachen werden über das Hören aufgenommen, verarbeitet und verstanden. Gebärdensprachen hingegen sind visuell-gestische Sprachen, die noch zu den manuellen Teilen (einzelne Gebärden) noch non-manuelle Teile aufweist (Mimik, Gestik, Blickrichtung, Kopf- und Körperhaltung, …). ASL: American Sign Language –ist die dominierende Gebärdensprache in den USA und in englischsprachigen Teilen in Kanada. 1960 stellte Dr. William Stokoe von der Gallaudet University als erster Linguist fest, dass ASL alle Eigenschaften einer sprachwissenschaftlich anerkannten Sprache besitzt (-> Gebärdensprache). Sie wird auch als internationales Verständigungsmittel z.B. in akademischen Begegnungen eingesetzt. Audismus: Audismus ist ein aus zwei Begriffen zusammengesetztes Wort: Das lateinische „audire“ bedeutet „hören“. Der -ismus bezeichnet ein System von Geisteshaltung und Lebenseinstellung. Das Wort beschreibt eine Form der Diskriminierung gegenüber gehörlosen oder schwerhörigen Menschen. Ausgangspunkt des Audismus sind verinnerlichte Vorurteile und die Einstellung, dass das Leben als gehörlose oder schwerhörige Person weniger wert sei als jenes der hörenden Personen, die Folgen sind das Überlegenheitsgefühl und das Defizitdenken, nur weil sie besser hören und sprechen können.
