NICAN MOPOHUA, the original XVI Century Guadalupe’s apparitions story. NICAN MOPOHUA ("HERE IS TOLD") and set down in order how a short time ago the Perfect Virgin Holy Mary Mother of God, our Queen, miraculously appeared out at Tepeyac, widely known as Guadalupe. First she caused herself to be seen by an Indian named Juan Diego, poor but worthy of respect; and then her Precious Image appeared before the recently named Bishop, Don Fray Juan de Zumárraga. 1 Ten years after the City of Mexico was conquered, with the arrows and shields put aside, when there was peace in all the towns, 2 just as it sprouted, faith now grows green, now opens its corolla, the knowledge of the One by whom we all live: the true God. 3 At that time, the year 1531, a few days into the month of December, it happened that there was a humble but respected Indian, a poor man of the people; 4 his name was Juan Diego; he lived in Cuauhtitlán, as they say. 5 and in all the things of God, he belonged to Tlaltilolco. 6 It was Saturday, not yet dawn; he was coming in pursuit of God and his commandments. 7 And as he drew near the little hill called Tepeyac it was beginning to dawn. 8 He heard singing on the little hill, like the song of many precious birds; when their voices would stop, it was as if the hill were answering them; extremely soft and delightful, their songs exceeded the songs of the coyoltotl and the tzinitzcan and other precious birds.

8/11/2016 Crazy on them: Heart by Heart returns to the Taste By Brian Soergel Edmonds, WA EdmondsBeacon.com Crazy on them: Heart by Heart returns to the Taste Spinoff band features members from local high schools By Brian Soergel | Aug 11, 2016 What’s your favorite Heart song? “Barracuda”? “Crazy on You”? “Magic Man?” Chances are you’ll hear them all when Heart by Heart returns to A Taste of Edmonds 7 p.m. Saturday on the main stage. But bassist Steve Fossen, an original member of Heart who formed Heart by Heart, said there is one particular tune Courtesy of: Janine Harles that really gets the crowd going, and Heart by Heart performs at a previous A Taste of Edmonds. it’s not a rocker – it’s the power ballad “Alone.” “That happens to be the very first Heart song that Somar ever learned,” said Fossen, referring to lead singer Somar Macek, who graduated from Meadowdale High School. “It always gets a strong response. It often brings people to their feet.” Somar sings because, as you might have guessed, sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are not in the band. Which is not a “tribute” band, by the way. “Heart by Heart is technically a spinoff band, and has evolved into an authentic throwback and tribute to the legacy and songs of the '70s and '80s,” said Fossen who, along with bandmember and drummer Michael Derosier – who graduated from the old Woodway High School – was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Heart in 2013.

  • An Answer from the Devadatta Stories of the Pāli Jātakas
religions Article What Does It Mean To Be a Badly Behaved Animal? An Answer from the Devadatta Stories of the Pali¯ Jatakas¯ Naomi Appleton School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH1 2LX, UK; [email protected] Received: 11 April 2019; Accepted: 19 April 2019; Published: 24 April 2019 Abstract: The many animals that appear in the Pali¯ Jatakatthava¯ n. n. ana¯ often mirror human predicaments, society and language, and this has prompted largely allegorical readings of the stories. In addition, in many cases the animals are identified as past lives of important human characters, potentially diminishing their animality further. In particular, the Buddha’s repeated rebirth as a range of virtuous and wise animals tells us plenty about the Buddha, but arguably little about animals. Nonetheless, in this article I argue that the jataka¯ s are able to tell us interesting things about the capabilities of animals. By using stories of another key animal character—namely Devadatta, the Buddha’s nemesis—I explore what might be distinctive about the ability of animals to misbehave. Since Devadatta appears 28 times as an animal and 46 as a human, he allows us to probe whether or not the text’s compilers saw a difference between human and animal capacities for evil. In the process, I raise questions about how we should view animal tales in the Jataka¯ s more broadly, and highlight the productive tension between animals as unfortunate fellow travellers in the cycle of rebirth, and animals as literary devices that shed light on human behaviour. Keywords: Buddhism; jataka¯ ; Devadatta; animals; morality 1.

Maciaz A Project Report Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree MASTER OF SCIENCE (Natural Resources with an Emphasis in Environmental Education) College of Natural Resources UNIVERSITY. OF. WISCONSIN Stevens Point, Wisconsin ·July 2001 APPROVED BY THE GRADUATE COMMITTEE OF: Director, Treehaven and Associate Professor UWSP/CNR ii ABSTRACT The purpose of this project was to promote hands-on Environmental Education at the elementary level by developing an extra-curricular environmental teaching club at the junior high level. Club members gained confidence (i.e. awareness and knowledge) about environmental issues and concepts during club meetings and field trips. Water quality testing, birdhouse building, and the making of a mercury contamination map helped club members develop teaching skills. The activities at the junior high led to Madeline Hunter teaching strategies for elementary students addressing elementary science standards for the different grades. Club advisors chose to use snakes to develop the standards after choosing peer teachers from the club members. The chosen peer teachers researched, developed, and tested lesson plans on junior high classes before taking the 'BAD RAP' animal show on the road. Prior to the presentation, elementary students were surveyed to determine their attitudes towards different animals. After viewing the peer teaching presentation, they were given a post survey to establish whether their attitudes about snakes and other animals had changed. Post survey results show that the students viewed the 'BAD RAP' animals as a needed part of our environment. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS To my wife, Sarah Maciaz, thanks for not letting me forget the most important part of my life; our family.
