Obsessions, paranoia, wilful acts of self-destruction surround us constantly. Though we age we still hear the cries of those for whom the attraction to mournful chaos is monumental.” Because of this common contemporary feeling, our age can be called, what Teresa Brennan has termed “the age of paranoia” (Brennan 20). Everything we experience seems to belong to a global world of technological information that gives us access to instantaneous “contact”, giving also the feeling that we live in a reality that does not exist, or only exists in our minds as a kind of imaginary construct, leading to what Freud called a fixation in a narcissistic state of being.

    “God, what frightful, ancient terrors there are on this continent fools call ‘young’!” America has a Gothic tradition all its own, far removed from the vaulting cathedral arches, crumbling castles and shuttered-turreted manor houses of European Gothic. A rural Gothic; a Gothic of the plains and wheatfields, of the hills and backwoods; a Gothic that concerns itself less with degenerate aristocracy than with equally degenerate plain folks. A gothic immortalised by Grant Wood in his oft-referenced, oft-parodied 1930 painting: AMERICAN GOTHIC. It is evident in the weird, wry fantasies of Charles Finney and the shambling, darkness-dwelling horrors of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, it defines the dark carnival of Ray Bradbury’s smalltown Illinois and casts its shadow over Stephen King’s Castle Rock, Maine. It is evident, too, in the God-cursed, spiritually-hungry backwoods antiheroes of Flannery O’Connor, the florid dialogue, lurid melodramatics, and sudden brutal emotional and physical violence of Tennessee Williams, the ornately-cadenced, psychologically troubled stream of consciousness of William Faulkner, the spiritually isolated freaks and misfits of Carson McCullers, the deadpan grotesquery of Harry Crews, the stark savagery of Cormac McCarthy. In in some respects, it could be argued, there are two broad traditions of American Gothic. There is a popular tradition, more concerned with the fantastic, the strange, and the supernatural, spawned in the pulps and continued and developed by genre writers, and there is a more literary tradition, particularly in the South, more concerned with the psychological, the sexual, and the spiritual. Of course, sometimes it is difficult to differentiate, because both concern themselves equally with the freakish, the grotesque, the macabre, both focus on extremes of emotion and experience.

    The 15th International Gothic Association Conference Lewis University, Romeoville, Illinois July 30 - August 2, 2019 Speakers, Abstracts, and Biographies A NICOLE ACETO “Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut”: The Terror of Domestic Femininity in Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House Abstract From the beginning of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, ordinary domestic spaces are inextricably tied with insanity. In describing the setting for her haunted house novel, she makes the audience aware that every part of the house conforms to the ideal of the conservative American home: walls are described as upright, and “doors [are] sensibly shut” (my emphasis). This opening paragraph ensures that the audience visualizes a house much like their own, despite the description of the house as “not sane.” The equation of the story with conventional American families is extended through Jackson’s main character of Eleanor, the obedient daughter, and main antagonist Hugh Crain, the tyrannical patriarch who guards the house and the movement of the heroine within its walls, much like traditional British gothic novels. Using Freud’s theory of the uncanny to explain Eleanor’s relationship with Hill House, as well as Anne Radcliffe’s conception of terror as a stimulating emotion, I will explore the ways in which Eleanor is both drawn to and repelled by Hill House, and, by extension, confinement within traditional domestic roles. This combination of emotions makes her the perfect victim of Hugh Crain’s prisonlike home, eventually entrapping her within its walls. I argue that Jackson is commenting on the restriction of women within domestic roles, and the insanity that ensues when women accept this restriction.

    The Literature of Madness: A Critical Study of the Madhouse in Gothic Literature Benjamin E. Noad Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy School of Arts and Humanities Division of Literature and Languages University of Stirling July 2018 1 ABSTRACT This thesis is a critical study of British and American Gothic prose representations of madness and the madhouse. This focuses on historical changes in asylum practice from the mid-nineteenth to the early twenty-first century, specifically from 1846 to 2014. While Gothic scholarship generally regards madness as being identifiable within most works of the genre, few studies have attempted to explain why it is that the Gothic’s fascination with madness has endured beyond its literary origins in the late eighteenth century. Surprisingly, no full-length critical study has yet historically documented the Gothic mode’s longstanding preoccupation with the madhouse, especially given how numerous these encounters in Gothic fictions are. For this reason, the present study turns its attention exclusively towards the institutional figure of the madhouse: a territory where madness has already been labelled into existence. The object of this thesis is to demonstrate how the Gothic text is haunted by notions of madness, and how in turn, the madhouse is haunted by discourses of the Gothic. This reading – informed by hauntology – of the Gothic madhouse space argues that by ‘gothicising’ the medical institution, Gothic fictions appeal to a memory of what has come before and anticipates a future for madness in Western culture. For this reason, Gothic encounters with the madhouse (where madness is simultaneously present and absent) are knowingly engaged with critiquing, politicising, rejecting, or even ignoring, the historical discourses on madness with which they are contemporary.

    English 159—American Gothic Fiction, Summer 2021 Professor Niles Tomlinson Email:[email protected] Day/Time: 1:00-3:00 MTWR Office hrs: 3:00-4:00 M & W and by appt In this course we will explore the haunted houses and woods of the American imagination. Through our study of mid-19th-Century American Gothic writers, we will engage the persistent question of why a country that values clarity, freedom, religious purity, inclusion, and progress, produces literature so often characterized by darkness, claustrophobia, madness, monstrosity, and haunting. Specifically, we will look at dialogues between the American dream and madness, between “normal” communities and maniacal individuals, between “The City on the Hill” and the “wilderness” beneath. Then, as we move into the late 19th Century and 20th Century, we will consider what these novels and short stories reveal about alternative narratives (especially narratives of otherness) that confront the dominant story of a “self-evident” culture. Among many questions we will address: What is the relationship between the distinctly interior notion of America as an idea (a dream) and the psychological nightmares expressed in many of these texts? What are the distinct forms of dominant culture paranoia that issue from nature spaces and urban spaces? Why might the American South be a repository for the Gothic and the grotesque?     ENGL 159—American Gothic Fiction Professor Niles Tomlinson Email: [email protected] Room: Maguire 101 Office: New North 335 Day/Time: 10:45-12:45 MTWR Phone: 7-7435 Office hrs: 1:00-2:00 M & W In this course we will explore the haunted houses and woods of the American imagination. th Through our study of mid-19 -Century​ American Gothic writers, we will engage the ​ persistent question of why a country that values clarity, freedom, religious purity, inclusion, and progress, produces literature so often characterized by darkness, claustrophobia, madness, monstrosity, and haunting. Specifically, we will look at dialogues between the American dream and madness, between “normal” communities and maniacal individuals, between “The City on the Hill” and the “wilderness” beneath. Then, as we move into the late th th 19 ​ Century and 20 ​ Century, we will consider what these novels and short stories reveal ​ ​ about alternative narratives (especially narratives of otherness) that confront the dominant story of a “self-evident” culture. Among many questions we will address: What is the relationship between the distinctly interior notion of America as an idea (a dream) and the psychological nightmares expressed in many of these texts? What are the distinct forms of dominant culture paranoia that issue from nature spaces and urban spaces? Why might the American South be a repository for the Gothic and the grotesque? Unlike the urban neighborhood, the suburban home or the rural farm were founded on their separation from both the world of work and from the world of others. Removed from the hustle and bustle of the urban neighborhood, the suburban and rural homes became a private island that turned increasingly inward. The following essay presents the examples of American productions that center upon the violation of home sanctuary, in which the suburban or rural house becomes radically unhomelike. It points to some instances in which such dwellings also form their abundant secluded spaces, nurture psychopathic carryover, projecting a “lived in” character in the most distressing sense. Locura, depravación y género en las topografías domésticas RESUMEN Aunque el hogar ha sido siempre un concepto importante en la cultura americana, el hogar suburbano fue único. A diferencia del vecindario urbano, el hogar suburbano o la granja rural se basaban en la separación, tanto del mundo del trabajo, como del mundo de los otros. Apartados del bullicio del vecindario urbano, los hogares suburbanos y rurales se convirtieron en un mundo aparte, privado, de mayor introspección. El presente ensayo ofrece ejemplos de producciones americanas, centradas en la violación del hogar como santuario, donde la casa rural o suburbana se convierte en justo todo lo contrario a lo que representa un hogar.
