Overseas Expert Column by Naohiro Goda This race is over the same course and distance as the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas), first leg of Japanese Triple Tiara on 11th April. Outer turf is used for 1,600m races. There is long straight from the start to first turn, and wide draw is not a big disadvantage. And final straight is 473m long, and this is a very straight forward course. My first choice is JUN BLUE SKY. The 3YO colt by DURAMENTE finished second in the Listed Hagi Stakes and third in G3 Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes. Although he was beaten third in the allowance race for one time winners at Nakayama last time out, he stumbled at the start and could not run his race at all. He still managed to finish third, covering the final 600m for 34.9 seconds. I have a feeling that it is easy for this colt to graduate from this class. And 1,600m turf course at Hanshin is a suitable track for him. RAISON DU SOURIRE is out of ROBE TISSAGE, winner of the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies over the same course and distance as this race. Although the colt by HEART’S CRY is still green and was not settled well in running last time out, he was still able to finish fourth. I believe this race’s tempo should be strong enough and RAISON DU SOURIRE should be able to run in good rhythm here. RAISON DU SOURIRE is my second choice. SPIRAL NOVA had run the races beyond 1,800m for six starts since his debut last summer and tried to run the race over 1,600m for the first time on 20th March at Nakayama. The colt by KIZUNA performed well there and finished second, beaten nose by the winner. He was settled well, tracking leaders, and finished strongly. I am sure 1,600m is a suitable trip for him. As he reproduces that form again on Sunday, I am sure he should finish within the first three. DERMA YAKUSHI is a half-brother to HAKUSAN MOON, winner of three Graded Stakes and earner of over 370 million yen. While he has temperament issue, as many of ORFEVRE’s crop has, his physical looks very gorgeous and has quality to become a Graded Stakes performer. In fact, he won the maiden by four lengths last October, which is still unforgettable. DERMA YAKUSHI is my fourth choice. VIP LANVIN has been improving race by race and finished second in the allowance race for one time winners over the same course and distance as this race on 13th March. He can adapt with any pace, as he tracks leaders when the pace is not strong, while he waits at mid-division when the pace is strong. VIP LANVIN is my fifth choice. SELECTIONS: 3. JUN BLUE SKY, 12. RAISON DU SOURIRE, 6. SPIRAL NOVA, 16. DERMA YAKUSHI & 9. VIP LANVIN -9- HK Time 11:25 A.M. • THE 70TH HANSHIN JUVENILE FILLIES (G1) Races for Two-Year-Olds Were Held for the First Time in 1946 at Tokyo
FROM: Masahiro Usuda General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: December 9, 2018 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 70TH HANSHIN JUVENILE FILLIES (G1) Races for two-year-olds were held for the first time in 1946 at Tokyo. As the number of contenders increased, championship races that determine the top two-year-olds of the season—the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes (predecessor to the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes) and the Hanshin Sansai Stakes (predecessor to the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies)—were established in eastern and western Japan, respectively, in 1949. The two races were designated G1 status in conjunction with the new grading system implemented in 1984. In 1991, the two races were divided by gender into two separate G1 events; the Hanshin Sansai Himba Stakes for two-year-old fillies and the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings, then renamed “Hanshin Juvenile Fillies” and “Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes”, respectively, in 2001. The Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, which initially started as a 1,200-meter sprint race, was extended to 1,400 meters in 1960 and to 1,600 meters in 1962. In 2010, the race was opened to foreign runners. Recent winners of the race include many successful G1 champions such as 2006 winner and 2008 & 2009 Horse of the Year Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet) who is the current race record holder at 1:33.1 over the mile distance; 2008 champion and 2010 Horse of the Year Buena Vista (JPN, by Special Week); and 2009 champion Apapane (JPN, by King Kamehameha) who subsequently won the Triple Crown titles for three-year-old fillies—the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas, G1, 1,600m), the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, G1, 2,400m) and the Shuka Sho (G1, 2,000m)—in 2010.

THE RULE Rombauer, trained by Michael McCarthy, was clocked in :50.01 (53/86) beneath John Velazquez over the fast main track. "I was very happy with the work," McCarthy said. "I just wanted him to go ahead and get familiar with Johnny. It seemed like he was well in hand at all times. Johnny asked him to gallop out a little bit going underneath the wire and the horse seemed to respond nicely. I'm very happy with what I saw today." Click or tap here to go Laoban | Sarah Andrew straight to TDN Europe. by Chris McGrath The shocking loss this week of the young gun Laoban, preceded just days earlier by that of the venerable Malibu Moon, could not fail to renew the kind of questions we should all keep asking themselves about how a stallion can make an enduring reputation. Both had started out in a regional program, having shown only marginal eligibility for a stud career on the racetrack, before quickly earning migration to Kentucky. If that was just about all they had in common, then their different roles on two of the biggest commercial rosters will have made the exit of both deeply grievous for their respective farms.

  • THE 68TH HANSHIN JUVENILE FILLIES (G1) Races for Two-Year-Olds Were Held for the First Time in 1946 at Tokyo
FROM: Yoshiyasu Honda General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: December 11, 2016 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 68TH HANSHIN JUVENILE FILLIES (G1) Races for two-year-olds were held for the first time in 1946 at Tokyo. As the number of contenders increased, championship races—the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes (predecessor to the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes) and the Hanshin Sansai Stakes (predecessor to the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies)—which determined the top two-year-olds of the season in eastern and western Japan, respectively, were established in 1949. In conjunction with the new grading system implemented, the two races were designated G1 status in 1984. The race, which started off initially as a 1,200-meter sprint, was extended to 1,400 meters in 1960 and to 1,600 meters in 1962. In 2010, the race was opened to foreign runners. Recent winners of the race include many successful G1 champions such as two-time Horse of the Year Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet) who won seven G1 titles; Buena Vista (JPN, by Special Week), also Horse of the Year of 2010 and subsequent winner of six G1 races; and 2009 champion Apapane (JPN, by King Kamehameha) who subsequently won the Triple Crown titles for three-year-old fillies—the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas, G1, 1,600m), the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, G1, 2,400m) and the Shuka Sho (G1, 2,000m)—in 2010.
