The Inverted Backhand THE INVERTED BACKHAND 1. Preparation - The player approaches the ball on a 45- degree line. As the player takes their racquet back in their backswing, unlike the Traditional backhand with an eastern grip, where they will have to change their grip from the forehand position, they will not switch their grip from the semi-western forehand grip to the eastern backhand grip. They will keep the semi-western grip in place. The semi-western grip is found by placing their base- knuckle on their index finger on the grips #4 (3 ½) bevel to establish the proper grip. By doing this, the ball will be struck on the same side of the racquet face as the topspin forehand. From there the racquet will continue back with the racquet head below the dominant hand. This is assisted by the bend of the elbow of the playing arm being put into a 90- degree angle, with the elbow itself being at nose-level. Once the backswing is complete, the first move for the racquet will be forward and up, as it moves toward the contact point. 2. Contact - The fully- extended arm should begin to move up and forward to meet the ball. The arm will unfold, or straighten, as the racquet face gets closer to the ball. At the moment of contact, the arm should be nearly completely extended and the racquet face should be at almost a vertical position. The more vertical the swing path, the more topspin that will be produced. The acceleration and steepness from the backswing to the contact point on the ball is critical when producing power and revolutions on the ball. 3. Finish - After contact, the playing arm will continue to move forward and up, possibly opening the front shoulder up to the court. The racquet will have started on the non-dominant side and will end on the dominant side above the point of contact. Depending upon the force of the swing, the player may use either an inside (turn-in or possible cross-handed turn) or outside turn (turn-out). This will be determined by whichever turn is the shortest to recover to the Hub. © 2019 USTA. All Rights Reserved..

Trajectory data for two grips (eastern & continental) and depths (deep & short) were captured for sixteen sub-elite right-handed tennis players using a 12-camera Vicon motion capture system (250 Hz). The eastern grip demonstrated significantly faster horizontal racket head velocities compared to the continental grip. However, no differences were observed in accuracy or spin rate between grips (p > 0.05). In the non-dominant upper limb for the continental condition, elbow flexion was smaller while wrist extension was larger throughout the swing. Collectively, these data suggest that the continental grip may place the wrist in a position that is more vulnerable to overuse injury. KEYWORDS: ulna, wrist, kinematics, grip, tennis.     SETTLING DISPUTES Disagreements between players on line calling and scoring are common within competitive tennis. When disputes occur within official competitions it’s important that they are handled in a fair, consistent and efficient manner. The following steps detail how to settle disputes. LINE CALLS This involves a player making a subjective decision which ultimately could have a big effect on the outcome of the match. This a hot issue particularly for Juniors who for many reasons, often do not accurately see the ball in relation to lines. Witnessed Line Calls If an referee or court supervisor witnesses a blatantly incorrect call, they can go on-court and tell the player that the incorrect call, was an unintentional hindrance to his/her opponent and the point will be replayed, unless it was a point-ending shot and therefore the point will be awarded to the opponent. In the case of matches played on a clay court, the point is awarded to the opponent regardless of whether it is a point-ending shot or not. Unwitnessed Line Call Dispute (non-clay courts): • Ask the player whose call it was, if they are sure of their call. o If yes, the call stands. o If no, then the point should be replayed. • If you think it would be beneficial to have the match supervised (and this is possible), have the Supervisor stay on the court for the remainder of the match. Advise players that he/she will correct any clearly incorrect calls. • If it is not possible to allocate an adult to supervise the match, you should watch the next few points from off the court and then keep a discreet but watchful eye on the rest of the match.

The 2008 WTT regular season runs July 3-23 with the WTT Championship Weekend set for July 24-27 in Roseville, Calif. World TeamTennis, co-founded in 1974 by tennis legend Billie Jean King, features several generations of tennis pros competing in a co-ed pro league in communities throughout the U.S. each summer. This is the first Washington, D.C.-based team in the League’s 33-year history. “Washington D.C. is a world-class sports market that will be a showcase for World TeamTennis,” said WTT CEO/Commissioner Ilana Kloss. “We’ve looked at this market for several years as a great location for expansion.
