Each day these facilities care for animals and collaborate to save species from extinction, but necessary COVID- 19 operating restrictions have put them and their crucial work in jeopardy. Zoos and aquariums are uniquely vulnerable because, unlike many other business entities, they must provide ongoing care for hundreds of thousands of animals. The animals cannot be furloughed. Therefore, our members must continue to pay the high fixed costs of animal care with little to no opportunity to earn revenue while absorbing monthly operating losses that in some cases run into the millions of dollars. As this crisis extends, some zoos and aquariums are facing the prospect of permanent closure. All of our member facilities have incredibly difficult choices ahead of them. We need Congress’s immediate help. As mission driven organizations, the majority of our zoos and aquariums continue to shoulder the costs of caring for, rescuing, breeding, and relocating endangered or threatened species, many of which are the responsibility of or owned by the federal government.

    2017 Annual Report on Conservation and Science INTRODUCTION 2 2017 Annual Report on Conservation and Science The Association of Zoos and Aquariums and its member facilities envision a world where, as a result of their work, all people respect, value and conserve wildlife and wild places. The 2017 Annual Report on Conservation and Science (ARCS) celebrates the conservation efforts, education programs, green (sustainable) business practices, and research projects of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums and certified related facilities. Content in ARCS reflects submissions made to annual surveys conducted by AZA. Each survey topic has been carefully defined to maximize consistency of reporting throughout the AZA community. AZA’s Field Conservation Committee and Research and Technology Committee review all of the relevant submissions by members to promote even greater consistency. Field conservation focuses on efforts having a direct impact on animals and habitats in the wild. Education programming includes those with specific goals and delivery methods, defined content and a clear primary discipline and target audience. Mission-focused research projects involve application of the scientific method, are hypothesis (or question)-driven, involve systematic data collection and analysis of those data and draw conclusions from the research process. Green business practices focus on the annual documentation and usage of key resources: energy, fuel for transportation, waste and water – as well as identification of specific green practices being implemented. AZA is grateful to each member that responded to these surveys.
