One Indonesian Player Sharing the Lead with a Perfect Score of Two Points at the 3Rd Indonesian Open Chess Championship Kristianus Liem One Indonesian player sharing the lead with a perfect score of two points at the 3rd Indonesian Open Chess Championship is FM Anjas Novitas (2328). Anjas has done this is the best possible way, with back to back wins against Grandmasters. His first victory came against GM Mark Paragua (2571) from the Philippines and the second against GM Dao Tien Hai (2500) from Vietnam. 3rd Indonesia Open Chess Championship 2013 Inside This Issue: Cover 1 Behind these bulletin : Inside This Issue 2 Kristianus Liem Peter Long Today’s Review 2 Stefani Dian Cheri Virda Rizka Aulia Tournament Schedule 3 Taufik Halay Nadya Anggraini Results Round 2 4 Evie Lindiawati Interview with Player : Tuvshintugs Batchimeg 5 Pictures Gallery 8 Games 10 Today’s Review ROUND TWO REPORT After two rounds of play, no less than sixteen players share the lead at the Indonesia Open Chess Championship (IOCC) 2013 with a perfect two from two. Of the top seeds, GMs Alexander Moiseenko and Aleksey Dreev look to be in good form with easy wins over the Vietnamese duo of GM Cao Sang and Nguyen Van Huy respectively, but GMs Surya Sekhar Ganguly and Ivan Ivanisevic are also playing well and together with somewhat less fancied Igarza Renier Vazquez, Avetik Grigoryan, Jan Ehlvest, Suri Vaibhav, Vadim Malakhatko, and Gundavaa Bayarsaikhan are also comfortably getting the job done. The top two women in GMs Antoaneta Stefanova and Hoang Thanh Trang are also among the leaders while of the locals, FM Anjas Novitas continues to impress, this time taking down GM Dao Thien Hai in a nice game. GM Nigel Short was fortunate to win against IM Rolando Nolte who pressed hard from the beginning and then in a drawn position chose to be passive and this game, bit by bit, the second seed increased chances to try for the full point and this was duly achieved in the last game to finish. A large group are also on 1.5/2 and while GMs Oliver Barbosa, Salem A R Saleh, Sandro Mareco and Ehsan Ghaem Maghami would be happy to have recovered somewhat with Issue 3 Page 2 3rd Indonesia Open Chess Championship 2013 wins, GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son continues to lose ground with a second successive draw. WGMs Tuvshintugs Batchimeg and Maria Manakova on the other hand would be pleased to be only half a point behind a leaders with draws against GM Rustam Khusnutdinov and IM Ronny Gunawan respectively. Other notable results include the young Anton Smirnov holding veteran GM Eugene Torre, once again in a game with repetition of moves! Torre must be thinking how for the second game in a row how he could make such a slip in the final stages after doing all the hard work! Two seriously veteran Indonesian GMs in Herman Suradiraja and Herman Ardiansyah were for a long time the centre of attention and while it was heartbreak for the frail and ailing Suradiraja who collapsed in a winning endgame against WGM Dinara Sadakassova, while WIM Chelsie Monica Sihite made the mistake of leaning back after winning the exchange against Ardiansyah who then turned back the years with a vintage attacking performance to force her resignation. It will be hard day in the office tomorrow in Rounds 3 and 4 as it will be the first of three double round days. rd More about 3 Indonesia Open Chess Championship 2013 The official website : http://indonesiaopen.chessdom.com/ Results : http://chess-results.com/tnr113218.aspx?lan=1 Live games : http://indonesiaopen.chessdom.com/2013/indonesia-open-2013-live/ Issue 3 Page 3 3rd Indonesia Open Chess Championship 2013 Results Round 2 Bo. One of their best woman players is WGM Tuvshintugs Batchimeg 2376 and she is also here in Jakarta. Batchimeg, who played in the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2012-2014 has started IOCC with a win in the first round. While it is likely that IOCC 2013 will be her last tournament this year, the young lady who also loves dance has a long term plan to fully realise her potential and shared her aspirations with us. INTERVIEW Bulletin Team : When did you first become acquainted with chess? Batchimeg : I was taught to play chess by my father when I was 6 years old. My family has a unique engagement with the game as we have always been close to it! Everyone in my family plays chess. My father who is also my mentor and inspiration is an International Master and so we study chess and then follow tournaments together. Chess is like the history of our family! Also in Mongolia many people play chess, starting in the 70's and 80's when it became widely popular. Bulletin Team : So how is chess now in your country? Batchimeg : From young, children are taught chess in my country. Today Mongolia has 4 GMs and 2 WGMs. Now we want to promote the game even more but need the support of the government like it is happening in Indonesia. I happy and impressed to see the development of chess here going so well with great leadership and excellent organisation and for sure chess In Indonesia can only keep increasing its popularity. I can confidently say this because I have played with Indonesian players before and they have become strong players.

Long Road to Sheffield The photographs included in the Sheffield article and of Amy Hoare are by Brendan O’Gorman - thanks, Brendan. You can see more of Brendan’s work here - https://picasaweb.google.com/105059642136123716017 by the ECF’s own Andrew Farthing ... For me, the 2011 British Championships started with a bang. Or more pre- cisely, a rather loud clunk. Sunday, 24th July, 6.32 p.m. The Worcestershire Open Congress – a tournament so wonderful that only an event as grand and important as the British Championships dare follow it – was over for another year. Everything seemed to have gone smoothly and I had helped my fellow organisers clear up and was in my car leaving the University of Worcester campus. Crossing a speed bump at what I thought was a suitably sedate pace, I heard the said clunk and saw in my rear view mirror the sorry- looking remains of my antique Astra’s exhaust. Backing up to collect the debris, I was passed by a taxi, the driver of which completed my humiliation with a cheery, “Is that yours, mate?” (continued on Page 6) Members of the Governance Committee ECF News Richard Haddrell and Andrew Leadbetter CANDIDATES for ELECTION (nominated by the Chairman of the Governance Committee) at the ECF AGM on 15th October 2011 * denotes an incumbent director, FIDE Delegate or President Chairman of a Standing Committee seeking re-election to CJ de Mooi* the same post.
