Founded by Dave Gavitt in 1979, the BIG EAST reorganized in 2013, entering a new era by returning to its basketball-focused heritage. The annual Gavitt Tipoff Games, pitting the BIG EAST vs. the Big Ten each November, honors Gavitt. The BIG EAST Conference has earned 22 NCAA Tournament berths in its four years in the current 10- team configuration, including seven in 2017, five in 2016, six in 2015 and four in 2014. Nine of the 10 schools in the BIG EAST have earned NCAA berths in the past four seasons: Xavier (4), Villanova (4), Providence (4), Butler (3), Seton Hall (2), Creighton (2), Georgetown (1), St. John’s (1) and Marquette (1). Overall, the conference crowns champions in 22 sports with its student-athletes continuing to achieve success in the classroom as well as the athletic arena. In 2012, the seven BIG EAST schools that do not compete in FBS football decided to return to the type of conference alignment that existed when the league was formed in 1979 and quickly surged to national prominence as a college basketball force. On December 15, 2012, these seven institutions (DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova) an- nounced their intention to separate from the football-playing schools in the previous BIG EAST and form an independent association and in March, 2013, the seven schools reached an agreement that enabled them to keep the BIG EAST name and establish a new conference entity beginning on July 1, 2013. The schools also assumed the old conference’s long-term agreement with Madison Square Garden to host the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Championship. The schools also announced the addition of three distinguished institutions -- Butler, Creighton and Xavier -- and forged a land- mark, long-term broadcast partnership with FOX Sports. BIG EAST institutions are now located in seven of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, includ- ing New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. The BIG EAST has moved its headquarters from Providence, its original location, to New York City. 98 SIX SWEET 16s IN LAST 10 YEARS • @XAVIERMBB BIG EAST CONFERENCE - 7 NCAA TOURNAMENT TEAMS IN 2017 2017 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP 2017 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP March 8-11 in Madison Square Garden All-Tournament Team Championship Dave Gavitt Trophy Villanova 74, Creighton 60 (Most Outstanding Player) Josh Hart, Villanova Semifinals Villanova 55, Seton Hall 53 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team Creighton 75, Xavier 72 Jalen Brunson, Villanova Kris Jenkins, Villanova Quarterfinals Marcus Foster, Creighton Villanova 108, St. John’s 67 Angel Delgado, Seton Hall Seton Hall 82, Marquette 76 Trevon Bluiett, Xavier Xavier 62, Butler 57 Creighton 70, Providence 58 First Round St. John’s 74, Georgetown 73 Xavier 75, DePaul 64 2016-17 BIG EAST STANDINGS Team (Postseason) BIG EAST Games Home Away All Games *Villanova (NCAA) 15-3 .833 8-1 7-2 32-4 .889 Butler (NCAA) 12-6 .667 6-3 6-3 25-9 .735 Providence (NCAA) 10-8 .556 6-3 4-5 20-13 .606 Marquette (NCAA) 10-8 .556 7-2 3-6 19-13 .594 Seton Hall (NCAA) 10-8 .556 7-2 3-6 21-12 .636 Creighton (NCAA) 10-8 .556 5-4 5-4 25-10 .714 Xavier (NCAA) 9-9 .500 5-4 4-5 24-14 .632 St. John’s 7-11 .389 5-4 2-7 14-19 .424 Georgetown 5-13 .278 3-6 2-7 14-18 .438 DePaul 2-16 .111 1-8 1-8 9-23 .281 *Won BIG EAST Championship Player of the Year: Josh Hart (Villanova) Freshman of the Year: Justin Patton (Creighton) Defensive Players of the Year: Khyri Thomas (Creighton), Mikal Bridges (Villanova), and Josh Hart (Villanova) Coach of the Year: Chris Holtmann (Butler) Xavier Honorees: Trevon Bluiett (All-BIG EAST First Team) Trevon Bluiett was a BIG EAST Conference First Team selection and a BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament Team selection as a sophomore and a junior. 11 OF LAST 12 NCAA TOURNAMENTS • GOXAVIER.COM 99 BIG EAST CONFERENCE - 7 NCAA TOURNAMENT TEAMS IN 2017 2016 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP 2016 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP March 9-12 in Madison Square Garden All-Tournament Team Championship Dave Gavitt Trophy Seton Hall 69, Villanova 67 (Most Outstanding Player) Isaiah Whitehead, Seton Hall Semifinals Villanova 76, Providence 68 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team Seton Hall 87, Xavier 83 Khadeen Carrington, Seton Hall Ismael Sanogo, Seton Hall Quarterfinals Josh Hart, Villanova Villanova 81, Georgetown 67 Kris Jenkins, Villanova Providence 74, Butler 60 Trevon Bluiett, Xavier Xavier 90, Marquette 72 Seton Hall 81, Creighton 73 First Round Georgetown 70, DePaul 53 Marquette 101, St. John’s 93 2015-16 BIG EAST STANDINGS Team (Postseason) BIG EAST Games Home Away All Games Villanova (NCAA) 16-2 .889 8-1 8-1 35-5 .875 Xavier (NCAA) 14-4 .778 8-1 6-3 28-6 .824 *Seton Hall (NCAA) 12-6 .667 6-3 6-3 25-9 .735 Providence (NCAA) 10-8 .556 5-4 5-4 24-11 .686 Butler (NCAA) 10-8 .556 6-3 4-5 22-11 .667 Creighton (NIT) 9-9 .500 5-4 4-5 20-15 .571 Marquette 8-10 .444 4-5 4-5 20-13 .606 Georgetown 7-11 .389 4-5 3-6 15-18 .455 DePaul 3-15 .167 2-7 1-8 9-22 .290 St. John’s 1-17 .056 1-8 0-9 8-24 .250 * Won BIG EAST Championship Player of the Year: Kris Dunn (Providence) Freshman of the Year: Henry Ellenson (Marquette) Defensive Player of the Year: Kris Dunn (Providence) Coaches of the Year: Kevin Willard (Seton Hall), Jay Wright (Villanova) Xavier Honorees: Trevon Bluiett (All-BIG EAST First Team) Edmond Sumner (BIG EAST All-Freshman Team) J.P.
