Dave "Lefty" Ervin begins his third year as head coach of the LaSalle team after leading the Explorers to winning seasons in each of his first two campaigns. Ervin's career record stands at a fine 36-22, a record that includes several big upsets. In his first season, Ervin engineered a 62-60 win against Notre Dame, the first time LaSaNe has beaten the Irish, and last season the Explorers surprised local rivals Villanova and St. Joseph's, both teams that reached the NCAA tournament.

The 36-year-old Ervin is the fifteenth head coach in the history of intercollegiate basket- ball at LaSalle. He was appointed head coach on August 30, 1979, succeeding Paul West- head, now head coach of the of the National Basketball Association. A 1968 graduate of LaSalle, Ervin served as an assistant coach at his alma mater under Tom Gola (1969-1970) and Westhead (1971-1977). During his tenure as an assistant, the Explorers posted a 146-93 record and reached the 20-win plateau three times, includ- ing the 1969 team which finished with a 23-1 record.

After the 1977 season, Ervin left LaSalle College and accepted the head coaching posi- tion at LaSalle High School, where he also taught psychology. In only two seasons, he directed a team which consisted of three start- ing sophomores to a playoff appearance in the highly competitive Philadelphia Catholic League. Ervin was a fine two-sport athlete during his collegiate days at LaSalle. In his senior year he captained both the Explorer basketball and baseball teams. He set a school record for most appearances by a pitcher with 12, a record that still stands. Ervin concluded his basketball ca- reer at LaSalle with 756 points, including a career high 31 points against Syracuse in his sophomore year. He was honored in his senior year with the Joseph Schmitz Jr. Award as the senior who best exemplifies the high traditions of LaSalle College in loyalty, sportsmanship and courage. Ervin, who is a prominent lecturer at dozens of basketball camps during the off-season, resides in King of Prussia, PA with his wife Dee. son Matt and daughter Erica. A native of Cliffside Park, NJ, Arribi earned his bachelor's degree in social studies at Gan- non and his master's degree in educational psychology from Edinboro State College in 1977. Before accepting the position at LaSalle, Ar- ribi was an assistant coach at Gannon. Marcel and his wife Jeanie Holt-Arribi, reside in North Hills, PA. Joe Mihalich, a 1978 graduate of LaSalle and co-captain of the Explorer basketball team his senior year, is the newest addition to the LaSalle coaching staff. Mihalich had been assistant basketball coach at DeMatha High School, a perennial power in the Washington, DC area since his graduation from LaSalle. As head coach of DeMatha's JV team, Mihalich posted a 39-5 record in his three years. Last season, subbing for head coach Morgan Wootten who was ill, Mihalich directed DeMatha's varsity squad to the DC City Title Championship against un- beaten and second ranked Dunbar High before 15,000 fans in Maryland's Cole Field House.

about my chances of making the team. It was

more convenient to stay at home and I checked

out the school and liked its academic stan- dards." LEFTY'S LINE

"Ralph is a rare find. He is a walk-on with blue

chip talent. He has all the tools to play very well on this level. What accompanies him best is a great attitude."

of my biggest weaknesses but with coaching, it is becoming one of the strong points of my game." WHY LASALLE? "Everyone who knows and plays basketball
