SAN DIEGO SECTION NEWESLETTER STAR BULLETIN AUG 2019 Pg 3 THE PATIO RACES ARE IN THE HISTORY BOOK S. Ross What a day of racing and fortunately, there were no crashes or injuries. There were some spin-outs, however. Our Track Steward, Pete Lobner ran a fair and safe race. There were six qualifying races, and the winners competed for the championship. As might be expected, the races were close, and the excitement was high. The spectators and drivers had food catered by the Birds of a Feather Enterprises. An assortment of beverages was brought in by the attendees, so no one was thirsty. The setting for the races could not have been more scenic as it was overlooking the city of San Diego, the bay and the North Island Naval Air Station. The track conditions were excellent and resulted in some record times. There is a strong possibility that these races will be run next year so If you missed out, there might be a chance next year. Slots fill up fast so do not procrastinate. Qualifying race number one drivers ready to go, from left to right, new member, Mr. Mike Tellez, Ms. Catherine Ockunzzi, Ms. Eda Adelman, Mr. David Comber, Mr. Bob Gunthorp, and Ms. Jeanette Hay (like Jackie Stewart), a native of Scotland. The winners: Catherine in center, second on Catherine's right, Bob and third Eda on Catherine's left. This race was close all the way but the Gullwing was just too fast Race number two approaching the checkered flag with Carol Ross in the lead, she went on to win the race. Eda came in second and Ann was third. David seen here in fourth with wine while racing was permitted. Eda and Carol were in a dead heat until the last roll of the dice. Carol's W196 Silver Arrow was just too fast. Note: A Silver Arrow Number 18 was driven by Juan Fangio to victory in the Italian Grand Prix in 1955. Qualifying race number three racers ready to go - on the left Brian Kruse, guest Diann Clarke, Victoria Mazelli, Diana Kruse, Gary Jarvis, and Mary Baumgartner Pg 4 AUG 2019 STAR BULLETIN SAN DIEGO SECTION NEWSLETTER Diann, winner of race number three with Gary second and Victoria third. Diann was racing a W154 Silver Arrow. Note: A W-154 number 16 driven by British driver Richard Seaman won the Nurburgring Grand prix in 1938. Mercedes-Benz won the first five positions with Auto Union trailing along with Italian cars. Race number four entries from left Jeanette, Del, David, Ron, Richard and Bob. Lydia is holding her $2.0 for something and Diana has money, drink and cell phone. Track steward was not very alert. Race number six constants are ready, from left Deb Haugen, Brian, Ann, Bob, Jen and Diana. I am sure you have noted that some entered just about every race. That is ironic since the Grand Champion entered just one qualifying race. The winner of qualifying race number six Jen Lobner, second Brian Kruse and number three Ann Kinner. The silver Arrow's winning streak seems to have come to an end. The six qualifying races completed the run for the grand champion is now ready to go. The day before yesterday 166 Notes 175 Images 191 Introduction and acknowledgements POLITICS AND SPORT are by definition incompatible, and they're combustible when mixed. The 1930s proved that: the Winter Olympics in Germany in 1936, when the President of the International Olympic Committee threatened to cancel the Games unless the anti-semitic posters were all taken down now, whatever Adolf Hitler decrees; the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin and Hitler's look of utter disgust when Jesse Owens, a negro, won the 100 metres; the World Heavyweight title fight in 1938 between Joe Louis, a negro, and Germany's Max Schmeling which carried racial undertones and overtones. The fight lasted 2 minutes 4 seconds, and in that time Louis knocked Schmeling down four times. They say that some of Schmeling's teeth were found embedded in Louis's glove... Motor racing, a dangerous but genteel activity in the 1920s and early 1930s, was touched by this, too, and touched hard. The combustible mixture produced two Grand Prix races at Donington Park, in 1937 and 1938, which were just as dramatic, just as sinister and just as full of foreboding. This is the full story of those races.

I felt comfortable right the way through and it was great to finally get another win at one of the real classic F1 circuits. Now, we head to another of those in Monza. It’s an awesome track – so fast and with some of the most passionate fans you’ll see anywhere in the world. I was actually at this circuit with Sir Stirling Moss earlier this year, driving the banking in his old Mercedes W 196, which was just awesome. Having that taste of what it was like for those guys back in the day really gives you a feel for the history of this place and why it became so legendary. It’s still a big challenge today, too. Fast, but really technical at the same time with some heavy braking and big kerbs to ride for the best line. Racing in Italy brings back a lot of good memories for me and I’d love to add to those this weekend, so that’s the aim. Nico Rosberg Page 2 The race in Spa was definitely disappointing. My start was not good so I need to work on that and also on finding those extra tenths in qualifying to get back on top there.

Hans Ruesch, the Swiss racing driver, best-selling author and pioneer of the antivivisection movement, born on May 17, 1913, died on August 26, 2007, at the age of 94 of cancer in Lugano. He was the last surviving grand prix winner of the interwar "golden age" of motor racing. Two of his novels were made into Hollywood films, and his subsequent publications helped give impetus to the international antivivisection movement. Hans Ruesch in 1967 The son of a German-speaking Swiss father and an Italian-speaking Swiss mother, Ruesch spent the first 13 years of his life in Naples, where his father owned a textile mill. Schooled in Switzerland, he studied law briefly at the University of Zurich before leaving at the age of 19 to pursue his interest in fast cars. His first competitive drive was in 1932 in an MG, but before long he could be seen at the wheel of more potent machines from Alfa Romeo and Maserati. Third place in an Alfa in the 1500cc category at the 1932 Brno grand prix at the Masaryk-Ring in Czechoslovakia was followed by victories in various hill climbs in the Swiss Alps. In his second year, he acquired a three-litre Maserati, with which he picked up further hill climb trophies and set a new world speed record for the standing-start kilometer, averaging 88.33 mph at the Montlhery autodrome outside Paris. Ice racing on frozen lakes was a popular sport at the time, and in 1934 Ruesch and his Maserati 8CM won events on the Titisee and the Eibsee in Germany.

  • Holy Halls”: This Is the Home of the Spectacular Mercedes-Benz Vehicle Collection
Mercedes-Benz Classic Press Information 22 October 2019 Presented for the first time in book format: The Mercedes-Benz treasure chambers The “Holy Halls”: This is the home of the spectacular Mercedes-Benz vehicle collection. The book entitled “Holy Halls. The Secret Car Collection of Mercedes-Benz” offers breathtaking views and insights: with well-researched texts and brilliant photos, it is not only an exciting ramble through the brand’s treasure troves, in addition, 50 selected vehicles tell their own very special stories. Stuttgart. The Mercedes-Benz Classic collection comprises more than 1000 vehicles. No less than 160 of them can be admired at the museum in Untertürkheim. Many others are regularly showcased to the public at exhibitions and events around the globe. By far the largest part of the collection, however, is not freely accessible to the public: it is housed carefully in twelve inconspicuous commercial buildings in and around Stuttgart – the “Holy Halls”. However, the company did make an exception for a special occasion: the renowned specialist journalist and author of several books, Christof Vieweg, who also had the original idea to write the first book about Mercedes-Benz’s exclusive vehicle collection, had the opportunity to inspect the cars extensively and captured his impressions in informative texts. The photos in the “Holy Halls” were taken by photographer Igor Panitz, who is known above all for his automotive and architectural photos. The result is this mesmerising stroll through the unique treasure troves of Mercedes-Benz. Additional studio shots of 50 selected vehicles from the collection were taken under the direction of Harry Ruckaberle in the Sindelfingen photo studio that belongs to Akka Concept GmbH.

ACES WILD ACES WILD The Story of the British Grand Prix THE STORY OF THE Peter Miller Motor racing is one of the most 10. 3. BRITISH GRAND PRIX exacting and dangerous sports in the world today. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.
