  • Aviation Scenario in Today's World
Aviation Scenario in Today’s World With over 3000 jetliners on backlog and over 800 delivered in 2004, all signs indicate that we are just pass the high point of the jetliner “boom” in the classic boom/bust order cycle. But this has been a very unusual boom. For one thing, 2003 was expected to be a recovery year, not a peak year. With well over 650 orders it turned into a peak year although 2004 matched it with over 700 orders. And then to use an overused metaphor it just kept going like an Energizer Bunny—2005 has already passed 2004 in orders within a 7 month period and with major orders from the likes of Virgin Atlantic Airlines, Emirates, Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Gulf Air still expected to come, 2005 could well be the peak year for orders placed in Commercial Aviation History. Yet this cycle looks different. Airlines dint really queue up to place orders, rather manufacturing giants Airbus and Boeing pounded the pavement, aggressively selling aircrafts at a discount. In 2003, the leasing companies began to replace actual airlines in the order’s book—about 30% of the backlog now compromises lesser, who are essentially buying planes in the hope that the market will continue to grow. Jetliner pricing has been extremely soft with the list prices of both Boeing and Airbus remaining frozen from 2002-2004, the first time this has happened in a decade. In 2005 both manufacturer’s announced that they are raising list prices but list prices have become irrelevant. Anecdotal evidence suggests rampant discount pricing with rumors of as low prices as 80 million dollars for the Airbus 330s that were bought by North West Airlines which are listed at 240 million a piece.

  • Case 14 RICHARD BRANSON and the VIRGIN GROUP of COMPANIES in 2002*
Case 14 RICHARD BRANSON AND THE VIRGIN GROUP OF COMPANIES IN 2002* Richard Branson’s 50th birthday in July 2000 had no discernable effect either on Sir Richard’s energy or the entrepreneurial vigor of his Virgin group of companies. The new millennium saw Branson’s sprawling business empire spawn yet more new ventures. These included new companies within Virgin’s existing lines of business—a new airline in Australia, retail ventures in Singapore and Thailand, and wireless telecom ventures in Asia, the US and Australia—and entirely new enterprises. A number of these new ventures involved internet-based businesses: on line sales of cars and motorcycles through Virgin Car and Virgin Bike, online auctions through Virgin Net, Virgin’s ISP and portal business. Other initiatives included acquisition of a consortium a minority stake in Britain’s air traffic control system and a (unsuccessful) bid to run Britain’s National Lottery. In May 2002, Branson was planning yet more business ventures including a wireless phone company in Japan, a low-cost airline in the US, a car rental business in Australia, and an on-line pharmacy in the UK. Yet despite Branson’s unstoppable enthusiasm for launching new business ventures, there was increasing evidence of a rising tide of financial problems within the Virgin group: ??Virgin’s Megastores and its Our Price music chains was suffering heavily from the downturn in sales of music CDs. ??All of Virgin’s travel businesses—but especially its flagship, Virgin Atlantic—were suffering from the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Even before the terrorist attack, Virgin Atlantic was incurring significant losses.

  • Case 16 Richard Branson and the Virgin Group of Companies in 2007
CTAC16 4/17/07 14:03 Page 279 case 16 Richard Branson and the Virgin Group of Companies in 2007 Despite celebrating his 57th birthday at the beginning of 2007, Richard Branson showed no signs of flagging energy or the entrepreneurial vigor. During the last two weeks of January 2007, Virgin announced a slew of new initiatives. These included the creation of Virgin Bioverda, a joint venture to develop ethanol plants in the US; a bid for vacation company First Choice; and a proposal to take over rail services between London and Edinburgh. At the same time, Branson was negotiating an alliance with Tata Group to establish Virgin Mobile in India and preparing to buy 50 acres of land in Macau to build a $3 billion casino and leisure complex. Meanwhile, Virgin America – Branson’s San Francisco-based low-cost airline – was struggling to get approval from the US Department of Transporta- tion. Some believed that Virgin Galactic – Branson’s passenger spaceship service – might be first into the air. Yet despite being lauded for his entrepreneurship, eccentricity, and embodi- ment of “the friendly face of capitalism,” his Virgin group of companies remained a mystery to most outsiders – and to many insiders as well. At the beginning of 2007, there were 215 Virgin companies registered at Britain’s Companies House, of which 20 are identified as recently dissolved. However, most operations are conducted through the 36 companies listed on the Virgin website (see Appendix 1). While a number are Virgin companies are identified as “holding companies” – they exist only to own and manage other Virgin companies – there is no overall parent company for the group.

  • Virgin Group Has Led to Its Rapid Growth and Also Increased Its Revenue
BRAND MANAGEMENT BRAND EXTENSION INTRODUCTION Brand extension refers to the corporate activity whereby companies introduce new products, new product variants or product improvements by leveraging the brand equity of the existing parent brand. Brand extension is a type of short cut that companies resort to, to minimize risk and maximize their investment in the brand. Brand extension is a part of brand management to diversify and leverage the existing brand by entering into new product category by new product development. Positive images and strengths of existing brand / parent brand are leveraged to bring another success story for new product. Brand extension is increasingly used by companies as a part of strategy for product developments. It is viewed as one of means to attain integrated brand architecture. The use of same brand on existing product (parent brand) for a new product in different category (extension brand) increases rate of new acceptance and purchase intention to consumer. The strategy maintains efficiencies on advertising and promotion expenditures yet still can create new market segment. Company is not in position to allocate marketing expenses at the same level as spent by the parent brand, yet may gain similar level of success. A strong reputation of parent brand can minimize risk of new product launch by taking advantages on consumers͛ knowledge and experiences of the established brand. y In 1990s, 81% of new products used brand extension to introduce new brands and to create sales. y Launching a new product, is not only time consuming but also needs a big budget to create awareness and to promote a product's benefits.
