Sahand University of Technology (SUT) was established in 1989 in Tabriz, the capital of art and technology in Iran. SUT is a State university opera�ng under the rules of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of Islamic Republic of Iran with integrated and sophis�cated campus facili�es. The academic ac�vi�es of SUT are conducted in three campuses including Sahand Campus located in Sahand new town 25 km of Tabriz in an area of 400 hectares comprised of central manage- ment, administra�on, educa�onal and research units and academic facul�es, Tabriz Campus located in industrial part of Tabriz, comprised of Electronic Learning Center, Technology Incuba�on Center including spin-out companies and Open Training Center, and Varzeqan Campus, so called Varzeqan Technical College located in Varzeqan in the vicinity of Sungun copper mine located in 97 km of Tabriz, offering technology and engineering educa�on. SUT operates academic facul�es and research ins�tutes and centers to provide educa�on and research ac�vi�es. SUT offers over 20 BSc programs and more than 100 graduate programs of study in engineering, science and technology. More than half of students are enrolled in post-graduate courses. Our 190 outstanding mostly young academic staff along with a few thousand research associates, post-doctoral and post-graduate students conduct research in 32 research centers in various areas including Oil and Gas, , Renewable Energy, ICT, Environment, Biotech- nology, Mineral Processing, Advanced Materials, Structures, Automo�ve, Medical Engineering and Produc�vity and have been able to performing finalized or in progress research projects with an overall number of more than 400. I would like to say that SUT is proud of being the first organiza�on to ini�ate the crea�on of self-funded demand-driven research centers being independent of the government funds. In this regard, the research ac�vi�es are funded solely through one-to-one contracts with various industries and companies.

3 Sahand University of Tecnology Towards the 4th genera�on university, the Innova�on and Entrepreneurship Center, in the frame- work of student team-works, empowers students with required skills. SUT has taken ac�on by leveraging university's growth and innova�on center establishing 30 spin-out technology companies, 12 of which have become knowledge-based corpora�ons. In addi�on, SUT’s significant prac�cal technology-based par�cipa�on has been realized in the major na�onal projects of oil recovery in Soroush oil field, nano and biotechnology products and water purifica�on.

Furthermore, SUT’s academic staff and students have been awarded many na�onal and interna�on- al prizes and dis�nc�ons including Energy Globe World award, Green Produc�vity Specialist of APO, the country top professor award in years 2010 and 2018, the country top researcher award in Years 2011 and 2017, the Iranian academy of science dis�nguished young researcher awards in years 2011 and 2017, membership of 7 faculty members in specialized higher educa�on commi�ees of the country, as well as numerous student rewards received by student teams in na�on-wide science and sport compe��ons.

More recently, SUT appreciate interna�onal scien�fic collabora�on via either enhancing or launch- ing memorandum of understanding with foreign universi�es in order to establish the framework of admi�ng interna�onal students, and conduc�ng joint research projects amongst science and technology disciplines.

The Faculty of Materials Engineering at Sahand University of Technology was founded in 1990 and is the oldest and most famous faculty of and Engineering in northwest of Iran. At present, the faculty consists of 18 full-�me academic members including 8 Full Professors, 3 Associ- ate Professors and 7 Assistant Professors. More than 330 undergraduate and 300 graduate students are enrolled in BSc course of Metallurgy Engineering, MSc courses of NanoMaterials, Corrosion, Extrac�on metallurgy, Foundry and Cas�ng, Welding and Materials’ Selec�on and Characteriza�on and PhD course of Materials Science and Engineering in this faculty. Materials is a research leading faculty with dis�nguished publica�ons and research outcomes worldwide. This faculty was ranked among top 151-200 in the world in the Metallurgy Engineering subject in 2019 by ShanghaiRanking (the Academic Ranking of World Universi�es).

Sahand University of Tecnology 8 Introduc�on As part of the first and largest Iranian technical university in the west-northern of I.R. Iran, Faculty of Chemical Engineering has started its educa�onal ac�vi�es since 1992 by admi�ng BSc students in Petrochemical industry major. The Chemical Engineering Faculty also conducts MSc and Ph.D programs from 1994. E-learning educa�onal ac�vi�es of this faculty have also been started since 2011 in BSc and MSc degrees. The faculty is currently home to more than 550 students (310 BSc, 170 MSc and 70 Ph.D). The chemical engineering faculty with 28 academic members (8 full profes- sor, 9 associate professor and 11 assistant professor) is one of the pioneering facul�es in educa�on, research and knowledge base technologies in the country. In addi�on to offering graduate programs in chemical engineering, the faculty provides academic exper�se and support to mul�disciplinary bio and nanotechnology engineering programs of Sahand technical university and also supports novel techniques for treatment and recycling (reusing) of water and wastewater.

This college is located in the Sungun Copper Mining Complex in the region, known as the Red Gold of Iran and benefits from its dis�nct 5 faculty mem- bers as well as the faculty members of the Faculty of Mining Engineering of Sahand University of Technology. Currently the college operates one associate program with a student popula�on of 110. The loca�on and prac�cal coursed conducted dis�nguishes this college in this region and is very important in the cultural and scien�fic development of Arasbaran. The facili�es of the Varzaqan Technical college include libraries, laboratories such as chemistry, physics, electrical workshops, forging and lithology, compu�ng center, self-service and amphitheater, prayer rooms and training centers. The school is located in the best part of the tourist city of Varzaghan, which has tourist a�rac�ons such as Chichkolu, Jushin Fortress, Amir Arshad Palace, Sogandel Village Inscrip�on and lush Arasbaran forests.

Faculty of Civil Engineering started its academic ac�vi�es in the academic year of 1998-99 with the admission of 4 MSc students in and currently have undergraduate course in Civil Engineering, and MSc courses in Structural Engineering, , , and Offshore Structural Engineering, as well as PhD courses in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water and Hydraulic Structural Engineering and Coasts, Ports and Marine Structural Engineering. The faculty has 12 faculty members including 5 Full Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 4 Assistant Professors and one lecturer. It provides to students the educa�onal and research services through the concrete and geotechnical, structural, hydraulic and fluid mechanics labs. Sahand University of Tecnology 20 Introduc�on

The Faculty of Polymer Engineering launched in 2008 is one of the two independent facul�es of Polymer in Iran accredited by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of Islamic Republic of Iran. As a research leading academic faculty, it has been very successful in publishing scien�fic ar�cles, contribu�on to interna�onal conferences, performing research projects, and filing patents and has dis�nguished researchers and students. The faculty has 4 Full Professors,3 Associate Profes- sors and8 Assistant Professors and conducts educa�on programs in developing branches of polymer technology such as Nanotechnology, Biocompa�ble , and also Polymeriza�on Engineering, and Paint Technology. Ins�tute of Polymeric Materials (IPM) Ins�tute of Polymeric Materials (IPM) was established in 2002. The IPM started its work with two MSc programs in chemical and polymer engineering. Presently the IPM employs ten doctoral research associates, twelve Ph.D. candidates, twenty MSc students, and two technicians. In 2003 IPM got the permission of research center of polymeric materials from Sahand University of Technol- ogy (SUT).In 2003 IPM got the permission of research center of polymeric materials from ministry of science, research, and technology (MSRT) of Iran. In 2007, IPM was re-evaluated by ministry and promoted from research center to ins�tute. The main objec�ves of the IPM are to carry out innova- �ve, collabora�ve research work, the results of which can be applied to the long-term needs of the country specially west north regions of Iran in polymer and rela�ve industries with special emphasis given in the area of up-stream products (polymer reac�on engineering) and down-stream ac�vi- �es (polymer processing). In 2010, IPM was selected by the MSRT as a Scien�fic Pole (Excellent Center) named “Styrenic polymers” of the country. IPM collabora�ons with industries are mainly focused on research projects, internship plans, flagship plans, short courses, and reference labs.

The development of science brings about the refinement of our perspec�ve on nature and encourag- es us to exploit the future. The power of numbers and formulas is so strong that, sooner or later, applica�ons appear with n great expecta�ons. The faculty of Basic Sciences was launched along with the founda�on of SUT in 1989. In addi�on to conduc�ng taught fundamental courses of mathemat- ics and physics to all engineering students, it is a dynamic research oriented faculty, commi�ed to ensuring an outstanding learning experience for its students. Masters programs in Mathema�cs and Physics have been started since 2004 and 2005, respec�vely. Currently all programs are admi�ng students at all levels of BA, MSc and Ph.D. as well as postdoctoral researchers in Mathema�cs and Physics. The faculty has more than 24 full �me faculty members, 256 students and have had 379 Ph.D. and Masters graduate by the date. . In addi�on to regular lectures and workshops given by na�onal and interna�onal mathema�cians, 14th Iranian Conference on Fuzzy Systems was hosted by the faculty of science in August 2014. The faculty consists of teaching laboratories in Physics and research Laboratories of Plasma Physics and Solid Physics order to conduct frui�ul research and a�ract scien�fic talent including and has achieved magnificent research output including high quality publica�ons, hot papers and na�onal awards. Having started its academic roles in 1997 by admi�ng BSc students of Bioelectrical Engineering, Faculty of Biomedical Engineering began its ac�vi�es independently in 2017 as the second dis�nct Biomedical Engineering faculty in Iran accredited by the Ministry of Science, Research and technolo- gy of Islamic republic of Iran. The faculty aims at training talented biomedical engineers with B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees with two majors of Biomechanics and Bioelectric serving industry and academia. At present, the faculty benefits from11 full-�me academic members including one Full Professors, 2 Associate Professors and 8 Assistant Professors. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Sahand University of Technology began its ac�vi�es from 2003 at the B.Sc. level followed by conduc�ng programs at the M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels. The B.Sc. Programs consist of three majors including Thermo-fluids Mechanics, and Auto- mo�ve Engineering. M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs provide strong theore�cal basis with an emphasis on high-tech fields including prac�cal experience and numerical analysis. Sahand University of Tecnology 32 Introduc�on The Faculty of Petroleum and natural Gas Engineering (PNGE) at Sahand University of Technology (SUT) officially opened and started its individual ac�vi�es since Aug. 2017. The history of the exis�ng faculty dated back to 1993 when the main core of the team was established inside the Faculty of Chemical Engineering. The first students in the field of Petroleum Engineering were entered to SUT in 2003. PNGE is now a part of Soroosh oil field development team, in corpora- �on with Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC), therefore PNGE welcomes to mutual coopera�on with interna�onal companies with a good reputa�on in the area of petroleum engineering. PNGE admits undergraduate and post graduate students (Master degree and Ph.D.). It was part of the General and Interna�onal Rela�ons office since the establishment of University in 1989 un�l started its independent ac�vi�es from June 2019. The mission of the Interna- �onal Affairs is to advocate and support the University’s goal in interna�onal scien�fic coopera�on. The main tasks include promo�ng interna�onal academic collabora�on, communica�ng with partner ins�tu�ons, building the mechanism for dual degree and exchange student programs, and recrui�ng interna�onal students.
