Farnoosh Torabi: David Bach, thanks so much for joining us on So Money. David Bach: Farnoosh, it's my pleasure, it's great to be with you. FT: You are one of my first interviews and I couldn't be more honored. I don't know if you remember this David, but when I published my first book in 2008, 'You're So Money.' I tentatively reached out to you, prior to the book being published actually, and asked you for a quote, an endorsement, anything. I was a big fan, I had interviewed you years ago when one of your first books came out when I was a producer at New York One, and I thought, "Maybe he'll remember me, maybe he won't. I'm gonna email him and see if he'll be willing to endorse my book." And you were so generous, you responded right away, you gave me a fantastic quote, we put it on the cover, and no doubt helped me sell lots and lots of copies. So, I am forever indebted to you and now it's just such a nice turn of events, and now I'm here interviewing you for my first podcast, I am just really touched and this is so special, so thank you for that. 0:07:06 DB: Well, you are so welcome and I totally remember it, like it was yesterday, and I would like to think it was yesterday, but boy, a couple of years have gone by since then and I'm so proud of you and the career that you've built and the huge success that you've had.

Newman ABSTRACT Across a broad range of sectors, Europe is increasingly shaping global public policy. Existing research stressing the importance of market size for inter- national regulatory influence cannot satisfactorily account for this. We contend that the rise of the regulatory state within Europe has significant international impli- cations, augmenting Europe’s ability to shape global market rules. The article devel- ops an institutional explanation of regulatory influence stressing domestic regulatory capacity. An analysis of two hotly contested transatlantic policy fields – data privacy and financial market regulation – provides a first test of the argument. KEY WORDS Data privacy; EU external affairs; market regulation; regulatory state; securities.

  • Frame Or Get Framed: the Critical Role of Issue Framing in Non-Market Management
Frame or Get Framed: THE CRITICAL ROLE OF ISSUE FRAMING IN NONMARKET MANAGEMENT David Bach Daniel J. Blake How a social or political issue is framed shapes the “nonmarket” context that surrounds it. Issue frames are not random; rather they are the product of strategic behavior by firms, government agencies, NGOs, and similar actors. Frames are not fixed and issues can be reframed over time. Framing is a powerful strategic tool that enables firms to shape the structure of the nonmarket environment to their advantage. This article identifies and illustrates five distinct pathways through which firms can shape different dimensions of the nonmarket envi- ronment. (Keywords: Business-Government Relations, Business and Society, Politics, Strategic Management) apturing a central insight of behavioral economics, The Economist recently argued that “Our response to questions very much depends on how the issue is framed: we think surcharges on credit cards are C ”1 unfair, but believe a discount for paying with cash is reasonable. The same applies to the social and political environment of business: whether the public supports a company’s quest to change government policy or heeds an activist group’s call for a boycott often depends on how an issue is framed. That fact that framing matters greatly for the way companies manage their “nonmar- ket” environment is evident when coal producers emphasize the benefits of energy independence, automobile manufacturers highlight the advantages of clean diesel, and Hollywood decries growing movie piracy. Despite the apparent preva- lence of framing, however, most managerial tools guiding firms’ nonmarket man- agement do not feature framing prominently.

  • International Cooperation and the Logic of Networks: Europe and the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)
International Cooperation and the Logic of Networks: Europe and the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) David Bach BRIE Working Paper 139 E-conomy Projectä Working Paper 14 July 2000 ©Copyright 2000 by the author David Bach is a graduate student, Department of Political Science, University of Berkeley, California. [email protected] Generous support for production of the BRIE Working Papers Series was provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Introduction1 Contrary to the United States, the European Union (EU) has established a single technical standard for second generation wireless telecommunications. The successful creation of the pan- European digital standard GSM2 is of utmost industrial significance. It has provided Europe’s equipment manufacturing industry with a market large enough to exploit economies of scale and has thus enabled European manufacturers to become world leaders in the mobile communications industry.3 Given the centrality and crucial importance of wireless technology for the emerging information society and digital economy, the story of the establishment of GSM is of interest to anybody studying the growth and trajectory of digital technology and its commercial applications. After all, the nature of digital economies implies that control over network evolution translates into control over the architecture of the digital marketplace, as François Bar has argued.4 Hence, control of and influence over network evolution has global economic ramifications. In addition, however, the political process that enabled GSM featured pivotal supranational leadership in the form of European Commission initiatives in a domain that has traditionally been dominated by national players. Grasping standard setting in the case of GSM thus also contributes to an understanding of the changing governance patterns of the European economy and consequently is of interest to anybody concerned with issues of European integration as a whole.

  • David Bach Is Here Everybody! Welcome to So Money
SM 879 Transcript EPISODE 879 “DB: First of all, I believe that the reason people are failing financially is that for the most part, people are financially illiterate.” [INTRODUCTION] [0:00:41.4] FT: We have one of my favorite financial pros on So Money today. David Bach is here everybody! Welcome to So Money. I’m your host Farnoosh Torabi. David is one of the most trusted financial experts and bestselling financial authors of our time. He’s on the show. I feel very lucky, he has written nine consecutive New York Times bestsellers with over seven million copies in print including two number one New York Times bestsellers. His latest book which is why we brought him back on the show is called The Latte Factor: Why You Don’t Need to Be Rich to Live Rich. Check out thelattefactor.com. This book takes a bit of a departure from David’s typical approach to writing, it’s a fiction book. Of course, still has a lot of David’s philosophies around how to build wealth but this is a heartwarming parable that David wrote with bestselling coauthor John David Mann who wrote The Go-Giver, tell us a story of Zoe, a 20 something woman, living and working in New York City who is struggling to make ends meet, she’s got a lot of credit card debt, student loan debt, sound familiar to anyone? Just trying to make ends meet and through the book, David demystifies the secrets to achieving financial freedom. I’m just going to cut right to the interview.
