THE AMATEUR FOOT 4L-' OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE VICTORIAN AMATEUR FOOTBALL ASSOCIATIO N A ugust 16, 1986 Price : 80 cents VOL. 86 ®. 19 Out at Marcellin the home side will tackle the competition leaders in what will no doubt be a great c,,; rne. I feel sorry for Marcellin meeting Collegians today, for I really believe that the Eagles are ( LirrentlY capable of beating the remaining 8 sdes at this stage of the year and especially as the win could well save them from relegation . They've won their last 3 games in good style playing honest team ;ootball and are bound to give a pretty good account of themselves today . However no matter how e11 they play. Collegians will play better. As North coach Mark Hannabery said last week when I spoke to him of the sides in the four in general and Collegians in particular, "They must be a good side they've won 13 straight" . He's right - theirball skills with hand and footare superiorto all otherteams and their running game and discipline unmatched . Sentimentcan't count here, Collegians will win because they are the best team and they've proved it not once but 13 times ! North O .B. face a danger game at home against Caulfield Grammarians whose performance in the latter half of the season has been as surprising as it has been praiseworthy . The club has shown a strength of character and willingness to survive that many thought it lacked and they are quite capable of completing the season with an even ledger . North was none too impressive last week, although I give Ivanhoe credit here as it played with much tenacity and determination . They will need to shwo more cohesiveness to beat their visitors who will certainly miss the services of Alan Nalder and David Matthews. North will be hoping for the return of Tony Egan, Luke Morse and Dominic Butera and at What a round of matches! The value of the Promotion and Relegation system in providing an even home should just scrape in and hold onto second spot for at least another week . and interesting season is again evident . Uni Blues must be glad they've such a useful percentage because it may be all that saves them from In A Section Caulfield's shock win over De La Salle tipped De La out of second spot and has given relegation . After watching Ivanhoe last week I believe they're ready for a win and today at the Uni the 'Fields breathing space in the relegation battle . Ormond returns to the top 4 after beating the Blues in a Blues will become their 5th success for the season . see-sawing struggle . Marcellin kept its hopes of A Section in '87 alive by downing Old Scotch and I :k Y k * z * * + * * * k t I Collegians confirmed its the hottest favourite in many years with another sizzling performance . They will live to regret Fawkner . O.M's coach A ndy Ristrom was on the phone at 5 past 9 with °You wouldn't have a clue" etc . that stumble at "Fawkner" Park . and "please don't pick us this week" . I assured him I wouldn't!! O .M .'s win places it in a mini final against Surely Old Xavs couldn't lose 3 in a row and so I'm tipping them to restore some lost confidence by St . Bernards who, as predicted, went down to Old Brighton which kept the South road boys well in beating St . Kilda CBOC and Parkside should cement its place in the B Section 4 by toppling contention for survival . Old Xaverians lost its second game on end but they've a few outat present so its Brighton who nonetheless will be looking for an upset to keep their hopes alive of remaining ; no need for panic stations. What a game awaits the C Section followers at Heidelberg Park when Banyule take on Old Haileybury . The winner knows it will play in the finals and for the loser its moth balls . Kevins at Kooyong , ~ri * nx~ * x * . * ~ I ~ ; Looking now to today's winners : At Elsternwick Park a jolted De La play Bulleen Templestowe who have, fortunately for De La, lost all confidence . The match means much to both clubs and certainly to both coaches. I lean towards De La as the club has a fine record of achievement when things aren't going so well . Of late their performances have been more consistent and the fact that many of the side have played in so many finals in recent season is testimony that they can handle the pressure of big occasions. In such an even season, apart of course from the sheer brilliance of Collegians, Bulle e n Templestowe could drop this game, win the final home and home encounter and still make the four . However, I'm sure that their last ditch stand will come today . They know they can beat De La and did so convincingly back on June 14th . Perhaps the change to its canary yellow strip may provide the omen? If De La can return to its accustomed running game it should win quite easily, but I doubt whether the Bullants will be any pushover and the result probably rests on who has the greater commitment to victory. The outcome? De La's experience and steadiness suggest success today. At Flinders Park Ormond will face a desparate Old Scotch in a game of great importance for both . Ormond must win to ensure 4th spot whilst a Scotch victory would certainly take all the pressure off its last game against Ivanhoe . Ormond's record at Scotch is a poor one . However if Marcellin could penetrat the Cardinal's defence and bottle up its forwards certainly the "Monds" can do likewise and the taste of success last week may be the catalyst needed to propel the side into the finals and re charge the batteries for an all out attack on back to back flags . I'm going for Ormond whose strength at the ball and ability to cover the Old Scotch 'stars' will decide the issue . Scotch let me, and all its supporters, down last week . They were favourites and had much for which to play and yet couldn't come up with the goods . As they're still in the same boat to a great extent I've no reason to see that a week has changed things and as football means a lot mor to more of the Ormond wighteen than its opponents, the Brown and Blue's victory today should decide the A Section 4 for 1986 . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1986 4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1986 5 enthuse over I select Power House purley on sentiment (I once played with 'House) . David McMahon, strong, good State Bank Univ. Blacks Hampton Rovers team player, magnificent kick, who could paly centre, half back or ruck rover . Melbourne Collingwood St. Kild a At centre half forward Phonse Kyne may be a surprise . In this most difficult of positions, there were few RUCKS DENIS CORDNER(VC.) DAVID SHAW to select from. However, to quote from Stremski's "Kill for Collingwood", Phonse Kyne records that IAN LAW "Everyone remembered me as a ruckman, but I played my best football when I was a centre half Univ. Blacks Univ. Blues Old Scotch forward in the 1935 and 1936 premierships" . Stremski states that the goal to goal line of , Melbourn e Essendon Hawthorn , , Phonse Kyne, was Collingwood's best line of all time . INTERCHANGE STEVEN CLARKE Bulleen Temp . Graeme Atkinson's "The Book of V .F.L. Finals" confirms Kyne's great play as a centre half forward . Essendon For full forward I have picked the athletic Ian Graham, good enough to be in that position in Collingwood's KEN MELVILLE Univ. Blacks 1964 and 1966 grand final teams . With this team in frontof him Ian would be capable of kicking at least5 Melbourne goals a game irrespective of how good the opposition was . A possible for this position was Neil Roberts ALAN LA FONTAINE Univ. Blacks who started his career at full forward in a very weak St. Kilda team . Melbourne Unbelievable talent was available for the rucks - Don and Denis Cordner, Gary Dempsey, Chris Mtichell, Neville Crowe, John Kennedy, Dick Fenton-Smith, Ray Gabelick, John Winneke . the name of RUNNER JOHN FISHER Kew Bill Morris appeared in the original list of players . However, records available do not indicate that Bill Hawthorn played any games with Old Scotch, or any amateur team . If he had, he would have been the first ruck COACH JOHN KENNEDY selection . No one ever speaks of Denis Cordner (Melbourne) other than to say what a very great player Teachers College he was . Denis was a tireless high leaping ruckman who was a skilled ball handlerwith enough pace for Hawthorn today's style of game . As ruck rover David Shaw (U . Blues), a very versatile player, would fit very well TRAINER LARRY MADISON Ormond into the team. David who played centre half forward with Blues found the celebrated Ken Fraser in that Fitzroy position at Essendon . As a mark of his versatility David played back pocket in Essendon's 1962 Premiership and then ruck rover in the 1965 team thatalso won the flag . David would be able to change MANAGERS N .C. RUNDLE with David McMahon on the flank . The other two ruckman would be Ray Gabelick (Collingwood) and J.F.X. DILLON Neville Crowe (Richmond), in backand forward pockets respectively . Ian Graham was a f.ast leading full forward and any of the three ruckmen could paly the ruckman-goal square role well . Should the centre BAGGAGE & A.H . STEPHEN S half forward be too big for Don Williams, Ray Gabelich could go to centre half back, a position he played TRANSPORT well in interstate matches for W .A. A There were surprisingly few rovers to pick from, but the quality was certainly there . I went for Ian Law GEAR .J. O'CALLAGHAN (Hawthorn) and Ross Smith (St. Kilda) one a Brownlow runner-up and the othera medallist . Othergood DOCTOR Dr. BRIAN COSTELLO players were John Newnham (Fitzroy) and Steven Clark (Essendon) who probably has his best football ahead of him .
