We spent many fascinating hoursScene at talks and in symposia with guest scholars, Dear Friends including, most recently, Damir Arsenijević, one of the leading voices in reconciliation efforts through literature and art in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, and Mikhail Iampolski, whose work blends philosophy, art history and the semiotics of culture. What is most impressive is the fact that many of these lectures were arranged and hosted not by our faculty, but by the Avant-Garde Interest Group, a graduate student assemblage of scholars led by our own Aleksandar (Sasha) Bošković and Vladislav (Vlad) Beronja. Another of our graduate students, Sarah Sutter, helped lead the Interdisciplinary Music Form, which also sponsored residencies and lectures. Our professors are in the process of writing some very important books. Professor Tatjana Aleksić’s book analyzing how the sacrificed body—in Balkan myth, literature, and cinema—has served as a metaphor for the coerced elimination of difference in the name of building a community, and Professor Sofya Khagi’s book investigating articulations of verbal skepticism (the notion that language is unable to furnish a full expression of the world) in Russian poetry from the Romantics to Mandelstam, Brodsky, and Kibirov are both virtually complete. Also nearing completion are Professor Jindřich Toman’s book on Czech-Jewish cultural interactions in the 19th century and Professor Omry Ronen’s monograph on Russian literature of the 1970s. Professor Olga Maiorova’s next book will probe Russia’s national self-perception in relation to its cultural appropriation of Central Asia and how that appropriation altered the strategies Russians used to encode their imperial impulse. Professor Mikhail Krutikov’s book project concerns works written in emigration (in the United States, Canada, Germany and Israel) by Russian Jews and their complex relationship to current issues in three cultures: Jewish, Russian and the culture of their respective adopted countries. Professor Michael Makin is completing a book on the stylization of national form in the culture and social life of Russia from the late 19th century to the present, dealing with responses that range from parody to the sincere emulation of past genres and norms in literature, the visual arts, architecture, and popular culture. Professor Benjamin Paloff is currently examining how new notions of space and time changed the representation of subjectivity and freedom in the interwar period in Russian, Polish and Czech Modernisms. Professor Andrew Herscher’s current project, a fitting sequel to his book on the destruction of architectural heritage in the former Yugoslavia during the ethnic strife of the 1990s, deals with the subsequent (and opposite) process presently underway in the region: efforts by ordinary citizens to reconstruct, create, or preserve monuments that are the patrimony of the various ethnic and religious communities. Our graduate students also continued their research on an impressive array of interdisciplinary topics. Those at the most advanced stage of their dissertation research include Vlad, who is researching the work of avant-garde artists, filmmakers and writers who use the material of both the former Yugoslavia’s mass consumer culture and of Communist propaganda to fashion works which comment critically on contemporary society and politics; Sasha, who is studying the genre of photopoetry (poetry interlaced with photographic collages) and the role it played in avant-garde movements in Russia, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia in the period between the World Wars; and Yanina (Yana) Arnold, who is tracing the role that “literary lawyers” played in the representation of trials and juries in Russian literature of the late 19th century, as the country experienced Western-style legal advocacy and trial-by-jury in the wake of Alexander II’s reforms. Not only these three students, but many others as well, have been active in presenting their research at academic conferences. We are very proud of the work they have been doing and will feature more of it in future issues of Slavic Scene. We also launched a joint effort with the University of Illinois, which will enable both of our departments to maintain and enhance our offerings. New technology, which brings students “virtually” into a classroom from afar, is allowing courses taught in one of our universities to serve students in another simultaneously. Thus, for example, next year we will teach First Year Czech here (for our students and those at Illinois), while Second Year Czech will be taught at Illinois for students from both places. In the future, we may extend such “courseshare” projects to Ukrainian language instruction as well. Your generous contributions to the Benjamin Stolz Endowment and the John Mersereau, Jr. Fund for supporting graduate student research have been instrumental in promoting research and language study by our graduate students in the countries of our region. This work would not have been possible for many of them without your help.     Slavic Languages and Literatures University of Wisconsin­ Madison Depar tme n t Newsletter Volume 9 Summer 2008 Letter from the Chair David Bethea This has been another very busy and productive year for the Slavic Department at UW‐Madison. There have been changes, some difficult and some most welcome, but we continue on in our typically upbeat (yet hopefully realistic) manner. The three biggest changes affecting the immediate fate of the department are: the December departure from active teaching of Professor Yuri Shcheglov, the spring promotion to Associate Professor with tenure of Andrew Reynolds, and the imminent arrival as permanent new colleague of Assistant Professor Irina Shevelenko from the Smolny Institute in St. Petersburg. As many of you know personally, Yuri Konstantinovich has been a solid rock in our program’s foundation for many years; a person of encyclopaedic interests and high scholarly standards, that rare individual who is capable single‐handedly of covering topics from Old Church Slavonic to Ilf and Petrov, from Latin poetry to Hausa grammar, he will be sorely missed. As a wise man once told me, no one is ever really “replaceable”; the most we can do is fill a position with the best person we can at the given time and under the given circumstances. The good news is we have found an outstanding younger colleague in Irina Shevelenko, one with superb bi‐cultural academic training (Tartu, Stanford), and one whose scholarly panoply across centuries and disciplines should enrich our program for years to come. For those of you who know Andrew Reynolds, we could not be happier for him or for us: with his exceptional erudition and taste, his kindness and accessibility, and his willingness to “flex” for the department in a variety of teaching and admin roles, he is truly one of a kind.

    The CES Gazette Volume 2 Issue 1 Fall 2004 The Center for European Studies Gains Recognition from the European Union This summer, the Center for European Studies (CES) was awarded two grants by the European Union, gaining international recognition for its efforts to develop European Studies and Europe- related programs both at UF and throughout the state. The CES and UF are now formally recognized as EU funded institutions, which will facilitate our pursuit of future EU grant opportunities. The first grant, The New Face of Europe: The European Union in the 21st Century, comes from the European Commission Delegation in the US. Catering to Floridians, this outreach grant is meant to facilitate learning and better understanding of the unprecedented events currently taking place in Europe. The grant covers four different workshops targeting such varied audiences as the Florida state political leaders and scholars, small and medium businesses, elementary and high school teachers and students, and the general public. The first of these workshops introduces Florida’s political leaders and policy makers to the European Union. The next two workshops build on existing programs that were successfully implemented during the first year of CES activities. Thus, Doing Business in the New Europe workshop aims to increase awareness about the European Union among the Florida business community. In turn, Teaching about the European Union introduces Florida’s elementary and high school teachers to recent developments in the European Union and encourages them to incorporate related topics in their lesson plans and classroom activities. The final workshop/festival is a new one-day event designed to highlight the cultural diversity of the enlarged European Union.

    Information for the Polish Institute in Vilnius Cooperation between Poland and Lithuania with regard to NAWA’s tasks NAWA offers a wide range of programmes aimed at students, scientists and higher education institutions. In addition, it provides opportunities to learn Polish. 1. Programmes for students a. Poland My First Choice (PMFC) A programme covering second-cycle studies in all fields with a monthly scholarship of PLN 2,000. Additionally, scholarship holders at public universities are exempt from education fees. Candidates make an independent choice of the university and the field of study. The student can choose the language of study – Polish or another. In the call for proposals for the Programme in 2020, Lithuanian citizens submitted 7 applications, and 4 applicants were promised a scholarship. Lithuanian citizens represent 6.4% of all PMFC scholarship holders. b. The Gen. Anders Programme for the Polish diaspora – first-degree studies and single Master’s degree studies as well as second-degree studies The Programme enables young people of Polish origin to study in Polish at the universities subordinate to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (apart from modern languages, with the exception of Polish Philology). They receive a monthly scholarship of PLN 1,250– 1,500 (the rates are different at medical and artistic faculties, where they are determined by the competent ministers). The studies may be preceded by a yearly preparatory course (also with a scholarship). In addition, the Programme offers the possibility to complete first-degree studies and single Master’s degree studies at public universities subordinate to the Minister of Health (medical studies) and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage (studies in arts).
