Roux Pretoria 2009 S T R E L I T Z I A This series has replaced Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa and Annals of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens which SANBI inherited from its predecessor organisations. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It sym- bolises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustain- able use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. • The Case of Ferns Flora of the Gibraltar Arc
ARTÍCULOS Botanica Complutensis ISSN-e 1988-2874 https://dx.doi.org/10.5209/bocm.75454 The historical biogeography and conservation value of taxonomic distinctness: The case of ferns flora of the Gibraltar Arc Ángel Enrique Salvo Tierra1; José C. Báez2; Antonio Flores-Moya3 Abstract. The pteridofloras of nine locations in the Gibraltar Arc were analyzed using a taxonomic distinctness index. We found that the index could be a proxy of historical biogeography of the pteridofloras from this area. Moreover, the value of the taxonomic distinctness index of the different locations showed relevant relationships with certain geographic variables. Finally, we hypothesize about the value of the information derived from taxonomic distinctness index for conservation of the pteridoflora in the GibraltarArc.

Revision accepted: 9 December 2014. Abstract. Mir SA, Mishra AK, Pala SA, Reshi ZA, Sharma MP. Ferns and fern allies of District Shopian, Kashmir Valley, India Biodiversitas 16: 27-43. Shopian, recently created hilly district of Kashmir valley, Jammu and Kashmir is surrounded by the lofty mountains of Pir-Panjal range. More than half area of district is occupied by different forests, subalpine, alpine and mountainous zones. Great altitudinal variation, adequate rainfall, high forest cover, large number of streams, springs and topographic variations render the district worthy for supporting rich fern flora. Therefore, the current study was aimed to undertake in-depth systematic survey of different habitats of Shopian for the collection of diversity of pteridophytes. Specimens were collected during 2010, 2011 and 2012 growing seasons from June to November. A total 81 species of ferns and fern allies belonging 27 genera and 11 families were reported. The dominant families of the region are Dryopteridaceae (25 species) followed by Woodsiaceae (16 species), Aspleniaceae (13 species) and Pteridaceae (12 species). Similarly, the dominant genera collected from here are Dryopteris (14 species), Asplenium (13), Polystichum (11 species) and Athyrium (6 species).

E-mail:* [email protected] Abstract. Asplenium Genus is present inside Alexandru Beldie Herbarium from „Marin Drăcea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry. This fact is consolidated by the presence of 92 vouchers containing plants of this genus, as well as information about them. The data refers to their harvesting location which covers almost the entire country and important names of the specialists who contributed to the development of the collection by gathering or identifying Asplenium plants. The present paper organizes and presents the Asplenium species present in the herbarium, reaching a total number of 16 species and 88 samples based on the year and place of their harvest, as well as the specialist who collected the plant. Additional criteria are also followed, such as: drawer number, voucher number, botanical collection, species name, date of collection, place of collection, the specialist who collected and / or determined the species and the degree of conservation. This last criterion was placed on a scale from 1 to 4 with 1 meaning a very good state of preservation while 4 represents a very poor state of preservation. In addition, the most important Asplenium species from the herbarium are also described from the point of view of their abundance in the collection.
