Quinnipiac University to present Fred Friendly Award to Charlie Rose of CBS and PBS on June 15 in New York City Hamden, Conn. – May 10, 2016 – Quinnipiac University will honor Charlie Rose, anchor/executive editor of the PBS programs “Charlie Rose” and "Charlie Rose: This Week,” and co-host of “CBS This Morning” at its 23ndannual Fred Friendly First Amendment Award luncheon at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15, at the Metropolitan Club, One East 60th St., New York City. This invitation-only event is not open to the public. Since 1994, the School of Communications has presented the Fred Friendly First Amendment Award to honor those who have shown courage and forthrightness in preserving the rights set forth in the First Amendment. The award bears the name of the former CBS News president and champion of freedom of speech. “It is fitting that this year’s Fred Friendly First Amendment Award is being presented to Charlie Rose,” said Lee Kamlet, dean of the School of Communications. “It was Fred who pioneered the production of live and unrehearsed television interviews. Charlie has turned that into an art form, bringing countless illuminating conversations to his audiences on PBS and CBS. And like Fred, Charlie has an innate and seemingly insatiable curiosity about people and their stories. No one knows better than Charlie that it takes hard work, discipline and a wide range of interests to prepare for and conduct a solid interview. Our students would do well to learn from him.” In addition to co-hosting “CBS This Morning,” Rose also is a contributing correspondent to “60 Minutes.” His recent interviews include Russian President Vladimir Putin, Apple CEO Tim Cook, comedian Larry David, Broadway’s Lin-Manuel Miranda and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton. Rose continues to serve as executive editor and host of “Charlie Rose," which appears nightly on PBS and in prime time on Bloomberg Television in the United States and around the world. Since 1991, “Charlie Rose” has aired countless hours with Nobel Laureates and extraordinary men and women of science, politics, art, business, sports, technology, literature and entertainment. Its round oak table and simple black backdrop provide an intimate atmosphere for intelligent conversation. These conversations have made the broadcast a cultural and intellectual archive of the times. “There are honors, and there are honors,” said Rose. “To be in the same sentence with Fred Friendly is an honor. In addition, I have had the great pleasure of knowing his wonderful wife, Ruth. I hope we share many things, but I know we share great curiosity and the fundamental belief in the power of dialogue, conversation and the pursuit of truth.” Rose is the recipient of the Legion d’honneur, many honorary degrees, and numerous awards from the scientific and journalism communities including the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism. In 2014, he appeared on TIME's list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. Rose won both Emmy and Peabody awards for his September 2013 interview with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that made worldwide headlines.
