  • 2019 NCBJ Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. - Early Ideas Regarding Extracurricular Activities for Attendees and Guests to Consider
2019 NCBJ Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. - Early Ideas Regarding Extracurricular Activities for Attendees and Guests to Consider There are so many things to do when visiting D.C., many for free, and here are a few you may have not done before. They may make it worthwhile to come to D.C. early or to stay to the end of the weekend. Getting to the Sites: • D.C. Sites and the Pentagon: Metro is a way around town. The hotel is four minutes from the Metro’s Mt. Vernon Square/7th St.-Convention Center Station. Using Metro or walking, or a combination of the two (or a taxi cab) most D.C. sites and the Pentagon are within 30 minutes or less from the hotel.1 Googlemaps can help you find the relevant Metro line to use. Circulator buses, running every 10 minutes, are an inexpensive way to travel to and around popular destinations. Routes include: the Georgetown-Union Station route (with a stop at 9th and New York Avenue, NW, a block from the hotel); and the National Mall route starting at nearby Union Station. • The Mall in particular. Many sites are on or near the Mall, a five-minute cab ride or 17-minute walk from the hotel going straight down 9th Street. See map of Mall. However, the Mall is huge: the Mall museums discussed start at 3d Street and end at 14th Street, and from 3d Street to 14th Street is an 18-minute walk; and the monuments on the Mall are located beyond 14th Street, ending at the Lincoln Memorial at 23d Street.

  • Budget Letter
February 28, 2019 The Honorable Muriel Bowser Mayor of the District of Columbia 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Suite 300 Washington, DC 20002 Re: Fiscal Year 2020 Budget Proposal Dear Mayor Bowser: As you prepare your Fiscal Year 2020 (“FY20”) proposed budget, I would like to highlight a few Ward 5 priorities and request that you consider funding them in FY20. Last year, your Fair Shot budget made critical investments essential to Ward 5 residents such as supporting $20 million in funding for a new Lamond-Riggs library; $500,000 for new Main Streets and Clean Teams along South Dakota/Riggs Road and Bladensburg; and $300,000 for the design and creation of a statue of native Washingtonian and civil rights leader, Charles Hamilton Houston. Our Ward 5 FY20 budget is about making the District equitable and inclusive for all. From investing in affordable housing to keep residents in their homes to expanding behavioral health and trauma informed services, together, our Ward 5 FY20 budget requests moves the District towards real achievable and equitable results. Further, our Ward 5 budget represents feedback gathered from residents during my Ward 5 Budget Engagement Forum, and consideration of over 300 hours of Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) and civic association meetings. 1. Affordable Housing Affordable housing remains one of the highest priorities of Ward 5 residents. With your leadership and the support of the Council, we have made critical investments in the Housing Production Trust Fund, adjusted amounts for HPAP, and other important steps to ensure housing affordability. However, the Washington Post just reported that “[i]ncome inequality is rising so fast… that data can’t keep up”.

  • Amendment to the Pennsylvania Avenue Plan, Square 491, Parcel B
Executive Director’s Recommendation Commission Meeting: December 5, 2019 PROJECT NCPC FILE NUMBER Amendment to the Pennsylvania Avenue P8072 Plan, Square 491, Parcel B, at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW NCPC MAP FILE NUMBER 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW 1.21(00.00)45028 Washington, DC APPLICANT’S REQUEST SUBMITTED BY Approve Plan amendment and United States General Services Administration concept site and building plans REVIEW AUTHORITY PROPOSED ACTION Amendments to the PADC Plan and Square Approve Plan amendment and Guidelines pursuant to 40 U.S.C. § 6702(d) concept site and building plans and the Memorandum of Agreement dated ACTION ITEM TYPE July 25, 1996, 61 Fed. Reg. 41789 Staff Presentation PROJECT SUMMARY The General Services Administration (GSA), on behalf of Johns Hopkins University (JHU), has submitted proposed amendments to the Pennsylvania Avenue Plan and related concept site development plans for 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. The site is bounded by 6th Street on the west, C Street on the north, Pennsylvania Avenue on the south, and the Consulate for the Canadian Government on the east. It is currently home to the Newseum; after 11 years, the museum will be moving from its current location after it closes on December 31, 2019. JHU is in the process of purchasing 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, and proposes a major renovation of the building resulting in an additional 55,000 gross square feet of interior space. This additional space will be captured as part of an interior atrium and floor slab reconfiguration, resulting in a redesign of the exterior façade. As the result of a proposed conversion from the existing museum use to an innovative, state-of-the-art educational facility and additional gross square footage, an amendment is required to ensure the project conforms with the Pennsylvania Avenue Plan.
