Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -

Announces: THE SHADOW Composed and Conducted by JERRY GOLDSMITH Intrada Special Collection Volume ISC 204 Universal Pictures' 1994 The Shadow allowed composer Jerry Goldsmith to put his imprimatur on the darkly gothic phase of the superhero genre that developed in the 1990s. Writing for a large orchestra, Goldsmith created a score that found the perfect mix between heroism and menace and resulted in one of his longest scores. Goldsmith’s main title music introduces many of the score’s core elements: an unnerving pitch bend, played by synthesizers; a grandly powerful brass melody for the Shadow; and a bouncing electronic figure that will become a key rhythmic device throughout the score. Goldsmith’s classic sounding Shadow theme and the score’s large scale orchestrations complemented the film’s period setting and lavish look, while the composer’s trademark electronics helped better position the film for a contemporary audience. When the original soundtrack for The Shadow was released in 1994, it presented only a fraction of Jerry Goldsmith’s hour-and-twenty-minute score, reducing the composer’s wealth of action material to two cues and barely hinting at the complete score’s range and scope. In particular, Goldsmith’s elegant and haunting love theme—one of his best of the ’90s—plays only briefly at the very end of the album. This premiere presentation of the complete score represents one of the most substantial restorations of a Goldsmith soundtrack, illuminated by the fact that just 30 minutes of the full 85-minute score appeared on the original 1994 soundtrack album. -

A Brush With the Air Force 42 AIR FORCE Magazine / July 2007 prototype for Corkin was Air Force Col. Milton Caniff was out front with “Terry and Philip Cochran, a noted World War II pilot and leader of air commandos in the Pirates,” but other cartoonists also found Burma. (See “The All-American Air- their calling in the wild blue yonder. man,” March 2000, p. 52.) He became a continuing character in “Terry.” In a famous “Terry and the Pirates” Sunday page from 1943, Corkin opened with, “Let’s take a walk, Terry,” and then delivered an inspirational talk about A Brush With the war and the Air Force as he and the newly fledged pilot Terry strolled around the flight line. The page was “read” into the Congressional Record and reported in the newspapers. Terry, Flip, and their colleagues had a great following among airmen, and the Air Force By John T. Correll the strip had considerable morale and public relations value. Gen. Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, Chief of the Army Air Forces, assigned an officer to as- sist Caniff with any technical details he needed. Caniff produced another strip, “Male Call,” without charge for camp and base newspapers. It featured Miss Lace, who was reminiscent of the Dragon Lady but less standoffish. It is difficult today to comprehend what a big deal the funnies used to be. Everybody read the comic strips. Characters were as well known as movie stars. The strips were printed much larger than present comic strips are. On Sunday, a popular strip might get a whole color page to itself. -

Tony Hancock: BBC Publicity Shot for Hancock’s Half Hour, November 1956 The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society (THAS) Since its creation in 1976, the THAS has dedicated itself to preserving and promoting the works of Tony Hancock and, more crucially, to finding his broadcasts that were missing from the archives. Over the decades, these efforts have yielded a wealth of material, most notably lost episodes of his most beloved work on Hancock’s Half Hour for both television and radio. Many of these have now been located and returned to the BBC; some feature in this special series of Collectibles, now into 1 its third volume. However, many still remain lost at this time. In addition, our efforts have found other material – shows recorded before Hancock became a household name – from series such as Calling All Forces, Variety Bandbox and Star Bill. Again, examples of these can be found in this series. In the previous volumes, there was an extensive analysis of missing recordings from Hancock’s radio career, and, as ever, we remain hopeful that some of these recordings will emerge from private collections or, perhaps, the archives of the BBC or other institutions. In these notes, we will focus on a number of missing recordings and shows outside the ‘core’ work Hancock did on his eponymous series and those that preceded it. -

April Competition I TOLD YOU I WAS ILL The April competition with Spike Milligan themed grid by Pickles and clued by Enigmatist, was won by Jos Tait of Preston Australia. Excellent solving! SPIKE MILLIGAN Feedback included: Enigmatist is one of my favourite setters and many of the reasons for that can be found in this puzzle: clever and challenging exploitation of an interesting theme; complex, cryptic and misleading clues – for example, it took me a long time to unravel the clue to IRONIC, but it is, as indeed are all his clues, ultimately both intricate and fair. A most enjoyable solve this month. Kmc One solver is speaking to another :- “Would you like to do this puzzle set by Enigmatist or climb the North face of the Eiger?” “Wait right there – I'll get the crampons!” GS Much fun to be had here, as Andre always has a go first. He was amazed when he came to complain that nothing could really contain Y__G T__G and I immediately burst into song... Quite an education in British culture for him! JN Lovely to have the brilliant madcap humour of Spike Milligan celebrated and brought back to life again in such a clever puzzle. 1 Living Beside The Shadow of Death By Grace Lukach It’s hard to say when my Grandpa really began to die. Complications from an elective back surgery in 2001 forced him to spend two hundred non-consecutive days of the next year institutionalized—either in the hospital, nursing home, or in-house rehabilitation center. On three separate occasions he was put on a ventilator and for nearly nineteen of those two hundred days he relied on this machine to live. It seemed as though he were dying, but somehow, after all those months of suffering, he recovered his strength and returned home. He had escaped the clutches of death. And though he never again walked independently and would dream of physical activities as simple as driving, he was able to share monthly meals with old co-workers, attend weekly mass, and watch his children—and their children—grow up for six more years. Because of modern medicine, my Grandpa experienced six more years of being alive. But then my Grandpa fell and broke his hip. Back in the hospital, he was intubated and extubated and intubated again. A permanent pacemaker was implanted as well as a dialysis port, a tracheotomy, and a feeding tube. He was on and off the ventilator. Death was the enemy and everyone was fighting with every bit of energy they could muster, but nothing could keep him alive this time. After four months in the hospital, my Grandpa finally died. My Grandma’s journey to death is much clearer. She was a fighter who had regained full mobility after suffering a debilitating stroke that paralyzed her right side at the age of fifty-four.
