BROOKS WALLACE AWARD WATCH LIST Name School Conference Ben Orloff UC Irvine Big West Bryan Marquez New Mexico St May 13, 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Andrea Watson, (806) 239-0522 or [email protected] SEMIFINALISTS FOR SHORTSTOP AWARD ANNOUNCED LUBBOCK, Texas — The College Baseball Foundation announced today the 15 semifinalists for the 2009 Brooks Wallace Award, which honors the nation’s outstanding shortstop. “We’re very excited to see how these players are excelling as the college baseball regular season wraps up,” said Raymond Richardson, College Baseball Awards Show chairman and CBF Trustee. “These players have set themselves apart and it will be interesting to see them continue into post-season play.” Bryan Marquez, a senior from New Mexico State, leads the list in batting average at .417, with 80 RBIs, 21 home runs and a .962 fielding percentage. Ben Orloff, a senior from UC Irvine, tops the list with a .974 fielding percentage and a .352 batting average. Joining Marquez is another player from the Western Athletic Conference, Kyle Bellows of San Jose State. Bellows is hitting .380 with 48 RBIs, seven home runs and a .968 fielding percentage. The ACC also features two players on the semifinalist list — Derek Dietrich of Georgia Tech and Stephen Cardullo of Florida State. Dietrich, a sophomore, is hitting .345 with 48 RBIs, nine home runs and a .943 fielding percentage. Cardullo has a .369 batting average with 33 RBIs, nine home runs and a .950 fielding percentage. Other conferences with multiple semifinalists include the Big West, the Big 12 and the Ohio Valley. “All of these players are excellent athletes and a hot streak at the end of the season could be what puts any one of them over the top,” Richardson said. “Right now, it’s still anyone’s race.” The CBF, the Dick Howser Committee and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association will — more — announce the recipients of the 2009 college baseball awards as well as the Dick Howser Trophy finalists on June 13 in Omaha, Neb. This will lead in to a great week of college baseball at the 2009 NCAA College World Series. The Brooks Wallace Award officially will be presented on July 2 in Lubbock as part of the College Baseball Awards Show, which will recognize the top players in college baseball as part of the CBF’s annual celebration, which also includes the National College Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. In addition to the Brooks Wallace Award, other awards presented during the show will include the Dick Howser Trophy for the national player of the year, and the National Pitcher of the Year Award. Rutschman, 21, hit .411/.575/.751 (76-for-185) with 10 doubles, 17 home runs, 57 runs, 58 RBI, and 76 walks in 57 games during his junior season. He guided Oregon State to their 20th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. His .575 on-base percentage and 76 walks led all of Division I. The announcement came at a national news conference Saturday morning at TD Ameritrade Stadium as OSU’s first winner of the prestigious award met with a group of national media. He is the first Beavers player honored with the Howser Trophy, which originated in 1987. Rutschman also is the fourth recipient to be the first overall selection in the Major League Baseball free agent draft and capture the award, joining Clemson pitcher Kris Benson (1996), Vanderbilt pitcher David Price (2007) and San Diego State pitcher Steve Strasburg (2008). Rutchsman was selected by the Baltimore Orioles as the opening player in last week’s draft.     LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 48, No. 3, Apr. 17, 2009) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Joe Dier NCBWA Membership: With the 2008-09 hoops season now in the record books, the collegiate spotlight is focusing more closely on the nation’s baseball diamonds. Though we’re heading into the final month of the season, there are still plenty of twists and turns ahead on the road to Omaha and the 2009 NCAA College World Series. The NCAA will soon be announcing details of next month’s tournament selection announcements naming the regional host sites (May 24) and the 64-team tournament field (May 25). To date, four different teams have claimed the top spot in the NCBWA’s national Division I polls --- Arizona State, Georgia, LSU, and North Carolina. Several other teams have graced the No. 1 position in other national polls. The NCAA’s mid-April RPI listing has Cal State Fullerton leading the 301-team pack, with 19 teams sporting 25-win records through games of April 12. For the record, New Mexico State tops the wins list with a 30-6 mark. As the conference races heat up from coast to coast, the NCBWA will begin the process for naming its All- America teams and the Divk Howser Trophy (see below). We will have a form going out to conference offices and Division I independents in coming days. Last year’s NCBWA-selected team included 56 outstanding baseball athletes, and we want to have the names of all deserving players on the table for consideration for this year’s awards.
