Editor Catherine Clouston 07785 987734 Email: [email protected] Advertising: Katherine Kane 853400 Email: [email protected] Letter from the Editor Firstly, please do come to the Annual Parish Meeting of MCC on Wednesday 16th May at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall in Nayland Road. Spring is trying to be in the air which is a huge relief. Our cover for this issue is to celebrate positivity—partly for the summer that will come, and partly the Village Green which is planned for the Mill Road Sports Field. This is in the main part due to the dedication of Cllr John Stewart who has worked hard to see this project through to fruition. His Chairman’s Report is on page 4. What John has not mentioned is that he will be stepping down as Chairman of MCC this month. So, thank you John for all your hard work over the past year, and the good news is that you will still continue to serve as a councillor. We started the New Year with a full complement of seventeen councillors, but now, with one resignation, we have a vacancy if anyone is interested. Thank you to Helen Dryburgh for all her input. The new Community Engagement Committee had its first, very successful, Meet & Greet. More have been arranged (see page 6 for details). They are now planning for the Annual Fete this summer. If you would like to be involved, please get in touch. Patrick Mills has submitted another fascinating article on page 23, taken from the school log of Myland School in 1918. We also have a biography of a well-known local character on page 27. And finally, another goodbye, this time for Nikki Spelling, who, for as long as I have been Editor, has submitted her “From the Waiting Room” feature. She is retiring from the Mill Road Practice. Thank you Nikki, and enjoy your new life. Catherine Clouston Deadlines for next issue: 1st July 2018 (advertising), 7th (other copy) 3 Myland Community Council Reports Residents of Myland will be aware of the major Northern Gateway sporting and leisure project around the stadium area. Myland Community Council has been working with Colchester Borough Planning and the developers to ensure that what is delivered is right for Myland. The North section will be a new Sports Stadium and the relocated Rugby Club on the north side of the A12 adjacent to the Park & Ride. The South section will extend from United Way/Axial Way roundabout to Mill Road. The current users of Mill Road Sports Field will relocate to the new stadium except the cricketers who will relocate to Ford’s Lane Recreation Ground. All this, of course, is subject to planning permission. MCC broadly welcomes this project. I am particularly pleased with the proposed Myland Village Green. Since 2014, when I first instigated this project, I have campaigned for the retention of a good part of the Mill Road Sports Field as a Village Green. I have been supported by Cllr Gerard Oxford (Highwoods) and Cllr Martin Goss (Mile End). The adopted Myland & Braiswick Neighbourhood Plan reflects this guarantee of a minimum of 4.5 hectares (about 12 acres) set aside for our Village Green. The Village Green will integrate with the rest of the South section: exactly how is being planned. The addition of the Village Green open space at Myland’s eastern boundary and the improvements planned

  • Old Heath Parish and Community Magazine July 2019 50P
Old Heath Parish and Community Magazine July 2019 50p The Household Cavalry, a premiere regiment of the Royal Guard. Read more inside. Household Cavalry In a previous magazine we highlighted the splendour of our Guards Regiments and their different uniforms. This month we explain the Household Cavalry. Often called the Blues and Royals and the Life Guards. So what is the Household Cavalry? The Household Cavalry is formed by the British Army’s two most senior regiments: The Life Guards and The Blues & Royals. It has an Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment, the Household Cavalry Regiment (HCR) in Windsor, and for ceremonial duties the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (HCMR) in London. Today’s Household Cavalry and its four antecedent regiments (The 1st and 2nd Life Guards, and The Royal Horse Guards (The Blues) and the 1st (Royal) Dragoons) have fought in all of the British Army’s major campaigns since 1660. 1660: Just before the Restoration of King Charles II, a Royal Mounted Bodyguard is formed in Holland from 80 Royalists who had gone into exile with the King after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. After the restoration in 1660, The Life Guards are officially recognised as the unit to provide his personal escort and guard at his Whitehall Palace. 1813 The Royal Horse Guards are especially favoured by King George III and, with the appointment of the Duke of Wellington as Colonel, are elevated to the status of Household Cavalry in recognition of their distinguished service. They now commence Sovereign’s escort and guard duties with The Life Guards. 1815 The Life Guards, Royal Horse Guards and Royal Dragoons all distinguish themselves at the Battle of Waterloo.
