NEW DESIGN CELEBRATING INDIVIDUALITY SPRING/SUMMER 2010: COOPERATIVE DESIGNS MARK FAST AVSH ALOM GUR ALEXANDRA GROOVER GEORGIA HARDINGE DAVID KOMA HANNAH MARSHALL WILLIAM TEMPEST ALL WALKS BEYOND THE CATWALK IS A NEW INITIATIVE WHICH RECOGNIZES A SHIFT IN MOOD AND ATTITUDE WITHIN FASHION – A NEED TO BROADEN THE MESSAGE OUR INDUSTRY SENDS OUT TO THE REST OF THE WORLD THE FASHION INDUSTRY is a powerful communicator of ideas about beauty and body image, particularly to women. All Walks Beyond the Catwalk, a project estab- lished in May 2009 by Caryn Franklin, Debra Bourne, Erin O’Connor and Susan Ringwood, facilitates a con- versation around these issues. –– Endorsed by the British Fashion Council and inspired –– As London Fashion Week celebrates its 25th anni- by the charity BEAT, All Walks Beyond the Catwalk versary, we look back to its origins. This first Late Shift Tour is led by fashion insiders and co-founders of All Walks Beyond the Catwalk - Erin O’Connor, Debra Bourne and Caryn Franklin. They offer their reflections on women and representations of beauty. All Walks Beyond the Catwalk celebrate and encourage greater diversity in the fashion industry. Their thoughts on a selection of portraits of women in the Collection are presented here to guide you around the Gallery. They have recently worked with fashion photographer Rankin to create a more diverse portrait of the Spring/Summer 2011 catwalk designer collections on a wider range of models. -

Over 50 and doing what? Reflections on being a mature model ©Alessandra Bruni Lopez y Royo 2014 This is a revised version of the paper originally presented at the International Women, Ageing and Media Research Summer School, 23-24 July 2013 Introduction In the past five to six years we have witnessed greater awareness of the presence of older models, often descriBed as ‘mature’ models, in Both fashion and advertising, as part of a broader discourse of diversity 1. The media have discussed the phenomenon intermittently But the older model has not yet Begun to receive the attention of academics, particularly those involved in research related to ageing 2. She is seen, but not noticed. A recent international conference in London held at the London College of Fashion, exploring issues of ageing in fashion and Beauty, saw older supermodels and media personalities ruB shoulders with academics, taking on the role of speakers 3. Enabling that particular mix was a smart decision on the part of the conference organizers: ageing and the ageing model, as a result, Became a ‘hot topic’ in the aftermath of the conference, with Blog posts and magazine/newspaper articles ranging from the likes of - here I am parodying - “I was there too” and “Did she not look radiant?” to more content –rich accounts of the discussions that took place over the two days, altogether bringing further exposure to a growing research area, that of ageing studies. The ‘older model’ is a particularly refractory topic of discussion. Until now when models have come under academic scrutiny it has Been with reference almost exclusively to fashion modeling, using it as a case study to improve literatures on gender, sexuality, culture, and fashion marketing. -
