A's News Clips, Wednesday, June 23, 2010 Coco Crisp Provides Sole
A’s News Clips, Wednesday, June 23, 2010 Coco Crisp provides sole highlight as faltering A's lose to Cincinnati Reds By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune A's manager Bob Geren provided a surprise with his lineup Tuesday night, even as the scoreboard told the same tired story for his team. Center fielder Coco Crisp was activated from the disabled list and connected for a two-run home run that provided the A's only offense in a 4-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. That was the extent of the highlights, as Dallas Braden (4-7) lost his fifth straight decision and Oakland dropped even further back in the American League West standings. The A's trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth but put runners on the corners with one out against Reds closer Francisco Cordero. But Ryan Sweeney grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end it. There's little optimism surrounding the A's these days, but Crisp's presence atop the batting order was a lift considering he'd missed all but two games this season. Crisp was six games into a rehab stint with Triple-A Sacramento that was supposed to last 10 days. Even as Crisp was tearing up Pacific Coast League pitching, Geren maintained the A's would stick to their schedule for him, just to make sure the oft-injured outfielder was recovered from a strained rib-cage muscle. That plan went out the window. "I was hoping to be up here earlier because I felt good," Crisp said before the game. -

TEXAS RANGERS CLIPS – August 4, 2013
TEXAS RANGERS CLIPS – August 4, 2013 TEXASRANGERS.COM Garza's complete game for naught after early runs A's use small ball as Parker, bullpen keep Rangers' bats quiet By T.R. Sullivan / MLB.com | 8/3/2013 8:52 PM ET OAKLAND -- Rangers starter Matt Garza pitched his first complete game in his last 33 starts Saturday afternoon. It was also just the second complete game by a Rangers pitcher this season. But Garza also gave up first-inning runs for the first time this season and his complete game came in a losing effort. The A's scored three runs in the first and held on for a 4-2 victory against the Rangers at O.co Coliseum. "They had a big first inning," said Garza, who lost for the first time since June 11. "It's always tough to put your guys in a hole like that. I was able to keep the bullpen down, get deep in the game and give guys a rest, but I didn't do my job." Jarrod Parker and three Oakland relievers did, holding the Rangers to two runs on seven hits. They also combined to retire 14 of the last 15 hitters they faced. The Rangers had some chances early, but went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. "We didn't expect to win every game the rest of the year," outfielder David Murphy said. "We played well today and both pitchers threw well, but they did a good job of getting an early lead." The loss snapped the Rangers' five-game winning streak, while the Athletics brought a three-game losing streak to an end -- their longest since a five-game skid in early May. -

Brandon Erbe's time with the Orioles may be nearing an end. The 23-year-old will be eligible for free agency if he's not added back to the 40-man roster between now and early November. Baltimore born and bred, Erbe signed out of third round of the ’05 draft and put Class A ball behind him by the end of the ’08 season. However, he's pitched just 165 innings in the past three seasons (including 4 2/3 this year), and he's coming off labrum surgery in ’10. -
A's News Clips, Wednesday, September 1, 2010 New York Yankees
A’s News Clips, Wednesday, September 1, 2010 New York Yankees make quick work of Oakland A's starter Vin Mazzaro in 9-3 humbling By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune Not long ago, work was tough to come by for A's relievers. The bullpen is cranking back to life now, and that's bad news for the A's. The A's took another Bronx bashing Tuesday night, this one a 9-3 defeat to the New York Yankees that provided plenty for a crowd of 44,575 to cheer about. The A's starting rotation has played the starring role in so much that's gone right for Oakland this season. However, it's been cameo appearances the past two nights at Yankee Stadium. Right-hander Vin Mazzaro (6-7) served up three home runs and was charged with nine runs (seven earned) in just 32/3 innings. He also allowed seven hits, walked three and hit a batter. "Three walks, a hit-by-pitch. He gave up three homers," manager Bob Geren said. "It was not a good night for him." The starters recently rattled off 24 consecutive outings of six innings or more, one off the Oakland record. But they have failed to complete five innings in three of the past five games, and the A's have lost all three. Over the past two games, Mazzaro and Trevor Cahill have combined to give up 15 earned runs and 16 hits (five homers) in just 72/3 innings. Not that it's unheard of for good pitchers to struggle against the Yankees' power-packed lineup. -

Baseball Icon Babe Ruth Y------Z
Y--------------------------------- ------------------------------------Z Babe Ruth League Bids Farewell to Our Dear Friend, Julia Ruth Stevens, Loving Daughter of Baseball Icon Babe Ruth Y-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Z It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Julia Ruth Stevens, who passed away early in the morning of March 9, 2019, after a short illness. Julia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who lived a wonderful, full life during the 102 years that she was with us. Julia, who was considered baseball royalty, was the last person who knew the Babe firsthand. Reflecting on their relationship beyond the ball field, she would always tell you she loved him and couldn’t have had a better father. Until the very end, she was proud to call the Babe “Daddy.” Born into a typical southern family on July 17, 1916, in Athens, Georgia, Julia’s earliest days were spent with her mother, grandmother and two uncles. Her biological father had passed away shortly after Julia was born. In 1918, her mother, Claire, left the comfort of her Athens home along with her toddling baby and headed off to New York City. There, she eventually met and married the legendary Babe Ruth. Julia was the older of two daughters adopted by Ruth. Dorothy Helen Ruth Pirone, who passed away in 1989, was adopted by Babe Ruth and his first wife, Helen. Julia embraced the moments she shared with the Babe. She was always pleased to share stories with eager fans and journalists alike. The opportunity to travel the world with Babe Ruth and her mother was one of Julia’s fondest memories of the sports icon.
