  • 1.1 Employment Sectors
1.1 EMPLOYMENT SECTORS To realise the economic potential of the Gateway and identified strategic employment centres, the RPGs indicates that sectoral strengths need be developed and promoted. In this regard, a number of thematic development areas have been identified, the core of which are pivoted around the main growth settlements. Food, Tourism, Services, Manufacturing and Agriculture appear as the primary sectors being proffered for Meath noting that Life Sciences, ICT and Services are proffered along the M4 corridor to the south and Aviation and Logistics to the M1 Corridor to the east. However, Ireland’s top 2 exports in 2010, medical and pharmaceutical products and organic chemicals, accounted for 59% of merchandise exports by commodity group. It is considered, for example, that Navan should be promoted for medical products noting the success of Welch Allyn in particular. An analysis has been carried out by the Planning Department which examined the individual employment sectors which are presently in the county and identified certain sectoral convergences (Appendix A). This basis of this analysis was the 2011 commercial rates levied against individual premises (top 120 rated commercial premises). The analysis excluded hotels, retail, public utilities public administration (Meath County Council, OPW Trim and other decentralized Government Departments) along with the HSE NE, which includes Navan Hospital. The findings of this analysis were as follows: • Financial Services – Navan & Drogheda (essentially IDA Business Parks & Southgate Centre). • Industrial Offices / Call Centres / Headquarters – Navan, Bracetown (Clonee) & Duleek. • Food and Meath Processing – Navan, Clonee and various rural locations throughout county. • Manufacturing – Oldcastle and Kells would have a particular concentrations noting that a number of those with addresses in Oldcastle are in the surrounding rural area.

Indeed its siting is possibly determined by it being a fording point on this river, which is a major tributary of the Boyne. The area map of the Boyne and Liffey catchment area (Fig. 1) suggests that all major towns in Meath are associated with their local river system. Trim and Navan both retain medieval stone bridges. O'Keefe and Simington quote the Statute Rolls of Henry VI c.1463 which states that 'divers customs to be levied on the towne of Trim, Naas, Navan, Athboy, Kells and Fore and in the franchises of said towns for the murage, pavage and repair of bridges of the said towns are greatly strengthened', suggesting that there was a bridge in Athboy at that time1 Athboy lies at Figure 1 The Boyne catchment showing the main tributaries and the western end of important towns.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY The primary schools cross country competition took place on Wednesday the 14th March in Navan Adventure Sports Centre @ 11am. This was the second year we used the Adventure Sports Centre as a venue and it proved a good choice. Given the aftermath of the Beast from the East and storm Emma the course was relatively dry and in good condition for the competition. The weather wasn’t cooperating but that didn’t stop the 900 children and 22 primary schools who came to compete. Our thanks goes to Darren and the crew at Navan Adventure Sports Centre for the use of their grounds also to all those from various Meath athletics clubs who helped with erecting and taking down the course and the running of the event. • NAVAN FORT English Translation
NAVAN FORT English Translation NAVAN FORT Emain Macha County Armagh The Site Navan Fort is a large circular earthwork enclosure 2 miles W. of Armagh city. It stands on a hill of glacial clay over limestone, and though from a distance this hill is not very prominent, from the top the view on a clear day is impressive. To the NW. are the Sperrins; Slieve Gallion is to the N. and Slemish to NE., while to the S. are the uplands of mid Armagh. Clearly visible to the E. is Armagh city with its two hilltop cathedrals. Only to the W. is the view less extensive. The small lake called Loughnashade is close to the NE. of the fort, and the road which runs S. of the earthwork was probably already old when it was shown on a map made in 1602. Navan in Legend and History Navan can be firmly identified with Emain Macha, ancient capital of the kings of Ulster. In leg- end Macha was a princess or goddess, and one explanation for the name Emain Macha (twins of Macha) was that she gave birth to twins after winning a race against the king’s fastest chariot. Another story was that she traced the outline of the earthwork with the pin of her brooch. The important body of Early Irish legend known as the Ulster Cycle centres round King Concho- bor, who ruled his kingdom from Emain Macha. Here were great halls for feasting, for weapons and for the spoils of war, and here was the king’s warrior troop, the Red Branch Knights.

INTRODUCTION The Hill of Tara emerges around the beginning of the 7th century AD, depicted in historical sources as the pre-eminent prehistoric sanctuary of kingship in Ireland, its kings claiming na- tional authority. This elevated status was strengthened by four thousand years of continuous use of the hill as a ceremonial complex which consisted of a necropolis, a sanctuary and a temple complex. This manifold use is evident in the archaeological record. Tara is traditionally, central to the story of St. Patrick’s conversion of the Irish to Christianity and is the setting for most of the important early Irish sagas. The hill became the touchstone of the Irish political and cultural nationalist movements of 19th and 20th century, its integrity acclaimed and de- fended by leading figures in the formation of the Irish nation. This position was most vocifer- ously expressed during the campaign waged against the British-Israelites’ explorations for the Ark of the Covenant. Tara’s uniquely important position and its potential to yield information about Irish culture and history, was acknowledged by an Taoiseach Eamon de Valera who turned the first sod of Professor Séan P. Ó Ríordáin’s 1953 excavation campaign. Following Ó Ríordáin’s untimely death, his campaign was brought to a successful conclusion by the Taoiseach’s son, Professor Ruaidhrí de Valera. This historical association was transferred to a third generation of this modern political dynasty when Minister Síle de Valera turned the first sod on the Discovery Programme’s excavations in 1997.
