They provide a unique opportunity to create community and feel connected to others who are in similar life situations. The blackboard space here at the Museum of Motherhood is a more intimate and immediate setting for community building. It is a dynamic space to express your opinions. Each week a new question or quote was posted. Mothers were invited to respond however they felt moved to do so. The intention of this project was to re-invigorate a space that was in the original plan and vision for the museum – a space for mothers to connect with one another and build community. In a culture where sharing online is the norm, would mothers and caretakers feel comfortable to share their thoughts and opinions in a more intimate setting? Chasity Bailey-Fakhoury, PhD, teaches graduate and undergraduate stu- dents in the College of Education at Grand Valley State University.     Andrea O’Reilly – Motherhood Hall of Fame Keynote (2014) This text is taken from Andrea O'Reilly's keynote speech and induction into the Motherhood Hall of Fame at the Museum of Motherhood in NYC (2014) Over the last forty years, as feminist theory and women’s studies have grown and developed as a scholarly field, they have incorporated various and diverse theoretical models to represent the specific perspectives/concerns of particular groups of women; global feminism, queer feminism, third wave feminism and womanism. In contrast, I will argue that women’s studies has not likewise recognized or embraced a feminism developed from the specific needs/concerns of mothers, what I have termed matricentric feminism. The paper will consider possible reasons for the exclusion of matricentric feminism in feminist theory and why this school of feminism must be accorded the same legitimacy and autonomy as other feminist theoretical models in the discipline of women’s studies. The title of this paper paraphrases two central and significant quotes from Feminist Theory. One from Sojourner Truth’s speech at an abolitionist meeting: "That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Engelmajer* “Like a Mother Her Only Child”: Mothering in the Pāli Canon https://doi.org/10.1515/opth-2020-0009 Received October 08, 2019; accepted December 27, 2019 Abstract: This paper examines mothers and mothering in the Pāli canon and commentaries and contends that a mothering path emerges when the deeply patriarchal traditional hierarchy of values is challenged and, following Karen Derris, the unthoughts related to mothers and mothering, which this hierarchy of values generates, are also challenged. The article focuses on three main female characters, Māyā, Mahāpajāpatī, and Visākhā, whose paths as mothers or as lay followers of the Buddha who “stand in the position of a mother” constitute a deliberate soteriological path in the Pali Buddhist texts. It draws on contemporary Buddhist Studies feminist scholarship (in particular, the work of Karen Derris (2014) and Liz Wilson (2013)) as well as motherhood studies (in particular, Sara Ruddick’s (1989) work based on Adrienne Rich’s (1976) foundational distinction between motherhood as a patriarchal institution that oppresses women and mothering as women’s lived experience to outline how mothering activities in the Pāli canon can be discerned as a soteriological path that follows the same trajectory as the Buddha’s Bodhisatta path that begins with making a solemn vow (patthanā) and ends with awakening (nibbāna). I conclude that adopting this approach allows us to reenvisage activities and relationships usually understood as “this- worldly” in the canonical and commentarial Pāli texts, and in contemporary feminist scholarship, as the embodiment of a soteriology based on interdependence and compassionate care for others.

Mother Studies is a field of interdisciplinary study devoted to the issues, experiences, topics, history, and culture of mothers, mothering, and motherhood. Some proposed concepts include maternal health and well- being, reproductive justice, maternal justice, and mediating motherhood in popular culture. How do we facilitate the growth of this emerging field? How should classes, exhibitions, and mother-made media be shared? How do we teach mother studies, across domains, forums and mediums? How can mother and/or father studies be introduced in more systematic ways, both culturally and within classrooms? If you are already teaching or researching motherhood or mothering studies, sociology of family, anthropology or psychology or making mother art, how do you approach the work? Please share. This is your forum. We welcome submissions from scholars, students, activists, artists, community agencies, service providers, journalists, mothers and others who work or research in this area. Cross-cultural, historical, and comparative work is encouraged. We also encourage a variety of types of submissions, including individual academic papers from all disciplines.
