Friedrich Engels’s Life Friedrich Engels was born on 28 November 1820 in Barmen, a city in North Rhine- Westphalia, Germany, that has since 1929 formed a district of the city Wuppertal. In the early 19th century, Barmen was one of the most important manufacturing centres in the German-speaking world. He was the child of Elisabeth Franziska Mauritia Engels (1797-1873) and Friedrich Engels senior (1796-1860). The Engels family was part of the capitalist class and operated a business in the cotton manufacturing industry, which was one of the most important industries. In 1837, Engels senior created a business partnership with Peter Ermen called Ermen & Engels. The company operated cotton mills in Manchester (Great Britain) and Engelskirchen (Germany). Other than Marx, Engels did not attend university because his father wanted him to join the family business so that Engels junior already at the age of 16 started an ap- prenticeship in commerce. -

1 WALKER THROUGH THE BROOK OF FIRE: MARX’S CONCEPT OF SPECIES- BEING AND HIS BREAK WITH FEUERBACH Grayson Shade Walker Supervised by Dr. Gabriel Gottlieb 30 April 2021 2 WALKER 1 | INTRODUCTION Once upon a time a valiant fellow had the idea that men were drowned in water only because they were possessed with the idea of gravity. If they were to knock this notion out of their heads, say by stating it to be a superstition, a religious concept, they would be sublimely proof against any danger from water. His whole life long he fought against the illusion of gravity, of whose harmful results all statistic brought him new and manifold evidence. This valiant fellow was the type of the new revolutionary philosophers in Germany.1 -- Karl Marx The task of this paper is to re-visit a concept that has long escaped proper clarification: Gattungswesen, or species-being. Many scholars have often assumed that the concept has no bearing on Marx’s later developments, or that it invariably bears the baggage of idealistic humanism not yet shorn by the younger Marx.2 While there may be traces of an incipient idealism in the early Marx—a product of his own post-Hegelian milieu—this paper will show how Marx inherits Feuerbach’s concept of species-being and, by overcoming its limitations, arrives at a new concept of humanity. I will show how Feuerbach fails to materialistically inverse Hegel, and how this failure leads him to a concept of man that is ultimately ahistorical—as it fixes a human essence beyond human history—and is idealist, to the extent that it begins from abstractions from the world. -

This paper examines two areas where the MEGA 2 project can advance the understanding of Marx’s thought; although the contribution of MEGA 2 to each is very different, the areas are linked by their subject matter — Marx’s engagement with the mathematical sciences — and by other personalities involved. In the first part of the paper we deal with the question of Marx’s mathematical manuscripts, the majority of which are apparently already available and translated into several languages, but awaiting their definitive publication in their place in the MEGA. In the second part we deal with Marx’s contact with nineteenth-century thought in probability and statistics, a story whose full elucidation cannot be undertaken until more volumes of his Notebooks are available, and especially that which is known to contain his notes on Quetelet. -

Formerly known as Herr Eugen Dühring's Revolution in Science, Engels’ Anti-Dühring is a popular and enduring work which, as Engels wrote to Marx, was an attempt “to produce an encyclopaedic survey of our conception of the philosophical, natural-science and historical problems.” Marx and Engels first became aware of Professor Dühring with his December 1867 review of Capital, published in Ergänzungsblätter. They exchanged a series of letters about him from January-March 1868. He was largely forgotten until the mid-1870s, at which time Dühring entered Germany's political foreground. German Social-Democrats were influenced by both his Kritische Geschichte der Nationalökonomie und des Sozialismus and Cursus der Philosophie als streng wissenschaftlicher Weltanschauung und Lebensgestaltung. Among his readers were included Johann Most, Friedrich Wilhelm Fritzsche, Eduard Bernstein – and even August Bebel for a brief period. In March 1874, the Social-Democratic Workers’ Party paper Volksstaat ran an anonymous article (actually penned by Bebel) favorably reviewing one of Dühring's books. On both February 1 and April 21, 1875, Liebknecht encouraged Engels to take Dühring head-on in the pages of the Volksstaat. In February 1876, Engels fired an opening salvo with his Volksstaat article “Prussian Vodka in the German Reichstag”. -

The German Ideology ................................................................. The German Ideology is essentially a critique of German philosophical idealism through which Marx and Engels develop their own conceptual framework of historical materialism. ................................................................. What do Marx and Engels set out to do? The German Ideology divides into three parts. The first part is essentially a critique of German philosophical idealism through which Marx and Engels refine and develop their conceptual framework “or way of understanding the world”, the seeds of which had been sewn in earlier works. In the preface to the German Ideology Marx and Engels state: ‘The first volume of the present publication has the aim of uncloaking these sheep [Young- Hegelians].... It is its aim to debunk and discredit the philosophic struggle with the shadows of reality which appeals to the dreamy and muddled German nation.’ Marx and Engels’ aims are therefore to show that German philosophical idealism bears no resemblance to the ‘real’ conditions of people’s existence and so argue that the solutions advocated on the basis of such philosophy are useless. Through their critique of idealism they clarify their own conceptual framework of historical materialism which in turn reveals their epistemological basis and their methodology. The result is an analysis of the world that offers the possibility of people changing their conditions of existence through practice. Any interpretation or understanding of the world which does not offer the possibility of humans actively altering their material conditions is seen, by Marx and Engels, as sterile and achieves no purpose. In the German Ideology, Marx and Engels also critique and distance themselves from mechanical determinism, positivism and empiricism which, they argue, results in an incomplete analysis of the social world and can be seen to form the epistemological foundations of the varieties of socialism and communism of some of their contemporaries. -

Marx and the Foundations of the Critical Theory of Morality and Ethics Ricardo Brown Epicurus Understanding the Question of Ethics in Marx 1. How are we to understand the ethical content of Marx's work? Is there a socialist ethic or an ethic of socialism? Of course, these are not new questions within the marxist tradition. One hundred years ago, debates over "ethical socialism" coincided with those over accumulation, imperialism, organization and party. Although the question of ethics has been raised most recently by neo-liberal and neo-authoritarian critics, the turn to the question of ethics has not occurred for intellectual reasons. It is occasioned by the passing of state capitalism in the USSR and by the simultaneous critique of the adaptation by the Left of the discursive categories of bourgeois science in the forms of scientific socialism and the science of historical materialism. However, to raise the question of ethics is one thing, but to uncover its location within critical theory is quite another. Broadly speaking, responses to the question of ethics have displayed two theoretical tendencies. In the first tendency, there is a moralization of Marx through the construction of the "young Marx." New Marx Publications: a MEGA Update the Ongoing Marx-Engels
New Marx Publications: A MEGA Update KEVIN B. ANDERSON The ongoing Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe (Complete Writings, or MEGA) certainly shows that the serious scholarly publication of Marx’s work is continuing. Perhaps more importantly, it also suggests that there may still be some significant parts of Marx’s work that have yet to see the light of day. Some indications of this came in December 1998, when the first post-Stalinist volume of the MEGA came off the press at Akademie Verlag in Berlin. The last volume had appeared in 1992, just after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Anumber of leading newspapers and magazines, espe- cially German ones, reported the December 1998 publication of the new MEGA vol- ume. Articles appeared in German in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , the Frankfurter Rundschau, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and Die Zeit. Outside Germany, Le Soir (Belgium), Pravda (Russia), and the Asahi Shimbun (Japan) also covered the story, but it unfortu- nately received little attention in the English-speaking world. Since then, two more volumes have appeared, both in 1999, with two more scheduled to appear soon. MEGA Volume IV/3, the one published in December 1998, offers new background on Marx’s development during the period between the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts (1844) and the German Ideology (1846) as well as the Communist Manifesto (1848). Volume IV/3 contains Marx’s 400-page 1844–7 notebooks on leading political economists of the time such as Louis Say, Jean Charles Leonard Sismondi, Charles Babbage, Andrew Ure, and Nassau Senior. None of these texts has been previously published in any language. -

25 Years of Marxist-Humanism in the U.S. Raya Dunayevskaya Prologue: New stage of production, New stage of cognition, New kind of organization Ever since I began preparing for the celebration of May 5 as the birth-time of history - Marx's new continent of thought - I have been rethinking the birth of Marxist-Humanism in the U.S. There was no way to sum up 25 years of the birth and development of the News and Letters Committees as well as News & Letters as paper, without taking account of the philosophic breakthrough on the Absolute Idea as containing a movement from practice as well as from theory. That occurred in 1953. Once the split in the State- Capitalist Tendency, known as Johnson-Forest,1 was complete in 1955, our very first publication reproduced my May 12-20, 1953 Letters on the Absolute Idea along with the first English translation of Lenin's Philosophic Notebooks. In a word, while 1955 saw the birth of News and Letters, both as Committees and as our paper, 1953 saw at one and the same time, the emergence, in the Johnson-Forest Tendency, of open divergencies towards objective events (be it Stalin's death, the East German revolt, the Beria purge, or McCarthyism), as well as towards the subjective idea of what type of paper Correspondence was to be and what was its relationship to Marxism. * * * In reaching back to 1953, a new illumination disclosed that we were really talking, not about a, single year, but about the period 1949- 1954. After all, nothing short of the Second Industrial Revolution had emerged with the introduction of Automation in the mines. -

Two years later, Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, a well known representative of the Austrian school of marginalism, published the first comprehensive critique based on all three volumes of Capital. In December 2004, exactly 110 years after Engels’s edition of Capital’s third volume appeared, the same text was published as Volume 15 of the second section of the complete works of Marx and Engels (MEGA). Th is second section contains Capital and the works preparatory to Capital in chronological order. Numerically and chronologically, Volume 15 is the last one of this section.1 Because some earlier volumes are still unpublished, readers have still to wait some time until the second section will be actually complete. For a further critique of Marx, readers of this MEGA volume will not have to wait so long: radically breaking with the new 1993 editorial guidelines of the MEGA, this volume contains a strongly slanted ‘introduction’, written by Bertram Schefold, a neo-Ricardian economist, presenting a devastating critique of Marx as if it were an undisputed judgement of contemporary economic science. -

Friedrich Engels at 200 Friedrich Engels was born 200 years ago today. His writings continue to inform the struggles and inspire the hopes that define our own crisis-ridden age. John Bellamy Foster Tribune, Summer 2020 Few political and intellectual partnerships can rival that of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. They not only famously coauthored The Communist Manifesto in 1848, both taking part in the social revolutions of that year, but also two earlier works — The Holy Family in 1845 and The German Ideology in 1846. In the late 1870s, when the two scientific socialists were finally able to live in close proximity and to confer with each other every day, they would often pace up and down in Marx’s study, each on their own side of the room, boring grooves in the floor as they turned on their heels, while discussing their various ideas, plans, and projects. They frequently read to each other passages from their works in progress. Engels read the entire manuscript of his Anti-Dühring (to which Marx contributed a chapter) to Marx before its publication. Marx wrote an introduction to Engels’s Socialism: Utopian and Scientific. After Marx’s death in 1883, Engels prepared volumes two and three of Capital for publication from the drafts his friend had left behind. If Engels, as he was the first to admit, stood in Marx’s shadow, he was nevertheless an intellectual and political giant in his own right. 6 Marx’s Grundrisse and the ecological contradictions of capitalism John Bellamy Foster Introduction In The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte Marx famously wrote: ‘Men make their own history, but they do not make it just as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circum- stances directly encountered, given and transmitted from the past’ (Marx 1979: 103). The material circumstances or conditions that he was referring to here were the product of both natural and social history. For Marx production was a realm of expanding needs and powers. But it was subject at all times to material limits imposed by nature. It was the tragedy of capital that its narrow logic propelled it in an unrelenting assault on both these natural limits and the new social needs that it brought into being. By constantly revolutionizing production capital transformed society, but only by continually alienating natural necessity (conditions of sustainability and reproduction) and human needs. Recent research has revealed that an ecological–materialist critique was embedded in all of Marx’s work from The Economic and Philosophical Manu- scripts of 1844 to his Ethnological Notebooks of the late 1870s to early 1880s (see Burkett 1999; Foster 2000; Dickens 2004). This can be seen in his material- ist conception of nature and history, his theory of alienation (which encom- passed the alienation of nature), his understanding of the labour and production process as the metabolic relation between humanity and nature, and his co- evolutionary approach to society–nature relations. Nevertheless, because Marx’s overall critique of political economy remained unfinished, these and other aspects of his larger materialist conception of nature and history were incompletely developed – even in those works, such as Capital, volume 1, published in his lifetime. -
