Abstract This project explores the attitudes of universities and media organisations towards journalism curriculum renewal. In part, the project is inspired by an apparent schism that exists between some journalists and editors on the one hand, and journalism academics on the other regarding the role of journalism training and education, specifically, where it should most appropriately be taught – in-house, that is by the media organisation, within a university environment, or elsewhere. This project provides the first comprehensive

  • Submission on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Commitment to Reflecting and Representing Regional Diversity
Submission on The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's commitment to reflecting and representing regional diversity Dear Sir/ Madam, I welcome this opportunity to comment on The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's commitment to reflecting and representing regional diversity within the terms of reference as set out by the Environment and Communications References Committee. Regional diversity and national identity will be diminished with the loss of the ABC Tasmanian Production Unit. Programs of high quality reflecting and representing regional diversity have been produced in Tasmania and include Auction Room, the extremely popular “Collectors” and “Gardening Australia” when it was hosted by Peter Cundall. These Tasmanian programs enabled national viewers to enjoy and appreciate the state’s distinctive heritage and culture. The Tasmanian bushfires were best reported by local journalists who have a personal understanding of the state; its people and conditions. The decision to cut ABC production in Hobart has met with opposition from 12 Federal Senators and the Premier, Lara Giddings who is unable to match funding from the State budget for Screen Tasmania to offset ABC cuts as requested by the ABC’s Managing Director (ABC, 2012)1. Similarly, Western Australia also has limited ABC production with the cessation of “Can We Help?” enjoyed by viewers over six years. The decline, according to Cassellas (2012), has been evident since 1985 when WA had a low but reasonable 7.8 per cent of ABC’s staff compared with just 5.4 per cent in 20122. Now the WA studio is mainly unused or hired out to companies like Screen West. By comparison, NSW had 49.2 per cent of the ABC’s staff last year.

  • 2020–21 Commencement Program
Commencement UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER MAY 6, 2021 One Hundred Forty-Fifth Year of the University NORLIN CHARGE TO THE GRADUATES The first commencement at the University of Colorado was held for six graduates on June 8, 1882, in the chapel of Old Main. It was not until 40 years later, on September 4, 1922, that the first summer commencement was held. Since the first commencement in 1882, the University of Colorado Boulder has awarded more than 350,000 degrees. The traditional Norlin Charge to the graduates was first read by President George Norlin to the June 1935 graduating class. You are now certified to the world at large as alumni of the university. She is your kindly mother and you her cherished sons and daughters. This exercise denotes not your severance from her, but your union with her. Commencement does not mean, as many wrongly think, the breaking of ties and the beginning of life apart. Rather it marks your initiation in the fullest sense into the fellowship of the university, as bearers of her torch, as centers of her influence, as promoters of her spirit. The university is not the campus, not the buildings on campus, not the faculties, not the students of any one time—not one of these or all of them. The university consists of all who come into and go forth from her halls, who are touched by her influence, and who carry on her spirit. Wherever you go, the university goes with you. Wherever you are at work, there is the university at work.

For immediate release Thursday 24 September 2009 The Buck stops with ABC Local Radio ABC Local Radio NSW is delighted to announce that triple J Breakfast presenter and ABC personality Robbie Buck will be the new host of the NSW Evenings program - heard across regional Local Radio NSW, 702 ABC Sydney and 666 ABC Canberra. Robbie starts in January 2010 and brings with him over 20 years of experience in the radio industry, a love for Australian music, plus natural skills as an entertainer. “As the Evening Show is heard throughout NSW and the ACT, I'm especially excited that Robbie has a very strong connection to regional NSW, having spent much of his early life in Lismore, and appeared on radio there from a very young age. ” said James O’Brien ABC Local Radio Manager NSW. “In common with Adam Spencer, Simon Marnie, Angela Catterns and many others who have made the transition from triple j to 'grown up radio' I think the appointment demonstrates the significant role the ABC plays in developing both on-air and off-air talent.” Robbie is a highly valued team member of triple j, hosting the popular Breakfast program with The Doctor and Marieke since early 2008. He has hosted Lunch, Drive and Weekend shifts while working with the national youth network for the last 11 years. Robbie was central to the launch and growth of Home and Hosed – an Australian music program including national tours and album compilations giving new Australian performers an industry break and exposure. Robbie also has the unique distinction of having hosted the Hottest 100 of All Time in 1998 and 2009.

To access the videos in the exercises, please enter the password abj2013 Chapter 1: Radio in Australia The radio services that we have in Australia are very much a product of their early- twentieth-century origins. As you will have read in Chapter 1 of Australian Broadcast Journalism, the three sectors we have today—commercial, community and public broadcasting—each have a distinct style and brief in relation to how they try to appeal to their audiences. You can hear this just by tuning into different stations and listening for yourself. Exercise 1: Listening to a range of programs The best way to learn about radio is to be a listener! Record a commercial program, a community program and an ABC program. 1 Compare their content and presentation styles. 2 What do the programs tell you about their respective audiences? 3 How do they reflect their respective briefs as commercial, community and public broadcasting services? Exercise 2: Podcasting Far from being dead, radio offers a wealth of creative opportunities in the digital age. In September 2013, Radio National’s Common Knowledge program aired a conversation with two innovators in the area of podcasting as part of a ‘radio beyond radio’ conference. Presenters Cassie McCullagh and Jason Di Rosso talked with Silvain Gire, Director and co-founder of Arte Radio, and Francesca Panetta, Special Projects Editor at The Guardian and creator of The Hackney Podcast.
