ANNUAL REPORT Sunshine Kids So, Somuch.” Experience 2011 ANNUAL REPORT “I had an amazing time and it was an unbelievable experience. I LOVE YOU ALL for it. Thank you so, so, so much.” --Sunshine Kid Sunshine Kids Mission: The Sunshine Kids Foundation adds quality of life to children with cancer by providing them with exciting, positive group activities, so they may once again do what Kids are meant to do . have fun and celebrate life! Goal: We look forward to the day when The Sunshine Kids Foundation will no longer need to exist. Until that time, the entire Sunshine Kids family is dedicated to providing the most exciting activities, trips and events for as many young cancer patients as possible. 2011 Annual Report A Message from our Board Chairperson Dear Sunshine Kids Supporters, Thank you for being a part of our family! Each year, across North America, approximately 12,600 children are diagnosed with a childhood cancer. For many of them, the road to conquering this disease is one that is riddled with fear, loneliness and sadness. And for some, there is no recovery. For 29 years, The Sunshine Kids Foundation has been committed to improving the quality of life of children with cancer. Through hundreds of local and national activities, the Foundation has helped these very special children enjoy life again. In 2011, because of our generous donors and volunteers, the Foundation has continued to bring “sunshine” into the lives of children with cancer. This year’s activities provided for the Kids included the thrill of zip lining and the freezing fun of snow tubing. They went to VIP movie screenings and to numerous amusement parks including Disneyland, Six Flags and Hershey Park. Among other experiences provided by our National trips, the Kids celebrated Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana, skied the beautiful slopes of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and spent a week discovering the magic of Broadway in New York City. None of this would have been possible without you! Next year marks 30 years since The Sunshine Kids Foundation was established when one woman, Rhoda Tomasco, decided to make a difference. It has, however, been your support, generosity and kindness that have been the catalyst of the Foundation. As we embark on our 30th year anniversary, the Board of Directors would again like to thank you for your support and we hope that you will continue to be a part of The Sunshine Kids family as long as there are Kids with cancer in need. Thank You. Sincerely, Dr. Akara Forsythe Board Chairperson Dr. Akara Forsythe (pictured top left) with Sunshine Kids in New Orleans, LA. “This trip was a huge turning point for our daughter and we are so grateful that you were there to help her find her way again.” --Sunshine Kid Parent 2 2011 Regional and National Events JANuARy Harlem Globetrotters - Omaha, NE Spring Fling Art Workshop - Los Angeles, CA Houston Texans NFL Sideline Experience - Houston, TX Arts & Crafts Party at Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center - Long Beach, CA Sesame Street Live - Omaha, NE Hospital Party at Texas Children’s Hospital - Houston, TX Family Day at Museum of Natural History - New York City, NY Sunshine Kids Mad Potter Painting Party - Houston, TX Disney on Ice Performance at Bryant Park - New York City, NY Arts & Crafts Party at Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital - Palo Alto, CA Arts & Crafts Party at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles - Los Angeles, CA Spa Day at Yale Pediatric Hematology/Oncology - Guilford - Guilford, CT Circus Party at Texas Children’s Hospital - Houston, TX Arts & Crafts Party at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center - Hartford, CT Arts & Crafts Party at Southern California Permanente Medical Group - Los Angeles, CA Chivas USA Soccer Game - Carson, CA Disney On Ice - New York City, NY “Wizard of Oz” - Hartford, CT MAy Arts & Crafts Party at Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center - Long Beach, CA Arts & Crafts Party at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center - Hartford, CT Washington D.C. PLAYING THE FIELD IN THE COMMUNITY: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OF THE MLB AND HALL OF FAME HONORS THESIS Presented to the Honors College of Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Graduation in the Honors College by Samantha Kelling San Marcos, Texas May 2017 PLAYING THE FIELD IN THE COMMUNITY: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OF THE MLB AND HALL OF FAME by: Samantha Kelling Thesis Supervisor: Oren Renick, M.P.H., J.D. School of Health Administration Approved: Heather C. Galloway, Ph D. Dean, Honors College ABSTRACT This research analyzes how Major League Baseball and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum impact the youth in their surrounding area through community engagement. Community engagement programs are chosen and measured based on their interactions, connections, the fostering of goodwill, and the development of relationships with the youth and the community. Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities, Be A Superior Example, and the recipients of the Roberto Clemente Award are chosen to represent the three types of programs studied. This research will observe the strengths and weakness to help determine the impact of each program. The success of each program is finally determined on whether the intended goals are met, by the growth of participants, the growth regarding area impacted, and the growth in opportunities. Interviews and MLB Community Reports find that Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities experiences the greatest increase in growth in every aspect of the program. However, the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities growth results in not every city gaining the same influential experience. A greater connection is established in the smaller community engagement events, such as organization-led or individual- led programs.

Astros Daily Clips Wednesday, September 21, 2016 Astros win in 10, continue Wild Card ascent By Rick Eymer and Brian McTaggart / MLB.com OAKLAND -- The Astros are surging just at the right time. George Springer shot a single up the middle in the 10th inning to score Tony Kemp, who had doubled off Sean Doolittle, from third base to send the Astros to their fifth win in their last six games, 2-1, over the A's on Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum. "I understood I just had to hit it through the infield somehow," Springer said. "Just like I was taught before, you find a way and help the team." In a game in which Jose Altuve collected his 200th hit of the season, the Astros moved to within two games of the Orioles for the second spot in the American League Wild Card race with 11 games remaining, staying one-half game behind the Tigers and moving one game ahead of the Mariners. Relief pitcher Chris Devenski got the win in relief with 3 2/3 perfect innings, and Ken Giles stranded the bases loaded for his 13th save. "We played well," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "We fight until the end, we play our 27 outs, 30 outs, 33 outs -- whatever it was going to take, we were going to play 'til the end. Our guys understand where we're at on the calendar. We've played important games lately. They're playing very loose and certainly want to spoil some seasons, so it sets up to be a very intense playoff atmosphere game." Astros starter Joe Musgrove and A's starter Sean Manaea were locked in a scoreless battle through five innings before Oakland pushed a run across in the sixth on a bases-loaded grounder off the bat of Stephen Vogt.
