In this newsletter you can read in more detail the work that DSSN Member Schools have been doing this term. You will also find enclosed details of our School Games Competitions and some information from our sponsors. I look forward to working with you all next term with lots more exciting opportunities available to all ‘DSSN’ Schools.

This years Dacorum Dance Competition took place on Friday 28th March at Sportspace . The theme this year was ‘Animals’ With over 500 tickets reserved it was going to be a busy night and a daunting experience for some of our younger perform- ers. 5 Secondary schools entered—, Astley Cooper, Longdean, JFK and The Cavendish School. The judges had a tough deci- sion this year as the standard of performances was brilliant. Astley Cooper won the Secondary competition and also took third place with Longdean school coming a very close 2nd.

The primary competition was also of a high standard this year. We had two new school enter for the first time which was great to see. Entries came from St Albert the Great, , Greenway, and Leverstock Green. Congratulations to St Albert the great for winning, Nash Mills for coming second and Greenway for coming third.

We also had showcase performances from Spotlight dance which was a real treat. Thank you to Judges Debbie Woodard, Lilli Bentley and Clare McCawley and also to 3 Strands Media for providing the music and lighting. CHANGE 4 LIFE DISABILITY DAY On Wednesday 22nd January DSSN ran a Change 4 Life Festival at Hemel Hemp- stead Sportspace. Change 4 Life is a na- tional programme trying to raise partici- pation levels of pupils and also to make them more aware of healthy eating.

Nash Mills, Gaddesden Row, Lever- stock Green, Lime Walk, Brockswood and Yewtree took part in the event. Activities included, Skipping, Gym- nastics, Dance, Badminton, Athletics, Boccia and Tri Golf. The students had a great time thanks to the leaders from Hemel Hemsp- tead school who ran the activities. On Friday 7th February we held our annual disability day for main- stream pupils. The event took place at Queens school in . Activities included Football, Urban Rebounding, Cricket and Wheel- chair Badminton. Students from various schools in Dacorum attended the event, and some were even talent spotted. We hope now to raise awareness of disability sports and get more young people participat- ing.

We also had a tray of Blueberries to give out to the school that put the most effort into the event. The blueberries were courtesy of John at Skip2bFit. Yewtree were awarded the blueberries. One young girl got took them home and made Blueberry muffins with them

This years Football league has been great. Lots of schools taking part and finishing off their matches. Luckily the rain did not stop play too much. Below are the results we have for the league. The final is to be played on Thursday 24th April.

YEAR 1 AND 2 SPORTS FAYRES AND INTER SCHOOL COMPETITIONS The third of our year 2 sports fayres happened on 20th January with schools attending a morning or afternoon of activities including speed stacking, athletics, crazy catch, dance, aerobics, multi skills, tri golf and target games. Schools that took part in the morning were:- Lime Walk, St Albert the Great, , Yewtree, Leverstock Green, George Street, Bovingdon and Gade Valley. The afternoon session was attended by :- St Pauls, Aycliffe Drive, Kings Langley, Pixies Hill, Boxmoor, South Hill, and Brockswood. The 2nd of the year 1 inter school competitions took place on 3rd February at Hemel Hempstead Sportspace. Aycliffe Drive, Chambersbury, Belswains, Bovingdon, Kings Langley, and South Hill took part in the morning session with South Hill Winning. St Roses, The Reddings, Nash Mills, Holtsmere End Infants, Leverstock Green, and George Street all took part in the afternoon session with The Reddings winning. Our third event was unfortunately cancelled and will be taking place on 1st May—The overall district winner will be announced after this date.

Staff Training On Thursday 16th January Saracens ran a teacher training twilight inset session at Cavendish School. 36 staff attended and learnt about game play, refereeing and took away some skills and drills they could use in their schools. On Friday 17th January we ran a Health Matters Training day for KS1 in the morning and KS2 in the afternoon. Staff attending gained knowledge of the resources and took part in practical activities. Schools then had the option to buy the resources. On Friday 31st January the PE coordinators were brought together for a training day at Lloyds in Hat- field. Some updates were given out in the morning around Sport Premium Funding and Kitemark.. The Rockets leadership package for KS1 was then ex- plained and after lunch we delivered some Change 4 Life training. On Tuesday 25th March another teacher training day was delivered at Herts Sports Village. The morning session focused on multi skills for Foundation and KS1. Innov8e delivered the session and staff took away invaluable skills and ideas. The afternoon session on Cricket was delivered by Herts County Cricket Associ- ation and focused on skills and drills to be used in schools and also competition formats—We had to can- cel the KS1 and KS2 Tennis course as not enough peo- ple signed up to attend. www.herts-ssco.org/Dacorum/new/index.php 4 PartnershipNetwork Competitions Events Spring & News 2014 (cont.) Netball League 19 teams took part in the district Netball League. This league for girls only has been running for numerous years, and is still successful to- day. The results table below shows the winners for each pool who will receive their trophies at the tournament on Friday 25th April. Con- gratulations to all that took part and especially to Bridgewater, St Pauls, Bovingdon A and Belswains for winning their pools. The league will run again next year and the AGM will be held in September.

Year 2 Athletics During week commencing 10th February the year 2 indoor athletics competition was held. 4 events took place at Longdean, Hemel Hempstead Sportspace, Sportspace and The Cavendish School. Teams participated in obstacle relays, 4x1 sprints, Long Jump, Javelin, Speed Bounce and Balance. Scores were then collated across the week to get an overall Dacorum winner. The girls section was won by Holtsmere End Junior, and the boys section by Kings Langley. Well done to Kings Langley who won overall with a combined score of 226 points.

LEADERSHIP NEWS 2014

Step into Sport Camp The Cavendish school as the lead for Leadership Coaching and Volunteering in received nominations to take 16 pupils to Lough- borough for the annual Step into Sport camp. 8 mainstream leaders wishing to work with SEND pupils were selected and of the 8 SEND spaces only 5 were able to attend the event. After a couple of last minute drop outs we set off early on Monday 31st March to Loughbor- ough with 11 students. The camp consisted of 3 days of training, co-operation and leadership, staying in the halls of residence and of course the disco. Our 11 students were a credit to Hertfordshire. 4 awards were given out at the end of the camp attended by over 150 students from across the Country. Joe Fundrey from Marlborough School and Charlotte Wight from Queens School received 2 of the 4 awards. Well done to both of them. A very proud moment for Hertfordshire and for me. The journey home with 11 excited students with lots of ideas of what they wanted to do next was great. We will be organising the county conference next year putting into practice the skills they learnt!

The second term of Sainsburys School Games competitions have got off to a brilliant start with competitions in Sportshall Athletices, Trampoilining, Rowing, High Five and the Saracens Tag Rugby Festival

The winning schools of these events will be taking part in the Hertfordshire Sainsburys School Games finals in the week of 25th March 2014

AUTUM TERM BOCCIA TEAM GOES TO REGSIONAL AND NATIONAL COMPETITION The Longdean School team of Lewis Brunt, Rachel Hartley, Thomas Hartley and Jessica Stret- ton represented Hertfordshire and Dacorum in East Region U19 Schools Boccia Cham- pionship having qualified from the Hertfordshire County Competition. The Longdean team played a series of matches against the champions of Hertfordshire (won 13 – 1), the champions of Essex (won 5 – 4) and the champions of Cambridgeshire (won 7 – 4). By winning all their matches Longdean became Champions and qualified for the National Championship which they attended on 6th March in Shef- field. In the initial group stage Longdean finished 3rd. However that included a comfortable victory against last year’s champions, Danum Academy from Yorkshire, and a very narrow defeat on the last ball played by the eventual 4th placed team, West Lea School from London. Defeat in the play-off game meant that Longdean finished creditable 8th overall in what was a very high level of competition. Well done to the team for such an impressive performance.

The Sainsburys School Games competitions took place the week commencing Monday 17th March at Wodson Park. Having gotten through various Level 2 competitions, schools from Dacorum represented us against the rest of the County in Trampolining, Sports Hall Athletics and Rowing.

On Tuesday 18th March the day began at Wodson Park with primary and SLD Sportshall Athletics both Bridgewater and Woodfield were representing Dacorum. Both teams did extremely well and came across some tough competition on the day. Woodfield’s U12 team brought home a bronze medal and the U19 team came second receiving silver medals. After also spending the morning competing in many athletic events Bridgewater came 7th scoring 296 points. Well done to both teams!

In the afternoon Secondary Sportshall Athletics got underway, year 7 and 8 boys and girls teams from JFK travelled to Wodson Park to compete against other schools across the County. All students had a great time and enjoyed being at the event. Well done to all students for taking part!

During the same afternoon Rowing was also taking place, Cavendish U14 students travelled to Wodson Park to take part in the event. Both boys and girls teams performed well coming 4thjust missing out on a medal! Well done.

On Wednesday 19th March Cavendish and Ashlyns pupils travelled to Queens school to take part in the level three Trampolining final. All students performed extremely well and enjoyed the day, unfortunately Dacorum were up against some tough competition. Students in next step two came 9th, next step three came 8th and our elite pupils also finished on 8th place.
