SOMERSET Aberdeen from without; and that it enjoyed little local support.3 The measure of support varies according to the version: in one, the invading mob is “instantly joined by a great number of the citizens”; in another, the Aberdonians “shed their blood in defence of their holy faith, and in attempting to rescue the sacred buildings of Aberdeen from the hands of the sacrilegious destroyer”.4 All versions agree, however, in identifying the start of the reformation with the arrival of the Angus and Mearns men. As one writer puts it: Reformation came first to a reluctant Aberdeen through violence. When it became clear that Aberdeen was not going to support the revolt of the Lords of the Congregation against Catholicism voluntarily, an armed mob of reformers from Angus and Mearns occupied the burgh in the last days of December 1559, looting three priories. Even when Protestantism gained official approval at the national level, no strong support for it appeared in the region.5 The document to which Kirk drew attention, which shows the error of the traditional view, is the reply of the Lords of the Congregation to questions from the English Privy Council on 24th December 1559. THE “ALTERATION OF RELIGION” IN ABERDEEN IN 1559 3 the town of Aberdeen has, by their baillies, lately suited our preachers, and obtained them; so that now there is two of our ministers, Paul Methven and Adam Heriot, travailing with them in the Evangel. They have already reformed their kirks, destroyed their altars, promised the destruction and abolition of the dens of idolatry, and quickly to join themselves with us.6 Thus the reformation in Aberdeen was well under way before the men from Angus and the Mearns arrived; it was not imposed from without; and it evidently enjoyed considerable local support. These simple facts are surprisingly significant, both for an understanding of Protestantism in Aberdeen in the sixteenth century, and also for an understanding of the degree of support for the Reformation in other parts of Scotland. Indeed they show, we think, that much current historical research seriously underestimates the measure of popular support that the Reformation enjoyed in Scotland. In this article we re-assess the strength of Protestantism in Aberdeen in the period 1559-60 in the light of the document just mentioned. The article is divided into eight sections. The first summarizes the progress of Protestantism in Aberdeen in the months immediately preceding the introduction of Protestant worship. The second is devoted to the change of worship itself – the so-called “alteration of religion” – which occurred, we think, in October and November 1559. The third section discusses the response of the burgh to the announcement on 29th December 1559 that the Angus and Mearns men were intending to visit the town to destroy the friaries. This response has been curiously misinterpreted by many writers on the subject. The next four sections discuss the visit of the Angus and Mearns men in January 1559/60 and the subsequent progress of the reformation in Aberdeen, through to September 1560. In the final section we draw some conclusions, the main one being that if Protestantism was the dominant popular religion in Aberdeen by the end of 1559 then it was probably so in many other parts of Scotland, unless we suppose that Aberdeen was uniquely Protestant. As we have mentioned, this conclu- sion is contrary to the trend of historical writings for the last fifty 6 J. " Greatly daring therefore, the writer, though Irish, because the Irishman turned out to be an American, confines his remarks in this paper to the Scottish Eucharistic Rite, as limitations of space prevent discussion of other Reformed movements on the Continent, in England, Ireland, America, and elsewhere. The aim of the Reformers concerning the Eucharistic Rite was threefold : (i) Reform of the rite. The earliest Reformed rites were based on the Hagenau Missal, and their lineage through Schwarz, Bucer, Calvin, and Knox is traced by Hubert, Smend, Albertz, and W. D. Maxwell. (ii) That the worshippers should be active participants in the rite. This was achieved principally by the use of the vernacular and the introduction of congregational singing. (iii) Weekly communion. This ideal failed because of medieval legacy and the interference of civil authority, so that quarterly communion became the general practice. Public worship, however, when there was no celebration, was based on the eucharistic norm. The second half of the seventeenth century, and the eighteenth century, proved to be a period of decline and poverty in worship, and liturgical renewal in Scotland only began in the nineteenth century. This falls into four periods. (a) Prior to 1865, when it was principally the work of individuals. (b) After 1865, when the Church Service Society was founded and the principal leaders were G. W. Sprott and Thomas Leishman, both of whom knew their history.

This article focuses on the woodcuts used in Holinshed’s Chronicles to illustrate the representation of warrior queens in England and surprisingly we find only two: Cordeilla and Boudica, from Britain’s prehistory and ancient history. It describes and analyses these images in order to demonstrate the historiographical and political objective of such works. This article also reviews the information known about the artist and tries to understand why these pictures were removed from the second edition of 1587. [Communicated January 11, 1869, with an Introductory Note.] NEAR the northern shores of the Firth of Forth, and within sight of Edin- burgh, lies the island anciently known as Emona, and in later times as Inchcolm, the island of St Columba. It is of very small extent, scarcely over half a mile in length, and 400 feet in width at its broadest part. The tide of commerce and busy life which ebbs and flows around has left the little inch in a solitude as profound as if it gemmed the bosom of some Highland loch, a solitude which impresses itself deeply on the stranger who comes to gaze on its ruined, deserted, and forgotten Abbey. Few even of those who visit the island from the beautiful village of Aberdour, close to it, know anything of its history, and as few out of sight of the island know of its existence at all. But although now little known beyond the shores of the Forth, Inchcolm formerly held a high place in the veneration of the Scottish people as the cradle of the religious life of the surrounding districts, and was second only to lona as a holy isle in whose sacred soil it was the desire of many generations to be buried. It numbered amongst its abbots men of high position and learning. Noble benefactors enriched it with broad lands and rich gifts, and its history and remains, like the strata of some old mountain, bear the marks of every great wave of life which has passed over our country.

    1 “To [my history], which in its Scottish dress could interest Scotsmen only, I have, with some trouble, given the power to speak to all through the medium of Latin.”1 John Lesley’s characterisation of his own De Origine et Moribus Scotorum (1578) identifies two important and obvious features of Scottish Latinitas: the breadth of audience, and the Scottish participation in European culture. Even in Lesley’s account, however, there may be discerned an element of defensiveness, in the need to court an audience for Scottish affairs using an international language. While such a position is not really tenable, given the interest in and importance of Lesley’s queen to European affairs, nevertheless it could be argued that a similar defensiveness has coloured the scholarship of Scottish Latinitas for several, far more recent, decades.2 This collection challenges that perspective, by exploring without apology aspects of Scottish Latinitas from the eighth century to the seventeenth, and opening that great area of Scottish culture to further scholarly scrutiny, to support its rediscovery in anthologies and histories, and crucially to embed it in our understanding of Scottish culture from the eighth to the eighteenth centuries, rather than isolating it as a curious and additional cousin to the vernacular cultures.3 That a battle standard for new approaches to Scottish Latinitas should be raised by a volume of essays with its foundations in the 13th International Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Scottish Language and Literature, held in Padua

    Response from the RC Diocese of Aberdeen - ACC Consultation on Future of St Peter’s & Riverbank Primary Schools - Nov/Dec 2016 - P a g e | 1 As this Consultation has unfolded, there has been no shortage of articulate and engaged adults, with opinions that need to be heard. They seek to achieve a shared goal - the best possible educational future for their children; they do not, however, share a unified vision of how to get there. This might seem to be precisely the place where the opinion of the Church, especially with regard to St Peter’s, might help. Until relatively recently, however, it has been difficult to identify, within either the proposals presented for consultation (Options A and B), or a subsequent development that arose from discussion among St Peter’s parents (Option C), any position that seems uniquely ‘right’. The consequence of this was that little specific guidance could, in the early stages, be offered to anyone who might seek that from the local Church; neither could we offer unstinting support to individuals or groups supporting one or other point of view. The consultation process, in fact, benefits from this dearth of guidance. The local Church has been listening with ACC to the many voices that have contributed to the Consultation. It has been a positive experience. Various features of the picture have become clear: 1. St Peter’s and Riverbank are both excellent and happy schools searching for a future. 2. They serve communities, each of which is making entirely legitimate demands for their children. They are not exaggerating their needs.
