ibly important in defensive situations, and while using a larger round is a good thing, the trade-offs between power, controllability, affordability, and magazine capacity should all be taken into account when selecting a caliber for concealed carry.

WHAT KIND OF AMMUNITION 4 SHOULD I CARRY? Selecting a type of ammunition presents its own problems. There are a lot of brands out there, each with multiple defensive ammu- nition lines within in their brands. And then you get into minutia such as bullet weight and velocity. When you’re !rst shopping for concealed carry ammunition, your top prior- ity should be to !nd ammunition that works in your gun. Different guns perform differently with dif- ferent ammunition, depending on the shape of the bullet, how the primer is set, how hard the primer is and many other contributing factors. When you buy a box of defensive ammunition you haven’t used before, it’s a good idea to put at least 100 rounds through your gun. This will help you determine if it’s going to work reliably in your !rearm and will help you better understand how the ammu- nition shoots and how well you shoot with it. Because some defensive rounds are load- ed “hotter” to give the bullet more velocity when leaving the barrel, they can cause greater recoil when the gun is !red. While this isn’t a big deal for many, for those who are newer to shooting or struggle more with recoil control it may come into effect. When you !rst start carrying you feel like everyone knows you are carrying.

Having to sit on the toilet in a public bathroom is, shall we say, also awkward.

You squat while shopping, rather than bending over, and avoid reaching up high for products.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

A wise man once said “Carry your guns, people.” It’s an excellent admonition for those of us that do exercise the “bear” part of “keep and bear arms.” Society at large bene!ts from the presence of armed, responsible CCW holders across the nation.

In the past 15 years, access to concealed carry has changed dramatically across the nation. It’s the fastest growing segment of gun ownership. Hundreds of thousands of people sign up for their new permits each year, and many states have enacted laws allowing for concealed carry without a permit. If you’d told me 10 years ago that in 2013, Illinois would become a CCW state, I’d have laughed in your face. And yet here we are.

In this issue we’ve talked about the guns, the gear, and some of the training that can be a part of your CCW lifestyle. If you don’t yet have your permit, we hope you’ll use the resources in this issue to begin your trek down that path. If you’ve been carrying for years, perhaps this issue sparked an interest in new guns or gear.

No matter what happens, we hope that you’ve enjoyed it. Concealed carry and its growth are one of the most important issues facing the next generation of gun owners. Please share this issue with your friends and family to help educate and entertain, and continue to preserve our right to keep and bear arms.
