    SOUTH DAKOTA HUNTING AND TRAPPING HANDBOOK 2020 second century habitat program Working Lands Program The focus of the program is to provide a working lands habitat alternative to cropping marginal land. Participants agree to establish grass and forbs on cropland for 5 years and in return receive free seed and a one-time payment of $150 per acre at the beginning of the contract. No haying or grazing is allowed until after August 1 of the second growing season. Between August 1 and March 1, haying is allowed every two years or on 1/2 of the enrolled acres each year; grazing is allowed annually. Frequently Asked Questions 1. Who administers the agreements for the Second Century Habitat working lands program? Participants who enroll in this habitat program will be executing an agreement with the Second Century Habitat Fund, which is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife habitat. Incentive payments will be provided to participating landowners from the Second Century Habitat Fund. 2. How many acres can be enrolled? Minimum size of an individual planting must be 10 acres. The maximum acres each participant can enroll in the program is 160 acres. 3. What acres are eligible to be enrolled in the program? The focus of this program is to enroll marginal cropland such as saline and moist soils, field edges, other less productive soil types or areas producers want to manage as wildlife habitat. 4. How do participants receive the free seed? Upon execution of the agreement, seed will be shipped directly to participating producers at no cost.

South Dakota represents the northern limit of this snake's range in North America. Peripheral populations are often subject to extreme fluctuations in population size and composition because of minimally available and less-than-optimal habitat conditions. The results of this survey work will hopefully help delineate Lined Snake habitat and identify the necessary landscape features to help current • populations thrive. A secondary objective of the survey was to gain a better understanding of herpetofaunal species compositions and abundances in southeastern South Dakota by annotating when, where, and how often additional reptile and amphibian species were encountered. Particular attention was given to species with a state heritage ranking of S1 or S2 . • Based on museum specimens, the Lined Snake is known from two counties in South Dakota - Union and Minnehaha. Both locations are adjacent to the Big Sioux River, which continues to meander through Lincoln County along the state border with Iowa. Riparian habitat has likely provided a corridor for movement between these two regions.

    Environmental Stewardship Introduction Direct and indirect development impacts on natural resources makes it vital that full consideration is given in land use planning decision-making efforts. Natural resources found throughout the county are water, productive soil, sand and gravel, and Sioux quartzite. The protection of native flora and fauna along with the corre- sponding ecosystems in which all things live is as important as ever before to maintain ecological biodiversity. In the years ahead, runoff and soil erosion will be a major problem that needs to be addressed properly for agriculture to remain strong in a growing economy. Wildlife habitat is supported by the density, diversi- ty, and productivity of land and water resources. Soil can be considered the most important natural resource as it provides a grow- ing medium for crops and for the grasses grazed by livestock. The importance of maintaining high quality soil conditions will be an integral task for all landown- ers. The entire county was once glaciated and in the eastern two-thirds of the county the glacial till is covered in most places by loess (NRCS). Sand and gravel deposits can be found in the aquifer basins while the Sioux quartzite has been quarried since the county was settled. The county is fortunate to have available gravel and stone for many uses ranging from sub-grade material for roads to concrete aggregate for riverbank stabilization (NRCS). The County includes thousands of acres of protected land through the resources of various agencies and governments, see Map 5.2 on pg. 53. These protected lands and open spaces will grow in importance as population and demand for land and re- sources increases.
