Songs of Social Unrest Through the Ages, Sat., Dec. 15th; 8pm Come support our scholarship fund while enjoying a program of traditional songs of social unrest from the Middle Ages to the present time. Joy Bennett has been involved in folk music for most of her life. As a member of the quartet Water Sign for 13 years, and the all-female a capella group the Johnson Girls for the past 15 years, she has explored the close-knit harmo- nies of both traditional and contemporary folk music. Joy has performed solo, with Water Sign, the Johnson Girls, with Chris Koldewey, and with guest artists in the US, UK, Canada, and across Europe. Chris Koldewey has been singing and playing folk music, and sea music in particular, since he was a teenager. He comes from a family rich in maritime traditions, and his lullabies as a child were traditional songs of the sea. A public school music teacher by trade, Chris spends his vacation time as a shantyman at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut, one of the few places left where shanties are used for their original purpose – coordinating shipboard tasks. Heather Wood has been a singer for over 40 years, dating back to her days with the Young Tradition and the English folk music revival. She has a great repertoire Continued on next page - 2 - FMSNY Events Details- Continued of ballads, historical songs, love and agricultural songs, and a lot from the humorous side. In addition to the old songs, she has written some exceptionally fine new ones. All three artists will donate their share of the gate receipts to the FMSNY scholarship fund. American Roots Music Legacy in the Songs of Bruce Springsteen. Supervisor: William Bradley Vice, Ph.D. This thesis deals with Bruce Springsteen’s use of American roots music. It shows how exactly he fits in the framework of this tradition, and what are the main connections. Springsteen’s life is briefly outlined prior to the release of his break-through album Born to Run to provide a personal context. This thesis is divided into two chapters. The first one is concerned with the mentioned biography. The second one is further divided into two subchapters that shortly discuss what exactly the term “American roots music” means, and then there are analysis of the two selected trilogies. The first trilogy is his formative one where he had explored the distance between American Dream and reality.

But here we are 19 years later, having done hundreds of concerts large and small, stage plays, recordings , and special events. More than 2,000 kids have been a part of our programs, and we've performed on the East Coast, West Coast, and Canada. I still get the occasional surprise e-mail which goes something like " I was in one of your shows many years ago and I just found your web site. I'm glad to see you're still going strong ! " Of course, the reason we're still going strong is, quite simply, all of YOU!. Those of you who have supported our community outreach for so many years with your contributions, your attendance at our shows, and your help in spreading the word about our programs. We thank you for all you've done to enable us to make a difference in the lives of others. The highlight of our season was the June 1 concert at the Shubert Theater with the Steve Chapin Band.
