Songs of Social Unrest Through the Ages, Sat., Dec. 15th; 8pm J Come support our scholarship fund while enjoying a program of traditional songs of social unrest from the Middle Ages to the present time. Joy Bennett has been involved in folk music for most of her life. As a member of the quartet Water Sign for 13 years, and the all-female a capella group the Johnson Girls for the past 15 years, she has explored the close-knit harmo- nies of both traditional and contemporary folk music. Joy has performed solo, with Water Sign, the Johnson Girls, with Chris Koldewey, and with guest artists in the US, UK, Canada, and across Europe. Chris Koldewey has been singing and playing folk music, and sea music in particular, since he was a teenager. He comes from a family rich in maritime traditions, and his lullabies as a child were traditional songs of the sea. A public school music teacher by trade, Chris spends his vacation time as a shantyman at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut, one of the few places left where shanties are used for their original purpose – coordinating shipboard tasks. Heather Wood has been a singer for over 40 years, dating back to her days with the Young Tradition and the English folk music revival. She has a great repertoire Continued on next page - 2 - FMSNY Events Details- Continued of ballads, historical songs, love and agricultural songs, and a lot from the humorous side. In addition to the old songs, she has written some exceptionally fine new ones. All three artists will donate their share of the gate receipts to the FMSNY scholarship fund. Hosted by the Peoples' Voice Cafe at Community Church of New York. 40 East 35th Street between Park & Madison in Midtown Man- hattan. Doors open 7:30pm. Show time 8pm. General admission $18. THANK YOU! MAHALO! I wanted to send a giant MAHALO to you all for bringing me to the Eisteddfod this year! What a blast! James and I had a great time attending all of the workshops and concerts. And eating all of the food! And we LOVED meeting the people! Such great folks gathered in one place and for one reason--their shared love of traditional music. Magic! It is always an honor to share the music and stories from Molokai and the other Hawaiian islands. (And the hula, too!) Thank you for giving me the opportunity. A delight to share Aloha beyond Hawai'i's shores. I hope it proves to have been fun/ informative for the FMSNY members! And because of the workshops and concerts, my eyes have been reopened (and my Continued on page 8 - 5 - Eileen Pentel Happy Holidays everyone. Hope this December is a happy and healthy month. Thank you to the volunteers last month: Lynn Cole, Jerry Epstein, Clarice Kjerulff, Eileen Pentel, Marilyn Suffet, and Don Wade; they helped when some of our usual helpers were unable to make it because of Sandy's disruptions. Without our hard workers the newsletter would not get sent out. Won't you join us at the next mailing on Wednesday, December 26th. (See page 3.)
