B., India Email: [email protected] ORCID: 0000-0002-4926-2496 Abstract A new species of Carlogonus, Carlogonus bengalensis is described from West Bengal, India. The adult is blackish brown in colour with a yellowish curved tail, round body with 60 segments, 55 mm in length, 5th segment of male bears a hump, telopodite of the gonopod long, flat and band like with a single curved antetorsal process, mesal process with a red spine, proplical lobe with a curved orange spine, inner surface of metaplical fold with sigilla, palette spatula like and a few blepharochatae at the apical margin. Male bears white pad on femur and tibia. Comparison was made with the “exaratus group” of the genus Carlogonus. Keywords: Hump, red spine, sigilla, Suri, whitish pad, yellow tail Introduction A few reports mostly on different aspects of millipedes (except taxonomy) especially on Polydesmid millipedes are available from West Bengal (India). Except the study of Bhakat (2014), there is no report on any aspect of Spirostreptid millipede from this region. Of the Spirostreptid millipede, genus Carlogonus Demange, 1961 includes three Harpagophorid millipede species described in the Southeast Asian genus Thyropygus Pocock, 1894 and the South Asian genus Harpurostreptus Attems, 1936. -

Signed: _____________ Name: _____________ Date: _____________ ABSTRACT The African millipede genus Bicoxidens is endemic to Southern Africa, inhabiting a variety of regions ranging from woodlands to forests. Nine species are known within the genus but Bicoxidens flavicollis is the most dominant and wide spread species found across Zimbabwe. Bicoxidens flavicollis individuals have been found to express phenotypic variation in several morphological traits. The most commonly observed body colours are brown and black. In the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe body colour ranges from orange- yellow to black, individuals from North East of Harare have a green-black appearance and a range in size (75–110 mm). There is disparity in body size which has been noted with individuals ranging from medium to large and displaying variation in the number of body rings. Although much morphological variation has been observed within this species, characterization based on gonopod morphology alone cannot distinguish or define variation between phenotypically distinct individuals. Morphological classification has been found to be too inclusive and hiding significant genetic variation. Taxa must be re-assessed with the implementation of DNA molecular methods to identify the variation between individuals. This study aimed to detect genetic divergence of B. flavicollis due to isolation by distance of populations across Zimbabwe. -

Farfan 2010 Abstract The focus of this thesis is the ecology of invasive millipedes (Diplopoda) in the family Julidae. This particular group of millipedes are thought to be introduced into North America from Europe and are now widely found in many urban, anthropogenic habitats in the U.S. Why are these animals such effective colonizers and why do they seem to be mostly present in anthropogenic habitats? In a review of the literature addressing the role of millipedes in nutrient cycling, the interactions of millipedes and communities of fungi and bacteria are discussed. The presence of millipedes stimulates fungal growth while fungal hyphae and bacteria positively effect feeding intensity and nutrient assimilation efficiency in millipedes. Millipedes may also utilize enzymes from these organisms. In a continuation of the study of the ecology of the family Julidae, a comparative study was completed on mites associated with millipedes in the family Julidae in eastern North America and the United Kingdom. The goals of this study were: 1. To establish what mites are present on these millipedes in North America 2. To see if this fauna is the same as in Europe 3. To examine host association patterns looking specifically for host or habitat specificity. -

This new species, S. arborivagus sp. nov., found on trees, looks particularly similar to the sympatric S. variabilis VandenSpiegel & Golovatch, 2007, but is much larger and has a very different ecological behavior. Phylogenetic analyses based on a concatenated dataset of the COI and 16S rRNA genes and including nine species of Spirostreptidae (including Sechelleptus, Doratogonus Attems, 1914, Bicoxidens Attems, 1928 and Spirostreptus Brandt, 1833), strongly support the monophyly of Sechelleptus. In gen- eral, the traditional zoological knowledge of Pedra Branca’s inhabitants concerning the diplopods is coherent with the academic knowledge. Food type did not affect food passage time in millipedes (p>0.05). The gut is always full (100%) when millipedes are active on the surface. The results support the notion that millipedes, as detritivores, do not adjust food passage time even when the food type/quality changed, as happens when they are active during the rainfall season. Keywords: Litter, detritivores, pellet, transit, time 1. Introduction Millipedes are characterised by high ingestion rates, low assimilation efficiencies and high throughput rates [1, 2]. Plant litter, on which millipedes subsist mainly is of poor quality [3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8] [9] and is composed mainly of cellulose which presents a digestive challenge to the simple and undifferentiated digestive system of millipedes [3]. Although plant litter is abundant, millipedes also feed on living plants [2, 4], soil [5-7, 10, 11], fungi, dead animals and faecal material [3, 4], algae, seeds and fruits 12 and lichens, moss and pollen [8]. -

C. • 1958 Publications of the United States National Museum The scientific publications of the National Museum include two series known, respectively, as Proceedings and Bulletin. The Proceedings series, begun in 1878, is intended primarily as a medium for the publication of original papers based on the collections of the National Museum, that set forth newly acquired facts in biology, anthropology, and geology, with descriptions of new forms and revisions of limited groups. Copies of each paper, in pamphlet form, are distributed as published to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the different subjects. The dates at which these separate papers are published are recorded in the table of contents of each of the volumes. The series of Bulletins, the first of which was issued in 1875, contains separate publications comprising monographs of large zoological groups and other general systematic treatises (occasionally in several volumes), faunal works, reports of expeditions, catalogs of type specimens, special collections, and other material of similar nature. The majority of the volumes are octavo in size, but a quarto size has been adopted in a few in- stances. In the Bulletin series appear volumes under the heading Contribu- tions from the United States National Herbarium, in octavo form, published by the National Museum since 1902, which contain papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum. -

In order to obtain an overview of the faunal composition of the Myriapoda in an Indonesian forest system, the fauna of the Halimun- Salak National Park in western Java was explored during the dry season (September– October 2015) in the framework of the German-Indonesian INDOBIOSYS project (Indonesian Biodiversity Discovery and Information System). A total of 980 Myriapoda specimens were collected by hand by 3–4 researchers from three different sites in the national park, from which 796 specimens were determined to a higher taxonomic level (class, order, family) and 617 specimens were determined to morphospecies. Among these, 27 were Symphyla (4%) (excluded from further analyses), 226 Chilopoda (28%) and 543 Diplopoda (68%). -

GIANT AFRICAN MILLIPEDE Class Order Family Genus Species Diplopoda Spirostreptida Spirostreptidae Archispirostreptus gigas Range: Widespread in lowland areas of E. Africa from Mozambique to Kenya Habitat: Mostly forests but can be found in all habitats; tropics, temperate, desert; under stones, rocks, in moist soil and leaf litter, in moist microclimates Niche: Detritivorous, nocturnal, terrestrial Diet: Wild: Scavengers of humus, rotting leaves, bark, fallen Fruit, and other decaying vegetable matter Zoo: Lettuce, soft fruit, apple, orange, monkey chow Special Adaptations: Millipedes are slow moving and do not bite (unlike centipedes) but are powerful burrowers. They lack venom unlike centipedes. They defend themselves by rolling up into a tight coil. This species secrets an irritating liquid from pores on their body, which acts as a repellant against predators. Other: Millipedes have elongated cylindrical bodies, with two pair of legs per segment. The Giant African Millipede is one of the largest millipedes (15.2 in). These animals grow gradually, adding segments with each molt. The egg is laid singly in soil, two-three weeks (temperature dependent). The hatchlings have few segments. Lifespan averages about 7- 10 years. Monkeys and lemurs have been known to rub millipedes into fur as natural mosquito repellant.
