Producer’s Message:

I am honored to welcome you to our production of Into The Woods and what a treat we have in store for you! Over two years ago we began Into The Woods and what a journey it has been! From the very beginning, this beautiful story has taken our production team to new levels of artistic creativity and after closing our doors on the fateful March 13th, 2020, we had no idea what would become of our show. We have had many hard times over the last year of the coronavirus and saying goodbye to the 2020 cast and crew seniors was undoubtedly one of the hardest experiences of a career. If there was ever a show that was relevant to processing this past year and pulling us together as a team, it is Into the Woods. Weaving together several of the most well known fairy tales, it teaches us all lessons about how life may not turn out the way you intended, but it’s worth making the journey.

As I have said many times throughout this production, "It takes a village” and this show is certainly without exception. A hearty thank you to our record number of volunteers, staff, administration, parents and most of all, the one-of-a-kind students of the cast and crew. I am truly grateful to all of you for what we have collectively accomplished and for how we have learned and grown together. These experiences will last us a lifetime.

And last, but certainly not least, a warm thank you to you, our . Thank you for supporting our school and live theatre in the middle of a pandemic. I truly believe that the is among the most multifaceted educational experiences we can offer our students. A successful show requires excellence from everyone involved; from the artistry of music, acting, dance, and design to the physicality involved in every performance. Team work, problem solving, individual and joint responsibility - it's all there.

As you leave our hall, remember that “no one is alone” and be encouraged by the hard work and perseverance of the young people in our show against incredible odds. They are the future, and from where I am sitting, it looks more and more bright.

- Topp

From the Director:

On the surface, Into the Woods is a clever blend of some of the world's most beloved folktales and a beautiful score brought together by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. Like all of our favorite stories, the best folktales contain light...and darkness. They become a metaphor for our own personal journeys in life: what paths we take, what wishes we make and ultimately what we discover along the way in regards to loss, values, choices, responsibility, and love. Each of our journeys can have a profound effect on everything around us; our story never truly ends. Past decisions and actions, both large and small, guide us through paths like the characters in the show. In life, we continually find ourselves having to return to the woods, faced with new challenges, new perspectives and new choices. This year, more than ever, we have had to endure the woods in a way that none of us ever expected with COVID-19. This furthers our that Into the Woods is a show for this time; a show to illuminate our hardship and strengthen our growth.

Into the Woods is filled with fun and familiar characters, Lapine's ingeniously and intricately woven plot and Sondheim's spectacular music have succeeded in making it one of the most popular, most produced and most beloved shows. Now, I would be a fool to say that all of you sitting in the audience are here because you love this show. After revealing our show at the Choral Concert last spring, there were many of you who I had to beg to give this production of Into the Woods a chance. For those of you who resonate here, I would like to direct your attention to the details of this show...the symbolism of this show. As an Artistic Director, my job is to find the themes of each script and score to guide a team of beautiful people into the vision of what this work of art could be. This year, we focused everything on the word: journey.

I invite you to listen to the orchestra as each character enters the stage, the leaf drop coming into the stage crafted by hands of countless volunteers, the choreography of not only the cast but also our crew, the special effects combined with lighting and sound to further lead you into a certain kind of environment. My hope is that you can find a new way of looking at this show and that you can discover a few other fun surprises along the way. Folktales transcend cultural boundaries after all! May your own personal quests to live "happily '' be ultimately realized. What we wish may not always be the best for us, but remember: no one is alone and someone is on your side.

When I asked some of our students what this show meant for them, they said:

“Into the Woods is not just a musical about a couple of folktale characters meeting in the woods, and getting their wishes. It’s a show about trust, patience, rejection, and much more. There are so many life lessons throughout this that not just the characters learn from, but that anyone can.” “It really was an experience of constantly showing myself what I can do and redefining my own expectations.”

“The people in this production have become my second family, I know that if I'm having trouble or just need someone there to chat with I know I can count on them, and because of these reasons is why this shows means a lot to me personally.”

“This production provides a unique bond that cannot be found anywhere else in my life. having done the same show for 2 consecutive years, it allowed me the opportunity to strengthen the bonds I continue to build with my fellow cast mates.”

“To me, this show means unity and family. Everyone loves and supports each other. It’s a safe place for everyone involved.”

“To walk into a welcoming environment every rehearsal is such a great feeling. Connecting with new people based on interest or similar personalities is one of the greatest parts of my experience.”

“The show almost feels natural to me. I feel as if it's become a part of me as a person because we've all worked on the show during this troubling time, and it's become more of a personal goal to put this show on stage.”

“This show is very important to me because it gave me a sense of normalcy. This year has been tough on so many people but we all have the chance to come together to enjoy art. This show is about togetherness and thinking about the future and that message is so important, especially in our current lives.”

“Having a character that I can relate to has taught me beautiful things about my journey and I think people who watch the show will feel that we are not only bringing our characters to the show, but also ourselves. We all have hopes and dreams and this show represents the achieving of our goals and the twists and turns that result from it. I think our audience members have all felt these feelings and so have we. ” “This production has a special place in my heart. This musical is one of the only experiences that we have left after all that has happened with the pandemic.”

“Every year we all become a family, but this year especially I've learned to embrace that.“

“Into the Woods is a perfect conclusion to my high school musicals. The themes embedded in this musical resemble all aspects of life: The joy, the sadness, the hope, and hardships all endured during life. Every line of dialogue, every lyric, and every measure of music is perfect.” I am more and more swept away by the power of community and family within the excitement of Cedar Cliff’s arts programs. I cannot thank the cast, crew, production staff, as well as our many community volunteers enough for the tireless efforts in which they bring this story to life for you amidst laughter and the pure joy of working together. To my Into the Woods Team: My appreciation for the expertise you have given to this program is immense and wonderful. I could never achieve such a work of art without you, so thank you for all of your ideas and creativity to bring this to life for these students.

I would like to personally recognize the support of Cedar Cliff Music Department. I am truly honored to be a part of this school’s musical program with the importance of excellence and dedication at the forefront of everything they do. Thank you, West Shore School District, for making so many dreams come true for these students and for our staff. It does not go unnoticed.

Enjoy the show and break a leg cast and crew! You are all so loved. - Taylor C.A. Saraiva

From the Choreographer:

When I was in high school, we put on “the classics.” These shows were from the 1950s and 1960s, full of toe-tapping showstoppers and predictable happy endings where the guy got the girl and everyone smiled a lot. No one died; no one mourned. They never seemed to have any connection to our everyday lives. Little did we know what 2020 would have in store for us. The themes and ideas in Into the Woods seem almost prescient now. We have all dealt with loss, grief, and the need for perseverance that ultimately attends the trials of our lives. For the creative team, this show has been two years in the making, and it has truly been a journey.

When we chose this show, the biggest challenge I thought I would face was creating movement for a show that has little to no “dancing.” Into the Woods relies less on traditional choreography than it does musical staging, which consists of everyday movements and strong acting rather than “dancing” to move the show along. I was especially inspired by Kelly Devine’s musical staging in . And our students accepted the challenge and exceeded my highest hopes. I’m so proud of each character up on stage, as I am every year. Over the last two seasons, I have been lucky to be assisted by six wonderful students as my dance and ensemble captains. Natalie, Maryn, and Sophia stepped up this year from assistants to captains, and I am exceedingly proud of them. I also wanted to extend my thanks to Maggie, Kalyka, and Kenna for their help last year as the dance and ensemble captains. They set a wonderful example for this year’s team.

This year is my fifth with Cedar Cliff Productions, which means I have seen two groups of students from freshman year through to graduation. I did not get to say a proper thank you and good-bye to the class of 2020, and their absence was felt this season. Our 2021 seniors have certainly made their mark on our program as well, and I almost cannot believe that the freshman who started with will be moving on to amazing things. It’s been wonderful to see you grow into amazing people, and all of our seniors will be missed next year.

I must thank Taylor, Matt, and our entire production team for traveling through the woods together. It is the dream team! My ladies at Wevodau Dance Center support our productions each year, and it is because of them that I even know how to dance. I’ll be back at the barre soon. My family is ridiculously supportive of my theater dreams, and I love them. Special thanks to my Dad for coming out to help build another invisible set piece. Finally, I thank Jason and Elliott for being the best boys in the world. Without you both, I would not be able to do what I do.

My work on the 2020 production of Into the Woods is dedicated to the memory of Christina Smith and AJ & Holly Nicolette, three wonderful people who left us too soon. My work on the 2021 production is dedicated to two wonderful boys: My son Elliott, who has weathered the pandemic better than anyone I know, and my nephew Charlie, whose imminent arrival has brought our family immense joy during these dark months. You are my boy wonders.

Enjoy the show!

- Meg Dramaturgy Notes:

Stephen Sondheim is considered royalty in the world of musical theater. Born in , and raised on the , his childhood deeply influenced the content of his later shows, Into the Woods in particular. After his parents’ divorce, he moved with his mother to Doylestown, , a move that was a pivot point for his life as a musician. He was already playing the piano and organ at age 12, and he began to write songs. He used these activities to escape the psychological abuse of his mother; he also spent lots of time with a neighbor boy, who happened to be the son of Oscar Hammerstein II of Rogers and Hammerstein. Sondheim is quoted as saying that Hammerstein taught him “virtually everything I know about songwriting,” and served as a “surrogate father” to him.

Sondheim got his start on Broadway in the late 1950s when and were searching for a lyricist for their musical adaptation of entitled . After the show opened in 1957, he continued to work as a lyricist on (1959). He moved quickly into composing his own shows, defining musical theater in the 1960s and 1970s with director Hal Prince in shows like: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Company (1970), (1971), (1973), and : The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979). In the 1980s, Sondheim began to collaborate with playwright James Lapine with works like Sunday in the Park with George (1984), which focused on and art of George Saurat, and Into the Woods (1987). Sondheim’s most famous recent work is the revival of his show (2004). He has been awarded eight , eight Grammy awards, an Academy Award, and shares a Pulitzer Prize for Drama with James Lapine for Sunday in the Park with George. Sondheim is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and turns 90 years old on March 22 of this year.

The original production of Into the Woods included a “who’s who” of Broadway in 1987 with as the Baker’s Wife, Chip Zinn as the Baker, and as the Witch. The 2002 revival used in the role of the witch and incorporated some new folklore characters, such as the Three Little Pigs. The 2014 Disney film brought this show to a wider audience with an all star cast that included , , , and .

Into the Woods incorporates multiple beloved folktales, as well as one created by Sondheim and Lapine (the Baker and his Wife) for the show inspired by Sondheim’s early years. Our production also includes an ensemble of folklore characters from (Germany), Hans Christian Anderson (Danish), and even a Pennsylvania Dutch character (Mountain Mary). Folk stories evolve from an oral storytelling tradition that is over time codified into a commonly accepted version of a tale. The compiled many stories in their works, most of which were told to convey a moral lesson, as were the stories of Hans Christian Anderson. Each of the ensemble characters are listed with their actor, so keep an eye out for how the characters interact and enhance the story. WHO'S WHO
