Over two years ago we began Into The Woods and what a journey it has been! From the very beginning, this beautiful story has taken our production team to new levels of artistic creativity and after closing our doors on the fateful March 13th, 2020, we had no idea what would become of our show. We have had many hard times over the last year of the coronavirus and saying goodbye to the 2020 cast and crew seniors was undoubtedly one of the hardest experiences of a career. If there was ever a show that was relevant to processing this past year and pulling us together as a team, it is Into the Woods. Weaving together several of the most well known fairy tales, it teaches us all lessons about how life may not turn out the way you intended, but it’s worth making the journey. As I have said many times throughout this production, "It takes a village” and this show is certainly without exception. A hearty thank you to our record number of volunteers, staff, administration, parents and most of all, the one-of-a-kind students of the cast and crew. I am truly grateful to all of you for what we have collectively accomplished and for how we have learned and grown together. These experiences will last us a lifetime. And last, but certainly not least, a warm thank you to you, our audience. Thank you for supporting our school and live theatre in the middle of a pandemic. I truly believe that the high school musical is among the most multifaceted educational experiences we can offer our students. A successful show requires excellence from everyone involved; from the artistry of music, acting, dance, and design to the physicality involved in every performance. Team work, problem solving, individual and joint responsibility - it's all there. As you leave our hall, remember that “no one is alone” and be encouraged by the hard work and perseverance of the young people in our show against incredible odds. They are the future, and from where I am sitting, it looks more and more bright. - Topp From the Director: On the surface, Into the Woods is a clever blend of some of the world's most beloved folktales and a beautiful score brought together by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. Like all of our favorite stories, the best folktales contain light...and darkness. They become a metaphor for our own personal journeys in life: what paths we take, what wishes we make and ultimately what we discover along the way in regards to loss, values, choices, responsibility, and love. Each of our journeys can have a profound effect on everything around us; our story never truly ends. Past decisions and actions, both large and small, guide us through paths like the characters in the show. In life, we continually find ourselves having to return to the woods, faced with new challenges, new perspectives and new choices. This year, more than ever, we have had to endure the woods in a way that none of us ever expected with COVID-19. This furthers our passion that Into the Woods is a show for this time; a show to illuminate our hardship and strengthen our growth. Into the Woods is filled with fun and familiar characters, Lapine's ingeniously and intricately woven plot and Sondheim's spectacular music have succeeded in making it one of the most popular, most produced and most beloved shows. Now, I would be a fool to say that all of you sitting in the audience are here because you love this show. After revealing our show at the Choral Concert last spring, there were many of you who I had to beg to give this production of Into the Woods a chance. For those of you who resonate here, I would like to direct your attention to the details of this show...the symbolism of this show. As an Artistic Director, my job is to find the themes of each script and score to guide a team of beautiful people into the vision of what this work of art could be. This year, we focused everything on the word: journey. I invite you to listen to the orchestra as each character enters the stage, the leaf drop coming into the stage crafted by hands of countless volunteers, the choreography of not only the cast but also our crew, the special effects combined with lighting and sound to further lead you into a certain kind of environment.

  • The Nineteenth-Century Russian Gypsy Choir and the Performance of Otherness
The Nineteenth-Century Russian Gypsy Choir and the Performance of Otherness Erik R. Scott Summer 2008 Erik R. Scott is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History, at the University of California, Berkeley Acknowledgments I would like to thank Professor Victoria Frede and my fellow graduate students in her seminar on Imperial Russian History. Their careful reading and constructive comments were foremost in my mind as I conceptualized and wrote this paper, first for our seminar in spring 2006, now as a revised work for publication. Abstract: As Russia’s nineteenth-century Gypsy craze swept through Moscow and St. Petersburg, Gypsy musicians entertained, dined with, and in some cases married Russian noblemen, bureaucrats, poets, and artists. Because the Gypsies’ extraordinary musical abilities supposedly stemmed from their unique Gypsy nature, the effectiveness of their performance rested on the definition of their ethnic identity as separate and distinct from that of the Russian audience. Although it drew on themes deeply embedded in Russian— and European—culture, the Orientalist allure of Gypsy performance was in no small part self-created and self-perpetuated by members of Russia’s renowned Gypsy choirs. For it was only by performing their otherness that Gypsies were able to seize upon their specialized role as entertainers, which gave this group of outsiders temporary control over their elite Russian audiences even as the songs, dances, costumes, and gestures of their performance were shaped perhaps more by audience expectations than by Gypsy musical traditions. The very popularity of the Gypsy musical idiom and the way it intimately reflected the Russian host society would later bring about a crisis of authenticity that by the end of the nineteenth century threatened the magical potential of Gypsy song and dance by suggesting it was something less than the genuine article.
