VI Abstract The late Cenozoic Lake Beds succession forms the most significant strata for economic and academic aspects in the Rukwa Rift Basin, yet represents the least studied and most poorly understood sedimentary package in the basin. Deposition of the Lake Beds succession resulted from the tectonic development of the modern East African Rift System, and thus represents an important archive of the associated environmental and climate changes in eastern Africa, as well as a record of floral and faunal evolution during this time. Economically, the Rukwa Rift Basin was subject to brief, but unsuccessful hydrocarbon exploration during the late 1980s. The results of these investigations were inconclusive, but indicated potential source and reservoir rocks for hydrocarbon in the different portion of the basin stratigraphy, underlying the Lake Beds succession. However, hydrocarbon exploration in the basin has been hampered by a poor understanding of the basin stratigraphy and sedimentology. For instance, the upper half of the rift stratigraphy (including the Lake Beds succession) was long considered to be too young for hydrocarbon generation and accumulation. However, recentl discoveries of significant hydrocarbon accumulations in the Neogene rift basin strata in Lake Albert (Uganda) and Turkana (Kenya) have prompted renewed hydrocarbon exploration in the Rukwa Rift Basin by Heritage Oil, but with a focus on the potentially correlative Late Cenozoic Lake Beds succession. This project was, therefore, developed to conduct the first detailed investigation on Lake Beds stratigraphic and sedimentology, via outcrop-based lithofacies mapping, sedimentary petrology, X-ray power diffraction mineralogy, provenance analysis, geochronology, sequence stratigraphy and re-examination of existing legacy exploration well-cuttings. The results demonstrate a complex stratigraphy and depositional history for the Lake Beds, and are used to: establish a formal stratigraphic framework; reconstruct tectonic, paleoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic trends in the basin through time; and assess the hydrocarbon prospectivity of these strata. Two new formations, herein named the Malangali and Ilasilo formations, are defined. The Malangali Formation represents a previously unrecognized late Miocene to Pliocene unit in the RRB, which is subdivided into the lower Mpona and upper Hamposia members. A series of sandy ridges, palaeolacustrine terraces and palaeounderwater delta fans are related to an Early Holocene high lake level and subsequent progressive lowering. The maximum lake level was controlled by the altitude of the watershed between the Rukwa and Tanganyika hydrological systems. Taking as reference the present elevation of the palaeolacustrine terraces around Lake Rukwa, two orders of vertical tectonic movement are evidenced: i) a general uplift centred on the Rungwe Volcanic Province between the Rukwa and Malawi Rift Basins; and ii) a tectonic northeastward tilting of the entire Rukwa Rift Basin, including the depression and rift shoulders. This is supported by the observed hydromorphological evolution. Local uplift is also induced by the development of an active fault zone in the central part of the depression, in a prolongation of the Mbeya Range-Galula Fault system.

The occurrence of this material in Hunan increases the known geographic range of titanosauriforms in eastern Asia. D'autre part, elles sont egalement largement heritees de la phase de rifting Karoo (perrno-triassique).

Here, we describe the first peirosaurid from the Cerro Lisandro Formation, Bayomesasuchus hernandezi gen. et sp. nov. The material corresponds to a fragmentary skull and mandible. Although frag - mentary, this is the most complete crocodyliform specimen recorded for the Cerro Lisandro Formation. Este dinosaurio saurópodo, que se describe en la revista PLOS ONE, representa una especie única y proporciona nuevos conocimientos sobre la evolución de estos vertebrados. Los titanosaurios fueron el grupo más extenso de dinosaurios, los animales terrestres más grandes que han pisado la Tierra. Alcanzaron su máxima diversidad en el Cretácico tardío después de que todos los demás grupos de saurópodos desaparecieran. Sin embargo, su evolución temprana es poco conocida debido a la escasez de fósiles bien conservados, especialmente fuera de América del Sur. De ahí la importancia de este nuevo ejemplar. Su descripción se ha hecho solo a partir de un espécimen excavado en una cantera a lo largo del río Mtuka, en el suroeste de Tanzania.

Notosuchia is a diverse clade of Crocodyliformes that achieved a remarkable 18 diversity during the Cretaceous. This group is particularly abundant in continental 19 deposits of Gondwana throughout the Cretaceous, especially in South America. 20 Notosuchia was first recognized as a distinct group by the early work of Gasparini in the 21 1970’s and in the last decades numerous discoveries and studies have increased the 22 geographical, temporal and taxonomical scope of this clade. Here we analyze the 23 patterns of diversity of Notosuchia during the Cretaceous, considering their taxic and 24 phylogenetic diversity, as well as implementing sampling corrections aiming to account 25 for the uneven fossil record of different stages of the Cretaceous. We identify two 26 subsequent pulses of diversification in the late Early Cretaceous and the middle Late 27 Cretaceous, followed by two separate extinction events that occurred during the latest 28 Cretaceous (Campanian/Maastrichtian). We discuss the contribution of the South 29 American, African, and Malagasy fossil records to the diversity curves, which indicates 30 the African fossil record dominates the first pulse of diversification and the South 31 American fossil record exclusively compose the second pulse of diversification.

Stigall This study examines morphological diversification of the late Oligocene ampullariid species from the Rukwa Rift Basin of Tanzania. Six new species of ampullariids are described, including five species of Lanistes and one species of Carnevalea. The high-spired Lanistes species described record the earliest appearance of this morphotype in the fossil record. Carnevalea santiapillai records the first appearance of this genus outside the Eocene of Oman. Paleoecological interpretations suggest a paludal to lacustrine ecology for C. santiapillai and a lacustrine ecology for L. nsungwensis. Lanistes songwensis and L. songweellipticus were interpreted as fluviate species whereas
