31.12.2011 EUBORDERREGIONS NEWSLETTER 2 New Year’s Message from EUBORDERREGIONS If 2011 is anything to go by, 2012 promises to be a tumultuous year in economic, political and social terms. Much of our attention will be directed towards Europe and the troubles of the Eurozone, but the shifts that are taking place are obviously of international importance and touch all corners of the globe. Traditional politics “as usual” might not be enough to guide us through the creative, complex but often frightening unruliness that is our contem- porary world. Part of the raison d’etre of EUBORDERREGIONS is the proposition that co- operation, dialogue and openness are still our main resources for social and economic devel- opment and dealing with the challenges of diversity. During 2012, this project will explore the potentials of local development strategies based on economic, social and political networking beyond the EU’s formidable external frontiers. Although somewhat drowned out by politi- cal messages of fear and controlled borders, local diplomacy has a long and important history of creating inter- cultural dialogue. We here at EUBORDERREGIONS hope for a productive and progressive 2012, both in more in more global terms as well as for all of us individually. Its strategic location and prominence have attracted the attention of many civilisations, past and present, giving rise to the rich history and popularity of ‘The Rock’. In addition to its geographical importance, Gibraltar is just as impressive from a naturalist’s perspective. It boasts many terrestrial and marine species, most of which are protected under the Nature Protection Act 1991, Gibraltar’s pioneering nature conservation legislation. Gibraltar’s climate is Mediterranean, with mild, sometimes wet winters and warm, dry summers. Its terrain includes a narrow coastal lowland to the west, bordering the 426 metre high Rock of Gibraltar. With a terrestrial area of 6.53 km2 and territorial waters extending up to three nautical miles to the east and south and up to the median line in the Bay of Gibraltar, it is of no surprise that Gibraltar’s biological resources are inevitably limited.

The designs reproduce great Renaissance paintings. The Cook Islands Post Office Department stated that these noted works of art were selected for this series to bring out the religious origins of Christmas, and that the great artists of various nationali­ ties were chosen to reflect the universality of the Season. Perhaps the most memorable result was the first to be declared – not only because of the enormity of the consensus expressed, but also because, somewhat counter intuitively, the result came from outside the United Kingdom altogether. Voters in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar—a rocky Mediterranean promontory, ceded to Great Britain by Spain in 1713— expressed an overwhelming 96% support for remaining within the European Union; the single largest majority of any of the returning areas in the EU referendum (Garcia, 2016).     PRESS RELEASE No: 173/2019 Date: 12th March 2019 Twinning Visit to Kingston Jamaica Her Worship the Mayor Kaiane Aldorino Lopez has travelled together with Minister Linares and Rector for St Theresa’s Church and the Shrine of our Lady of Europe, Father Charles Azzopardi, on a reciprocal visit to the city of Kingston, Jamaica. This is to consolidate the Twinning Agreement which took place in Gibraltar on September 2018. During the visit, the delegation attended a special sitting of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation on Wednesday 27th February 2019, where Her Worship was conferred with the Keys to the City of Kingston by His Worship the Mayor, Senator Councillor Delroy Williams. In his remarks His Worship Senator Councillor Delroy Williams pointed out that whilst the Second World War brought the two cities together, we share so much more than just colonial history. We share music, culture and cities filled with similar issues. The delegation were special guests at the rededication and wreath laying ceremony of the newly refurbished Clock Tower Memorial to the fallen soldiers of WW2. Her Worship the Mayor took a prominent part in the ceremony where she gave a keynote address emphasising how the people of Kingston took in the Gibraltarian evacuees, she thanked them for the way in which they welcomed them and how they still cherished parts on what is now the campus of the University of West Indies where relics and buildings are being preserved as a reminder of the place where the Gibraltarians lived. Dr Suzanne Francis Brown curator of the UWI Mona Museum who has written about the life of the Gibraltarian evacuees, also addressed the dignitaries present and stated how life was in the Gibraltar camp.

In einem marokkanischen Restaurant speisten wir bei 12-Sterne-Kurier orientalischer Musik und Vorführungen. Der Gang durch die engen Bazarstraßen Gnadenweiler Bote der Bruderschaft war interessant, aber viel zu lang, so dass wir mit der letzten Fähre erst wieder in Tarifa ankamen und noch eine Dreiviertelstunde mit dem Bus zu fahren hatten. Maria Mutter Europas Dieser Tag war zu lang und zu anstrengend und wenig informativ. Nr. 16/Dezember 2014 Der nächste Tag ließ sich besser an. Wir besuchten Jerez de la Frontera, welt- berühmt für die Sherry-Weine. Besuch einer Sherry-Bodega mit Weinprobe und dazugehörenden Käsebrötchen. Wir kamen glücklicherweise rechtzeitig nach dvent und Weihnachten faszinieren durch den Zauber der Geburt und sei- Hause und konnten noch direkt neben unserem Hotel in der dortigen Kirche Aner gespannten Erwartung. Wir sagen zwar, mit unserer leiblichen Geburt zur Schmerzhaften Muttergottes in Klein-Genua den Abschieds-Gottesdienst fei- beginnt unser Leben, doch mit der Taufe beginnt unser Leben in der Gnade ern. In großer Ergriffenheit streichelte ich am Ende der Hl. Messe das Kleid der Gottes und erst mit der Berufung wird unser wirkliches geistliches Leben gebo- spanisch geschmückten Marienfigur, welche bei Prozessionen mitgetragen wird, ren. In diesem Moment der herabfallenden und offenen Beziehung zum Schöp- wandte mich der Sakristei zu und rief voller Überraschung einen Jubelschrei aus, fer erfahren wir etwas von der Existenz und Größe Gottes und werden durch denn wer stand unter dem Sakristei-Türrahmen: Der Generalvikar Charles Az- ihn befähigt, diese Kraft des Lebens weiter zu geben. In der Adventszeit sind wir zopardi, der uns noch einen Abschiedsbesuch machen wollte.
