1001209 Chicago Cubs Cubs immediately put Zack Greinke on defensive in 4-2 win over Diamondbacks Mark Gonzales The Cubs weren't about to let perennial Cy Young Award candidate Zack Greinke get comfortable Saturday night. They pounced on Greinke for four hits in the first inning en route to three runs and a cozy 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks. "We didn't want to let him settle in," Anthony Rizzo said. "We tried to be aggressive right out of the chute and did a good job of getting those runs early. He ended up settling in against us and doing what he does to everyone. But those runs were huge for us." Rizzo delivered the big hit — a single up the middle on a 1-2 count to score Jason Heyward — and Miguel Montero capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left field. All the action from Chase Field. "I still think the power is prevalent," manager Joe Maddon said. "But we're seeing more of the line-drive base hit, making an out to score a run kind of offense, which I love. If you can combine those things, that's what's going to help you at the end of the year. "You get to playoff time, to be able to move the baseball in counts matters a lot, as opposed to swinging and missing and coming back to the dugout." Maddon has been extremely impressed that the batters are exchanging information on a frequent basis. "I always say we're up there together," Rizzo said. "When someone's hitting, we're all in the box with him. That's the way the team is. It' a good mix." Prime pitching: Kyle Hendricks credited Miguel Montero with clever pitch selection that kept the Diamondbacks' hitters off balance. Hendricks fooled slugger Paul Goldschmidt on a 78-mph curve that Goldschmidt tapped back to the mound for the final out of the sixth. "That was the best one I've thrown in a long time," Hendricks said. One night after Goldschmidt hurt the Cubs with a game-tying single, closer Hector Rondon gained some measure of revenge by striking out Goldschmidt on a 90-mph changeup for the first out of the ninth. "That was as good as Rondon has been all spring," Maddon said. Chicago Tribune LOADED: 04.10.2016

1001210 Chicago Cubs Newcomer Adam Warren provides a bridge in Cubs' 4-2 win Mark Gonzales As well as Kyle Hendricks pitched Saturday night in his 2016 debut, manager Joe Maddon couldn't take any more chances after Brandon Drury hit a double with two out in the seventh inning. So Maddon called upon Adam Warren to preserve a two-run lead in his Chicago Cubs debut. Not only did Warren bail Hendricks out of a jam, but Warren retired all four batters to preserve the Cubs' 4-2 win over the . "It was perfect, and you can see how he’s calm in that moment," Maddon said of Warren, who came to the Cubs in a trade from the involving infielder . Had the Cubs extended their lead in the ninth, Maddon would have allowed Warren to pitch another inning. Nevertheless, Warren provided the Cubs with a solid effort as Pedro Strop rested one night after allowing a game-tying single to Paul Goldschmidt in a 3-2 loss. Warren's ability to retire all four batters he faced prevented Goldschmidt from coming to the plate representing the tying run. Hector Rondon took care of business by striking out Goldschmidt on a 90 mph changeup to start the ninth. Warren could a role as big as any reliever in the Cubs' bullpen because of his ability to start as well as relieve and keep the ball down. He has allowed only 14 home runs in 211 1/3 innings dating back to 2014, and that skill could come in handy at Wrigley Field later this season. Chicago Tribune LOADED: 04.10.2016

1001211 Chicago Cubs Kyle Schwarber ready to attack lengthy rehabilitation Mark Gonzales Kyle Schwarber sensed something was significantly wrong when he returned to the Cubs' hotel Thursday night and realized his left knee was swollen. "But I didn't see two tears coming," Schwarber said Saturday night of his season-ending injury. Schwarber admitted he was disappointed after learning of the tears in his anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament that will sideline him for the rest of the season with surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation awaiting him. "You've got to face it head on," Schwarber told reporters in his first public comments since an MRI Friday revealed the damage. "I'm not going to back down from it. I want to be there for the team whenever I can. I want to be positioned to make myself bigger, faster and stronger for next year." Schwarber will accompany his teammates to Chicago after Sunday's series finale with the Diamondbacks, and he will meet soon with team orthopedist Stephen Gryzlo to determine when he will undergo surgery. "My spirits won't get down," Schwarber said. "I know it's a long road. There are going to be ups and downs. I've just got to keep a good attitude with this and cheer these guys along. It's going to be a fun ride and for me to be around, it's going to be a pleasure." Schwarber, 23, seems ready for a long rehabilitation that could take him deep into the winter because it involves two torn ligaments. Cubs' Dexter Fowler talks about the collision that injured teammate Kyle Schwarber. "I look at it as I've got a whole year to prepare for a new season," Schwarber said. "There will be bumps in the road, but it's not like I'm preparing for the season with three months to go. I've got a whole year, so I've got a feeling I'll be coming back even better." Schwarber declined to set next spring training as a target date for his return. "My goal is to be healthy and help the team win, so wherever that timetable puts me is where I'll be," Schwarber said. "I'm going to push myself as far as I can to be back healthy 100 percent. Wherever that timetable leads me, I'll be ready." After learning of the severity of the injury, Schwarber said he was disappointed for 30 minutes and appreciated the immediate support of teammates and manager Joe Maddon. "They definitely brought my spirits up," Schwarber said. "It's not the way you plan your season going by playing two games, and now you're out for the season. Now I have to be there for them in a different way — not on the field but whenever I can be." While Schwarber suffered the brunt of the injury, center fielder Dexter Fowler revealed Saturday that his hip was sore after colliding with Schwarber in what he described as a "car crash." "That's a tough guy over there, and I was hurting myself," said Fowler, who referred to the 6-foot, 235-pound Schwarber as his "little brother." "But my concern was if he was all right. For him to be on the ground that long had to be serious." Chicago Tribune LOADED: 04.10.2016

1001212 Chicago Cubs Cubs' Kyle Schwarber: No regrets about effort on season-ending play Mark Gonzales Chicago Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber had no regrets about the play that led to his season-ending left knee injury Thursday night. "I felt bad for 30 minutes," Schwarber told reporters Saturday in his first public comments since colliding with center fielder Dexter Fowler and suffering tears in the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament. "I'd definitely feel bad if I did something wrong or wasn’t playing hard or something in that nature. "But me and Dex did everything we possibly could to catch that ball. Literally everything had to be on time for this to happen, and it just was. "My spirits won’t get down. I know it’s a long road, there’s going to be ups and downs. I just got to keep a good attitude with this and cheer these guys along. It’s going to be a fun ride and for me to be around, it’s going to be a pleasure." Cubs' Dexter Fowler talks about the collision that injured teammate Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber, 23, who hit 16 home runs in 69 games and five in the 2015 playoffs, will accompany the Cubs to Chicago following Sunday's series finale at Arizona. But a date for surgery hasn't been finalized yet. Schwarber feared his injury was serious the night before the MRI taken Friday revealed the tears and a left ankle sprain. "I knew it was something significant because my knee was swollen," Schwarber said. "I have a pretty good feel for my body. I knew something was probably wrong, but I didn’t see two tears coming. "You got to face it head on. I’m not going to back down from it. I want to be there for the team whenever I can, I want to be positioned to (make me) bigger, faster, nd stronger for next year." Schwarber said he appreciated support from fans, the Cubs' front office and players that included Jay Bruce and Michael Lorenzen from the Cincinnati Reds. Schwarber concurred with Fowler, who said that the collision resembled a "car crash." "That's a big man over there, but you respect the hell out of him for the way he handled it," Fowler said. 1001213 Chicago Cubs Decision to end Dodgers rookie's chance at history a 'no-brainer' Paul Sullivan When Dodgers rookie Ross Stripling was removed from a no-hitter after 71/3 innings Friday night in San Francisco, Giants fans booed manager Dave Roberts for depriving them of a chance to see history. Only one pitcher had thrown a no-hitter in his major-league debut, and that was back on the last day of the 1892 season when Reds starter Bumpus "Moonshine" Jones no-hit the Pirates. There was no debate about pitch counts back then, of course, and no Twitter for outraged fans to question Roberts' sanity. Stripling, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2014 and had never pitched above the Double-A level, said he agreed with Roberts' decision. And Roberts, a rookie manager, was not the least bit apologetic afterward. "Under no circumstance am I going to even consider putting his future in jeopardy," Roberts said. "For me, it was a no-brainer." Stripling's parents agreed with the decision too. Roberts told reporters Saturday that he talked with Stripling's father, who thanked him for having his son's best interests in mind. While others may question Roberts for depriving Stripling of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because the rookie reached a 100-pitch limit, most understood the reasoning. White Sox manager Robin Ventura, informed that his old friend Roberts had taken the rookie out of the no-hitter, cracked: "Well, that's obviously wrong." But Ventura turned serious: "You'd love to see a kid get it (but) you're not going to go out there and jeopardize" his career. The next hitter, Trevor Brown, belted a game-tying two-run homer, and the Giants won on Brandon Crawford's solo blast in the 10th. Still, Indians ace Corey Kluber agreed that Roberts had no choice to but remove Stripling. "In that situation, he's coming off an injury, he didn't throw a lot last year, and they said the most pitches he threw in spring training was 70-something," Kluber said Saturday. "So that's a pretty big jump from 70 to 100, and if you're going to let him keep going after that … yeah, he might not have that opportunity again, but he'd also probably like to have a longer career and not get hurt again. But you get only one major-league debut in your life, and Stripling's chance to go down in history evaporated when he was removed from the game. "Well, there's no guarantee he would've had a no-hitter either," Kluber said. "It's hard to question (any manager) in that spot because he's looking out for the player. "It's not like he's just making a rash call. There was some (well-informed) thought that went into that." Would a manager have taken the kid out, say, 10 years ago when pitch counts weren't so strict? "Maybe not," Kluber said. "... But it was a pretty solid debut anyway. Obviously getting a no-hitter would've been unbelievable, but I don't know if it would've been worth it." In May, Kluber had a chance to beat the single-game record of 20 — held by Kerry Wood, Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson — when he had 18 against the Cardinals entering the ninth inning of a 2-0 game. But manager Terry Francona lifted Kluber for his closer after 113 pitches, depriving him of a chance to go down in the record book. "At that point in time, it's a perfect situation to bring your closer into the game," Kluber said. "I didn't question it once. It's a decision where you're trying to win the game." Kluber "didn't have any idea" he was close to the record at the time he was removed but said it didn't matter. "I wasn't out there trying to get 20 or break (the record)," he said. "It's cool to know I had a bunch of them, but that's not what's on my mind." As Chris Sale took the mound for the Sox on Saturday, Ventura was asked if he would hesitate to take Sale out of a no-hitter if he reached his pitch limit. "If Sale had something like (Stripling) today, he's not coming off Tommy John, nor is it his debut, so he would be in there," Ventura said. "I would give you an opportunity to see (a no-hitter). I hope I'm put in that position." Shark week: Jeff Samardzija had a subpar 2015 season with the White Sox but still turned his 4.96 earned-run average into a five-year, $90 million contract with the Giants. General manager Bobby Evans said they valued Samardzija's career numbers over last year's performance. "We expect that there will be something learned from last year," Evans said. "But we also think the benefit of a Buster Posey, the benefit of (pitching coach) Dave Righetti and (bullpen coach) Mark Gardner, the benefit of AT&T Park and the benefit of a supporting cast where he's not necessarily expected to be the No. 1 or No. 2 guy. … "There is a lot to learn from last year but also a lot to learn from what he did well in 2014 that made him so successful. Those elements combined allowed us to go out and make the investment." Samardzija didn't communicate well with Sox pitching coach Don Cooper, who took the blame for the disappointing numbers. "I know my successes … and I know ones I consider failures, and that's one that I look at, 'man, I failed,'" Cooper said at SoxFest. Samardzija didn't impress in his Giants debut Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks in 51/3 innings against the Brewers in a no-decision. "We're glad to have him," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's got a lot of personality, a lot of fire. We love his big arm. ... We look at him as a guy who's going to help strengthen this rotation." 1001214 Chicago Cubs Saturday recap: Cubs 4, Diamondbacks 2 Mark Gonzales The Cubs pounced on 2015 Cy Young Award runner-up Zack Greinke for three runs in the top of the first inning that loomed large in a 4-2 victory. Kyle Hendricks, making his 2016 debut, pitched 6 2/3 innings of four-hit ball. At the plate: Ben Zobrist seemed invigorated by the prospect of facing Greinke. Zobrist hit a single in the first and scored the Cubs’ second run, and he ripped a double to center field to score Dexter Fowler to extend the Cubs’ lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Zobrist is 8-for-25 lifetime (.320) against Greinke. On the mound: Reliever Adam Warren made his Cubs debut and retired all four batters he faced. Warren entered in relief of Hendricks and retired pinch-hitter Phil Gosselin on a fly to right with a runner at third to end the seventh. In the field: Shortstop Addison Russell made a diving catch of a line drive by Paul Goldschmidt in the fourth. Zobrist leaped at second to catch a line drive by Nick Ahmed to end the sixth. Key number: .321 – Miguel Montero’s lifetime average against Greinke The quote: “(Greinke) has got really good stuff. He knows when to pull the velocity out of his back pocket when he wants it.” – Joe Maddon Up next: at Diamondbacks, Sunday, 3:10 p.m., WGN Chicago Tribune LOADED: 04.10.2016

1001215 Chicago Cubs Cubs season still can be stuff of legends even without Kyle Schwarber David Haugh Once upon a time, Kyle Schwarber hit prodigious home runs farther than the eye could see. They called them Schwarbombs. One of them plopped into the Allegheny River against the Pirates in a winner-take-all National League wild-card game. One of them landed on the top of the scoreboard at Wrigley Field against the Cardinals in the National League Divisional Series and they encased it in glass. One of them shattered a windshield during spring training in Arizona, and they auctioned off the damaged car part for $900. Exactly 16 Schwarbombs last summer, several of them Ruthian, including five in the postseason, helped make the Cubs one of the most alluring stories in baseball and Schwarber part of the lore of Wrigleyville. When will Schwarber blast his next legendary ? To the chagrin of Chicagoans, nobody knows for sure after Friday's deflating news — except it won't be in 2016. North Siders have squirmed since the Cubs confirmed Schwarber tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee, requiring surgery that ends his season after two games and four homerless at-bats. The Cubs indeed will miss the electricity of Schwarber's bat and the majesty of his home runs. Everybody will miss feeling one swing away from another epic story every time Schwarber stepped to the plate. Instinct will tempt Cubs fans who recognize the feelings of despair to fear the worst. But even without Schwarber, they still can expect the best season of their lifetimes. The Cubs might be slightly less fun to watch without a player who came across as the pro athlete you most wanted to share a beer with, but they won't necessarily win any fewer games. The Cardinals won 100 games last year after losing ace Adam Wainwright in April and that still represents a realistic regular-season goal for the Cubs, whose roster offers enough versatility to withstand even a loss as great as Schwarber's. Wainwright and the Cardinals offer a recent, relevant historical reference. Only baseball masochists will look deeper into the Cubs past for cues. This has no parallel with Rick Sutcliffe getting injured in 1985, the beginning of the end of a season with similarly high expectations. This has nothing to do with curses, billy goats or black cats. This is neither ominous nor foreboding. This is simply but painfully the latest example of sports happening. Sometimes sports suck, as much as the T-shirts say the Cubs try not to. Injuries occur. Adversity strikes. From developing a surplus of young talent such as Jorge Soler and Javier Baez to re-signing Dexter Fowler, at least the Cubs can feel good about their ability to overcome it. They prepared for a problem such as this. Soler could blossom. Or Baez can play second base and Ben Zobrist, Mr. Super Utility Man, can shift to left. Or Kris Bryant always can move to the outfield and Tommy La Stella can play third base. Or Matt Szczur might stay hot. Or somebody else could emerge. Whatever they are and whoever they involve, good options exist for the Cubs. Joe Maddon, the MacGyver of baseball managers, has a knack for doing more with less. Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Jason Heyward have gone nowhere. Nor have pitchers Jake Arrieta or Jon Lester. The Schwarber injury doesn't threaten to change the direction of a franchise the way Derrick Rose's torn ACL in April 2012 did for the Bulls, or even alter the course of a season like Jay Cutler's broken thumb in November 2011 did for the Bears. It likely only delays the development of the 23-year-old Schwarber, the kind of committed athlete likely to immerse himself in rehabilitation and return in the spring of 2017 as one of the game's most dangerous young power hitters. What this setback does for Schwarber's future as a catcher remains more uncertain. Catchers can recover from major knee surgeries; Wilson Ramos of the Nationals tore his ACL and meniscus in July 2012 at the age of 25 and returned as Washington's regular catcher. Victor Martinez of the Tigers, who caught 853 major-league games from 2002-2011, missed the 2012 season after ACL reconstruction surgery and came back as Detroit's designated hitter. It all depends on the individual player and team. A Yankees rookie named Mickey Mantle once tore his ACL and returned to have a pretty decent career in the outfield. Ideally, the National League will adopt the DH rule that fits Schwarber's skills. In reality, Schwarber figures to spend the next nine months regaining strength in his knee and improving his agility as an outfielder. He occasionally lumbers after fly balls in left field, which isn't his natural position, but blaming the collision with Fowler on inexperience or awkwardness seems ill-advised the more you watch the replay that ruined so many Cubs fans' nights. In baseball, some hits just have eyes, and this one off the bat of Diamondbacks shortstop Jean Segura fell in a spot that put Schwarber in a position that would have challenged the most graceful and experienced of outfielders. "Thank you all for the encouragement,'' Schwarber tweeted Saturday. "This is a test of character and plan to attack it head on. This team is special and fun to watch.'' The legend of Kyle Schwarber still can have a happy ending. And so can the Cubs season. Chicago Tribune LOADED: 04.10.2016

1001216 Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field remake: Now it's beautiful outside, too Blair Kamin For decades, the phrase "beautiful Wrigley Field" didn't fit the ballpark's exterior, which was covered in gray concrete panels that could have been lifted from a 1960s parking garage. The ballpark only became beautiful when fans entered the seating bowl and the emerald green field and ivy-covered outfield walls burst on them, like Eden redux. But when the Cub faithful return to their bittersweet shrine for Monday's opening night, they will witness something new — or, rather, something old: a Wrigley Field whose exterior is being restored to the way it looked in the 1930s, complete with ornamental grill work topped by elegant sunburst patterns. The changes, the most visible part of the multiyear, $500 million remake of the major leagues' second-oldest ballpark, will no doubt come as a shock, particularly because they bring back terra cotta roofing to Wrigley's street-level facade. Some sidewalk superintendents are comparing the new look to a Taco Bell. "Can I order a chicken burrito supreme there?" one wrote on Twitter. Hold the snark. Though it remains unfinished and its mix of historical styles is occasionally off-key, the facade revamp seems likely to go down as one of the most welcome aspects of Wrigley's controversy-wracked reinvention. You can appreciate it even if you don't know Jake Arrietta from Jake LaMotta. Wrigley, after all, is a public presence, one that soars like a cathedral above the humble three-flats and stores around it. Now it gives something to the street, and to passersby, as all good urban buildings should. Designed by Chicago architects VOA Associates, which worked with the historic preservation specialists at the city's Harboe Architects, the changes are visible in an arc that extends from the ballpark's newly restored art deco marquee to the Clark Street facade. The makeover of the Addison Street frontage won't be finished until opening day of 2018 because it must occur in tandem with structural upgrades on that side of Wrigley, VOA's Mike Toolis and Andy Pigozzi said Friday. While the different exterior treatments will be a temporary visual mismatch, the equivalent of a baseball player wearing a home white jersey and away gray pants, they offer a telling "before" and "after" contrast. The "before," on Addison, reflects the 1960s, the apogee of architectural modernism, when decoration was out of fashion, color wasn't cool and heavy-handed concrete blighted everything from parking garages to public housing. Workers hoist the restored Ernie Banks statue on April 8, 2016, as it waits to be installed on the west side of Wrigley Field in Chicago near the stadium's main entrance. Terra cotta roofing has returned to the street-level facade and sunburst-patterned steel grill work is also back. (Jose M. Osorio / Chicago Tribune) The "after," on Clark, brings back ornamental flourishes that appeared in the 1920s, when office towers that mixed tradition with modernity were remaking American skylines, and persisted through the 1930s, which is viewed as the ballpark's golden age. To their credit, the Cubs and VOA have faithfully brought back the historic touches, which were designed by the powerhouse Chicago firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst & White and literally built upon the design of Wrigley's chief original architect Zachary Taylor Davis. Take the grill work, which replaces the ugly chain-link fencing. Made of galvanized steel (not wrought-iron, as some have reported), it is essentially a handsome fence adorned with diamond patterns and a central arch whose pointed spikes radiate outward like the rays of the sun. In contrast to the concrete panels, which form a blunt wall, the grill work creates a delicate decorative screen that fills in the ballpark's muscular exposed steel frame. It's a front, not a back, one that should let the energy of the ballpark spill out onto the street. From bleachers to structural details, work continues ahead of opening day at Wrigley Field. At street level, a roofline of natural-toned terra cotta — not garish fast-food orange — crowns the ticket booths and projects outward, like a small porch, beneath the marquee. It's as though Wrigley, the classic neighborhood ballpark, has been reimagined as a bigger version of the bungalows that proliferated on the city's fringes in the early 20th century. The terra cotta, incidentally, was procured from the same Ohio company, Ludowici Roof Tile, that supplied Wrigley's original tile. Such attention to detail reveals that Wrigley's exterior is being transformed from a utilitarian container to a place that ushers in fans with some ceremony. Kudos to the Cubs' owners, the Ricketts family, for undertaking that transformation, though it must be noted that the moves make smart business sense (and cents). The Cubs stand to get tens of millions of dollars in federal historic preservation tax credits, considerably reducing their costs. Still, there are points of contention and tension on both the design and security fronts. Construction workers prepare Wrigley Field for opening day on April 5, 2016. (Anthony Soufflé/Chicago Tribune) Colors are subjective, but to my eyes, at least, the subdued, earth-toned palette of the grill work and tile roofing is out of sync with the bright red marquee, a highlight of the art deco changes made to the ballpark in the 1930s. This dissonance could have been avoided if the Cubs had gone back to the marquee's original colors of green and gold. But the team decided not to part with the marquee's iconic red, and who can blame them? At least the side of the marquee facing away from Clark and Addison will now be visible from within the ballpark and will have the original green and gold colors. And while the changes begin to restore Wrigley's once-graceful exterior, there is no escaping modern security mandates, as the presence of new metal detectors outside the ballpark reveals. Team officials said that granted the Cubs a one-year extension on putting in the security devices, also called magnetometers. "We don't have enough room inside the park, so the magnetometers will be staged at the front of each of the entrances," Crane Kenney, the Cubs' president of business operations said Friday. "You will get 'magged' before you actually show your tickets." There is still much more to be done before the renovation's scheduled completion in 2020. A new, see-through outfield sign will soon join the two video boards that were introduced last year. A Cubs office building along Clark is under construction. And myriad structural and interior upgrades are planned. Like the Cubs, who boast a stacked lineup and have been picked by some to win the National League pennant this year, the long-overdue upgrade of Wrigley's facade shows great promise. But we'll have to wait till next year (and three years after that) for the final outcome of this architectural saga. Nevertheless, this latest project is a hit: When it comes to Wrigley's front, the beauty is back. Chicago Tribune LOADED: 04.10.2016

1001217 Chicago Cubs With Schwarber out, Soler gets shot to win everyday job in left Gordon Wittenmyer PHOENIX – Just when it looked like Jorge Soler had played himself to the far margins of the Cubs’ lineup plans in the early season, the sophomore slugger got a new lease on left field. If there was such a thing as a beneficiary of Kyle Schwarber’s season-ending knee injury, it’s Soler’s personal opportunity to claim an everyday spot in the lineup he otherwise seemed to have no shot of earning. “If he wants to take it and just run with it, it’s going to be there for him to do it,” manager Joe Maddon said. “If not we still have other guys we’ll utilize, too.” With Jason Heyward signed to play right field, and Dexter Fowler returning in February to play center, Soler struggled with the move from right to left field during spring training and didn’t look good at times on the bases or at the plate. When it comes to the new chance and fresh start? “I’m ready,” he said (with coach Franklin Font helping translate). In his first two starts since Schwarber’s injury, Soler had a single Friday against left-hander Robbie Ray and was hitless in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks with two strikeouts (seven pitches total) against former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke (0-2). The Cubs were fine without his production on this night, with Kyle Hendricks (1-0) pitching 6 2/3 impressive innings in his season debut, and the Cubs scoring three quick runs off Greinke in the first. Soler hits the ball as hard as anyone on the team, but struggles against breaking stuff. Maddon said he looks for progress more than instant impact. “He’s the kind of guy that’s dripping with projection,” Maddon said of the 6-4, 215-pound Soler. “He’s got the kind of body everybody’s looking for in any major sport. Got a great arm, runs well. And then you’ve got this prodigious power.” That’s what drew the Cubs to him as a 19-year-old free agent from Cuba, eventually signing him to a nine-year $30 million major league deal. More recently, he looked like a strong candidate to be traded with the redundancy of hitting talent up and down the Cubs’ 2016 lineup. His big start to the playoffs last fall seemed to increase his value, as he reached base in nine consecutive plate appearances – admitting later that he focused more in the playoffs than regular season. Schwarber’s injury would seem to put an abrupt end to any trade talk anytime soon, assuming the Cubs see that dripping projection start to emerge in some semblance of that player from October. If nothing else, it seems to put Soler at an early crossroads in his career. “I wouldn’t say it’s critical. We have a lot of faith in this guy,” Maddon said. “I think it’s eventually going to show up. I don’t want him to go into it thinking it’s kind of a do-or-die moment for him at all.” Soler is still just 24. Because of injuries, last year’s primary starting right fielder has never played more than last year’s 105 games in any season at any level. Maddon said he plans to be patient with his youth and development, and cautious with his health and workload. As much as anything, Soler’s ability to handle this new opportunity – much less run with it – could come down to the “confidence component that’s really big” with the big right-handed slugger, Maddon said. First baseman Anthony Rizzo quietly took a moment in the clubhouse Friday to encourage Soler after the players got the Schwarber news. “He said be ready to play every day,” Soler said. “I’m ready to try to help the team win.” Maddon said he’s impressed with Soler’s work ethic and that he’s seen recent improvements in his running and fielding. “He’s going to be really good,” Maddon said. “Maybe it’ll happen sooner now.” Chicago Sun Times LOADED: 04.10.2016

1001218 Chicago Cubs Kyle Hendricks out-pitches Zack Greinke as Cubs jump to 4-1 start Gordon Wittenmyer PHOENIX – If this is the way the back end of the Cubs’ rotation is going to pitch all year, they might as well fast-forward the season to October. One night after Jason Hammel allowed just one run in six innings, fifth-starter Kyle Hendricks outpitched $206.5-million Diamondbacks ace Zack Grienke to beat the Diamondbacks 4-2 at Chase Field and run the Cubs’ record to 4-1 with one game left before the team heads home for Monday’s home opener. One full turn through the rotation, the starters are 4-0 with a 2.76 group ERA – and that includes John Lackey’s six runs in six innings Thursday. “I don’t think there’s anything we can’t do, honestly,” said Hendricks, who ran his regular-season scoreless streak to 15 innings (counting 12 in 2015) before the DBacks scored on a two-out wild pitch in the fourth. “I ean, we’ve got all the pieces here. We lost [Kyle] Schwarber, which is big for us. But at the same time, we’ve got plenty of other guys who can step in and fill that. “Our staff did a pretty good job first time through, and now it’s just about keeping it going from here.” Hammel, who struggled the second half of last year, and Hendricks, who was back-and-forth with his mechanics much of 2015, both carried their strong springs into their season debuts. As the four-game series in Arizona opened, Cubs manager Joe Maddon talked about the makeup of his rotation and the importance of the back pair. “I want to believe with the experience that Jason had last year it’s going to help this year, and also I think Kyle gained a lot of confidence based on the conclusion of last season,” Maddon said. “To get a complete, consistent season out of Hammer and Kyle would be the important component.” The Cubs pounced on Greinke – who was coming off a clunker in the season opener — for three runs in the first Saturday night, with Jason Heyward, Ben Zobrist and Anthony Rizzo hitting consecutive one-out singles, and Kris Bryant following with a double off the glove of the diving shortstop. Miguel Montero followed Bryant with a sacrifice fly. Rizzo’s hit was an RBI roller up the middle on a 1-2 changeup he reached for and poked past Greinke. “It was a good pitch, and just one of those things where it found a hole,” Rizzo said. “That’s the game of baseball at its finest right there. … “Those runs were huge for us.” Hendricks did the rest for 6 2/3 innings, using primarily a sinker-changeup combination to strike out five and allow single, two-out runs in the fourth and seventh. “He was outstanding,” Maddon said. “That was just a continuation of spring training for him. He made good pitches all night long – ball down, on the edges. He was really sharp.” One of the few curve balls he threw, made Diamondbacks MVP candidate Paul Goldschmidt look bad swinging for a third strike. “That was the best one I’ve thrown in a long, long time,” he said. “So that gave me a little confidence in that going forward. Hopefully, I can just keep the feel with that.” Hendricks even delivered one of the seven Cub hits against Greinke, an opposite-field single leading off the second. The Cubs have won the last two games in which Greinke pitched against them. The former Cy Young Award winner fell to 4-3 with a 4.01 ERA in nine career starts against the Cubs. He’s 138-92 with a 3.36 ERA against everyone else. Chicago Sun Times LOADED: 04.10.2016 1001219 Chicago Cubs Schwarber on long injury rehab: ‘I’m going to come back better’ Gordon Wittenmyer PHOENIX – Kyle Schwarber didn’t expect the extreme severity of his injury diagnosis Friday, but he also didn’t spend much time feeling bad for himself. “Obviously, I was disappointed for about 30 minutes,” said Schwarber, who spoke publicly Saturday for the first time since being told two full ligament tears in his left knee will require surgery and end his season. Wait. Thirty minutes? “I got to talk to some of the other guys, and they definitely brought my spirits up,” he said. “I could definitely feel bad if I did something wrong, or if I wasn’t playing hard or something of that nature. But me and Dex did everything we possibly could to catch that ball.” That’s center fielder Dexter Fowler, who converged with left-fielder Schwarber in the second inning of Thursday’s game in Arizona, with Schwarber’s left leg absorbing most of the damage from the collision. “You feel like you got in a car crash,” said Fowler, who landed on his hip and remains sore from the crash. “That’s a big man over there. But you respect the hell out of him for the way he handled it. It definitely sucks. He’s a big part of our team, and he’s my little brother over there, too.” Schwarber, the young slugger, whose power ignited the Cubs’ playoff run after his midseason debut, suffered full tears in his ACL and LCL, along with a severely sprained ankle. Surgery hasn’t been scheduled as doctors wait for the swelling to subside enough. Schwarber, who originally was scheduled to remain behind in Arizona for a few days until it was safer to fly, was cleared to return home with the team on Sunday’s charter and is scheduled to meet with team doctors before Monday’s home opener. “I have a pretty good feel for my own body, so I knew something was probably wrong [Thursday night],” Schwarber said. “But I didn’t see two tears coming. “But you’ve go to face it head on. That’s what I’m going to do. I’m not going to back down from it. I want to be pushing to get myself bigger, faster and stronger for next year.” It’s too early for Schwarber to know what his rehab timeline will be, or even where much of it will be. And he can’t know what the leg will ultimately allow him to do when he returns – whether catching, for instance, will be viable by then for the former No. 4 overall draft pick. “It’s way too soon to say, and it all depends on how well the surgery goes, and how well the rehab goes,” team president Theo Esptein said. “If everything goes the way we want it to go with the surgery and rehab, and he comes out the other side with full range of motion, there’s the chance it won’t impact him at all going forward.” Schwarber isn’t thinking about timelines or results, except for this: “I think I’m going to come back better,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of hard work put into this rehab. I look at it as I’ve got a whole year to prepare for a new season. Obviously, there’s going to be some bumps in the road along the way. “I’m going to push myself as hard as I can to be back healthy 100 percent, so wherever that timetable leaves me, I’ll be ready.” Chicago Sun Times LOADED: 04.10.2016

1001220 Chicago Cubs Cubs' Schwarber can learn a lot during rehab By Dave Otto Everyone associated with the Chicago Cubs has painted a positive and upbeat picture in response to Kyle Schwarber's season-ending injury. Based on last year's performance, and the additions of players such as Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist, the Cubs appear to have some flexibility in their everyday lineup. Joe Maddon did a great job last season of plugging players into different positions, and he will already be tested again this year. While this is a significant blow to the club, great clubs find a way to overcome it. And now for Kyle. Hopefully, this will be the biggest obstacle that he has to overcome in his career. The rehab will be long and difficult. And it won't be easy for him to sit and watch his teammates compete. Kyle has indicated to the club that he wants to be with the team during his rehab process, and that's outstanding to hear. The beauty of baseball is you never stop learning. And while there is no substitute for being on the field and living it, there still is a lot to learn. I have heard many coaches (ex-players) say they wished they had coached before they played. Although impossible, I share those sentiments. There are so many tidbits that you pick up while coaching and observing. You wish you could go back in time and apply those learning points to your own playing career. While Kyle will not be a coach this season, he will have the opportunity to observe and learn from a little different perspective. For example: • Learn every pitcher in the league. Each pitcher has tendencies. One might tend to pitch backward, where he throws curveballs/change-ups when behind in the count (2 and 0), and fastballs when ahead in the count (1 and 2). One left-hander might try to pound the ball inside to left-handed power hitters with men on base. There might be an at-bat for Kyle in 2017 when that knowledge comes into play. • Learn every hitter in the league. As a catcher, Kyle has double duty. Not only does he have to learn every pitcher in the league, but he has to figure out how to get hitters out. Every hitter has a hole in his swing, an area in the strike zone (or out of the zone) where you have a good chance of getting him out. There is nothing more valuable to a pitcher than a catcher that is in sync with how you are trying to get hitters out. Kyle will have some time to spend with Cub pitchers and gain a greater understanding of how each pitcher works. Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants suffered a season-ending injury on May 25, 2011. He was 24 years old at the time. The following year, Posey hit .336 and won the NL batting title. Posey and the Giants now have three titles and I imagine Posey hasn't looked back. Kyle Schwarber is 23 years old and had a nice start to his major-league career in 2015. Eventually Kyle will look back on 2016 as a bump in the road for him. It is now time for him to hammer his rehab and learn. I have no doubt that he will. Lester looked sharp: The Cubs have to be pleased with the way Jon Lester pitched in his first start against the Los Angeles Angels. Compared to last April, it looks like Jon has much more command of his pitches. His biggest weapon is the cutter that he runs in on the hands of right-handed hitters. When Lester is dealing, he hammers the inside part of the plate to righties with that cutter, then throws his soft stuff (curveball and changeup) to the outer half of the plate. And in games where he is able to throw the cutter away to righties (back door), forget about it. Game over. • Dave Otto, a standout athlete at Elk Grove High School, pitched from 1987-1994 for four MLB teams, including the Cubs. A former baseball analyst for WGN Radio, FoxSportsNet and Comcast SportsNet Chicago, Otto also is a member of the University of Missouri Hall of Fame. Daily Herald Times LOADED: 04.10.2016
