  • Stock Contractors
STOCK CONTRACTORS Bar T Rodeo’s Fancy Pants, looking 100 percent focused just before bucking off his Round 9 cowboy, was named top saddle bronc of the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, capping a Kerby-Flitton family celebration that started at the PRCA Awards Banquet Nov. 30 when Bar T won the 2011 Remuda Award for providing the best pen of bucking horses at PRCA rodeos. PRCA ProRodeo photo by Greg Westfall Stock Contractors Working behind the scenes from long before the rodeo begins until the last animal is loaded up, stock contractors may be the most overlooked people in rodeo production. While cowboys get most of the recognition, the livestock at PRCA rodeos plays a vital role in the success of the contestants. In roughstock events, the cowboy’s riding ability produces half the score and the animals’ ability to buck powerfully and skillfully earns the other half. For the timed events, stock contractors work to provide cattle of similar size for each event, so that cowboys are tested on their own skills – on a level playing field. The stock contractors’ primary goal is to ensure that the four-legged athletes of professional rodeo are healthy, well-fed, properly cared for and fit to perform. This job includes tasks familiar to all ranchers: breeding livestock with the desired characteristics, loading and transporting animals safely, providing veterinary care and supervising handling. Rodeo stock contractors also have sport-specific jobs, including working behind the chutes to ensure safety for both people and animals, caring for animals during the rodeo itself – even handling public relations for the sport’s animal superstars.

  • “Farmed and Dangerous”
LancerThe Post May Volume 5 Lancer Post 2014 The Beef With Chipolte By Dimitri Nesbitt Post Staff Writer Occasionally, one has the first-hand experience of harnessing the power of the Internet, and Eastern Wyoming College played host to one such person this past Wednesday night. Greg Peterson, a member of the YouTube phenomenon Peterson Farm Bros., visited the college to discuss “Advocating Agriculture through Social Media.” He joins his brothers Nathan and Kendal in producing parody videos of popular songs titled “Farmer Style” and “I’m Farming and I Grow It” modeled after international hits “Gangnam Style” and “Sexy and I Know It” respectively. In addition to contributing to pop culture, the Peterson brothers have become spokesmen for issues on agriculture, made sensitive through Chipotle’s aggressive campaign against industrial farming and its upcoming “Farmed & Dangerous” TV series. While the Petersons agree with Chipotle’s marketing against “inhumane” and the “unsustainable nature of industrial farming,” the brothers have launched a blog (The Peterson Farm Blog) in disagreement with how Chipotle defines and portrays “family farms” and what humane and ethical agricultural behavior consists of. As 5th generation Kansas farmers, the Peterson brothers write that “our farm is quite large, with an operation of over 1,000 head, and yes, we raise our livestock “conventionally.” That means our cattle are confined in pens, antibiotics are given to “Farmed and Dangerous” revive them when they are sick, and hormones are administered to them to promote healthy growth.” By Nikki Dunovsky This reality, the Petersons say, is the base of what Post Staff Writer Chipotle is discouraging when claiming that it is Since the start of social media through the Internet, people have been able to communicate differently.

Horses and Humans: The Cultural and Biological Effects of the Western Rodeo Elizabeth Brandon ABSTRACT Throughout history different cultures have been greatly impacted by horses and their uses. Today horseback riding is still a very popular sport, and though it is more dangerous than other forms of transportation, such as motorcycle riding, horseback riding is still used in entertainment, occupational, and leisure activities. Saddles have long been an important piece of equipment for riding. As the horse became a mode of transportation, many cultures had their own saddle style, but today there are two prominent saddle styles, the western and english styles. The western saddle style is used more for leisure, occupational, and rodeo riding. The research makes it clear that riders can be affected by injury from this riding style.

The Dance of the Comedians examines standup comedy—particularly its ramifications for the presidency and Americans’ perceptions of that institution—as a uniquely compelling form of cultural performance. Part ceremonial ritual and part playful improvisation, the performance of political comedy in its diverse forms became a potent site of liminality that empowered all of its constituents—the comic, the audience, and the object of the joke—to reexamine and renegotiate the roles of all concerned. It is this tripartite bond of reciprocal
