Sirs, Divan, Nobles All,

On behalf of the entire Divan, we wish everyone Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all of the Nobles and ladies. Remember that for this month everyone has a little Irish in them. Have fun, and enjoy yourselves, be safe at all of the parades and events for the month. Please remember to wish my Shrine Father Illustrious Dennis Kelley a happy St. Patty’s Day!

Thank you to everyone who came out for the Potentate’s Presentation Ball. I hope ev- eryone had a wonderful time and enjoyed the band AllMixedUp as much as Terry and I did. What a band, loved that brass!

Circus, Circus, Circus!!!! IT IS HERE!!!! Everyone, please come out have a good time and make time to help out. Please see your unit’s coordinator for the Circus and help by volunteering. If everyone signed up for one show, then everyone will be able to enjoy the Circus and not need to work every show. Enjoy the fellowship in Tent City, see a show with your family, and volunteer to help. If your unit, club, or committee does not have a circus coordinator or novelty booth contact Wally Bowmen, he can use help or see Ron Reynolds for an assignment. There is always some- thing you can do to help, and I guarantee you will have a good time. Get involved, have fun, and support Moolah’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

Spring is right around the corner, as we say goodbye to old man winter and the season of renewal emanates forth, it is time to renew your dedication to your Lodge and Shrinedom. I ask every Noble to grab a “Just One” card, fill it out with someone’s information you think would make a great Shriner/Mason, and turn it into the office.

Terry and I wish everyone a beautiful spring, and please stay safe.

Fraternally,

Ill. Sir Russell Georgen

11 12 GIVE TO HEAL THE HURT

Who doesn’t want to support injured troops and their families, abused animals, cancer research, hurricane victims or our church’s most recent charity? Every charity pulls at our heart and purse—all for a good cause. Every Mason who puts on the Fez vows to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children because the Shrine children are our number one priority. We promised, we care, and we are vested for the long haul. Whatever other charities we support along the way, we should always support the Shriners Hospitals for Children first and foremost.

Personally, I am not always able to write a big check every year. Over a year ago I found that I hadn’t written a check to the hospitals in quite a while. It was just a forgetful over- sight. I was active in my club, but as a past president of my local club I was ashamed of my oversight. I hadn’t taken that extra step to donate individually. Because of the lovetoth- erescue.org website, I now give monthly through direct withdrawal. I find that this is truly a reliable, worry-free way to support the hospitals.

Did you know you can also guide the donations of others? For example, funeral goers are often very generous to support charities because grief and a desire to help promotes gen- erosity. So, if you write a preneed funeral plan for yourself, or if you help plan a funeral for a loved-one designate the Shriners Hospitals for Children as the primary charity. Every check helps.

If we look deeper into the lovetotherescue.org website we find three other ways to give to the hospitals: 1) Wills, Trusts and Bequests; 2) Charitable Reminder Trusts; and 3) Charitable Gift Annuities. This website gives great guidance on how to become a donor at passing.

It is good to know that you can purchase an insurance policy naming the Shriners Hospitals as the primary beneficiary. You can also include a charitable donation in your will. My fam- ily will be proud to know I helped the Shrine kids when I die.

I used to hear, “Give till it hurts.” Then I read John 6: 51-58. There I learned the real extent and meaning of what Jesus did for us, and where that statement comes from. Since I am not perfect like Jesus I have decided to at least, “GIVE TO HEAL THE HURT.” Isn’t that what being a Shriner is all about?

Whatever giving option works best for you please give to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Just working in the club is not enough. Please GIVE TO HEAL THE HURT.

If you want 18 to join us for one of our dinners, no reservation needed – just show up!!! Little Dixie Sc When Little Dixie Shrine Club Noble Jeff McCubbins saw the excitement on the little boy’s face, he knew that he had done something special. Jeff is the ‘unknown Shriner’ who doesn’t hand out candy when he rides in a parade – he gives something special instead. This particular day, while riding in the Christmas parade, something told Jeff to be patient and wait. About halfway through the route, Jeff noticed a little boy standing with his family on the sidewalk in downtown Mexico, MO. Jeff did not know the family, but he had a feeling that this was the child, so he stopped his golf cart and handed a small teddy bear to the boy. What joy 2-year-old Keegan Bledsoe had on his face! You see, Keegan was born with microtia atresia, meaning he has an under- developed ear and a missing ear canal. He wears a BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) attached to a headband on his right ear which sends vibrations against the bones in his skull and allows him access to sound. When he gets older, Keegan has the option for cosmetic surgery to construct a prosthetic ear, but in the meantime, he is adjusting quite well. In talking with Keegan’s mother, Kirsten, it was discovered that she herself has a special place in her heart for Shriners as they sponsored her from the ages of 10 - 17 and covered the cost of her medical bills associated with Scoliosis. Later that night, Keegan’s mother posted her appreciation on Facebook.

Jeff too, was born with a hearing impairment and wears hearing aids, so finding Keegan that day was nothing short of Divine Guidance. Jeff enjoys giving the teddy bears. For as long as there are parades, Noble McCubbins will be there with his teddy bears in tow.

Now imagine having the ability, through genetics research, to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem, and treat it accordingly and immediately, easing or ending the potential for a lifetime of medical care and personal struggle.

The availability of individual genetic data can lead to identification of disease-related variations, or gene alterations, which can further lead to better ways to diagnose and treat a condition, and lessen its impact on a child. This research can bring hope to countless children the world over – opening the door for a life full of promise and possibilities.

This genetics-based approach to medical care, known as precision medicine, is more than a hope, or a dream. It is becoming a reality, and one day will even be the norm. With the establishment of its Genomics Institute in Tampa, Florida, Shriners Hospitals for Children has taken a major step toward this goal of understanding the specific – and individual – genetic causes of orthopaedic conditions and disabilities such as clubfoot, scoliosis and osteogenesis imperfecta.

Through sophisticated, next-generation sequencing of DNA samples from our patient population, Shriners Hospitals hopes to gain the understanding needed to create more targeted, efficient and personalized treatments and therapies.

Shriners Hospitals for Children and The Jackson Laboratory (JAX), an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution, have entered into a research affiliation agreement for this project. Investigators at JAX will provide expertise on genomic data analysis tools, specialized knowledge bases and algorithms, and will create research models to validate new discoveries and potential treatments for the targeted conditions.

“We are excited to collaborate with the world-renowned Jackson Laboratory to advance precision medicine and specialized pedi- atric care for the more than 100,000 patients we treat every year,” said Marc Lalande, Ph.D., vice president of research programs, Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Shriners Hospitals is proud to be at the forefront of this next major step toward bringing new hope and healing to children and families the world over.

“Harnessing the power of genomics to understand the basis for orthopaedic and other pediatric diseases is of the utmost im- portance,” said Charles Lee, Ph.D., FACMG, scientific director and professor, The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine. “This research can bring hope to countless families, and we’re looking forward to working with Shriners Hospitals to help children around the world.”

About The Jackson Laboratory

The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution with more than 2,200 employees. Headquar- tered in Bar Harbor, Maine, it has a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, a genomic medicine institute in Farming- ton, Conn., and facilities in Ellsworth, Maine, Sacramento, Calif., and Shanghai, China. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health. 23 SIR KNIGHT AND NOBLE ALLESSANDRO LIBERATI A TRUMPETER WHO TAUGHT US TO 'TRUMPET THE VIRTUES OF SHRINEDOM' By Sir Knight James A. Marples, K.T. - Life member, Mt. Olivet Commandery #12 of Wichita, Kansas --but now a resident of Texas

Most Shrine Centers are noted for their “Shrine Bands” whether a concert-band, marching-band, Dixieland band or other type. Over the years Moolah Shrine has been blessed by its excellent Shrine Band. One primary instrument is the Trumpet, which dates back to ancient days. Primitive examples may date to 1400 B.C., but the more modern versions date from the 14th or 15th Centuries. A trumpet usually has three values to change its pitch.

As a very young boy, I would read my dad’s Masonic and Knight Templar books. I came across the mention of Sir Knight Allessandro Liberati, K.T. (born August 24,1847- November 6, 1927). He died in 1927, at age 80. Although long before my time, he was associated with the Kansas City Star, which was just up the highway from my hometown of Wichita. He was even involved in a serious car accident in Kansas City on June 2, 1903. Newspaper reports at the time said: “An automobile containing Signor Liberati, the Cornet virtuoso, and several prominent businessmen, was struck by a street car today while touring the outskirts of the city. The machine was completely wrecked and all of the occupants were cut and bruised”. His cornet played a prominent role in ‘The Kansas City Star March’.

He believed in hard work and the musical discipline of “Practice, Practice, Practice !!!”. He wanted to perfect the ‘Art of the tone.”. He used a metronome to guide him in tempo, and practiced religiously playing ‘scales’ in all keys --always in a light staccato--- until he could play them with absolute precision, in both time and tune. It is widely-known that Liberati said: “You may think that you play a scale perfectly but try it with a metronome and you will find out that you don’t.” In the year 1886, Sir Knight Liberatti conducted one of the bands at the Twenty-third Conclave of the Knights Templar at St. Louis, Missouri. I loved how Sir Knight Liberati intermingled military and Masonic emblems on his uniform:

Notice at the upper left: The Shriners emblem of Scimitar and Crescent. Below it, instead of ‘the star’ is Sir Knight Liberati’s Knight Templar Cross. Sir Knight and NOBLE Allessandro Liberati, K.T. enriched the world by his cornet-playing and his music-composing. His popularity inspired many Ma- sons, Templars, and Shriners. He wasn’t afraid to display to the world that he was a Templar and a Shriner. As Masons, Templars and Shriners , we need to “toot our own horn --and Trumpet the virtues of Templary among Masons and non-Ma- sons alike.”
