The present Now we have arrived at the present. Natural hair was criticized and labeled as unprofessional for the work environment which leads to wigs, weaves, and relaxers. African women have been forced to fit in the mold dictated by non-minorities in the workplace, keeping their natural hair tucked away. Despite the growth in the black hair industry which has led to more availability of hair products meant for our natural hair and the more online resources on how to style, maintain and repair natural hair, we still need to decolonize our hair. In the West and even here in Kenya, it is rare to see a black woman wearing her natural hair to work. It is even harder for black women who work for international corporations such as the World Bank, their natural hair must be nowhere in sight. We seem to think that natural hair is only for children who can be seen wearing braids and cornrows to school but as we get older we must hide away our kinks and curls to be deemed acceptable by the narrative set by the Western media. It is time black people reclaimed their hair. Our hair is our pride, our culture, and our heritage and we must protect it at all costs.
