Hip 70, out of the Galileo mare Dress Rehearsal, topped the session at $2 million after he was pur- chased by El Capi Racing, a Miami, Fla.-based part- nership whose principals are from South America. Four Star Sales consigned the colt as agent. The second-highest price of $1.2 million was paid by the partnership of John Malone's Bridlewood Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, and Robert La- Penta for a colt out of grade I Spinaway Stakes win- ner Appealing Zophie. As Hip 34, he was consigned by Craig and Holly Bandoroff's Denali Stud. In between those two, Hip 49, out of the Storm Cat mare Carriage Trade, was bought by John Fergu- son for $750,000 from the Hunter Valley Farm con- signment. Tapit stands at Gainesway near Lexington. His 2015 fee was $300,000. The session's 70 sold horses generated a gross of $21,745,000, up 19% from $18,267,000 for the 64 yearlings sold in last year's first session. The aver- age of $310,643 increased 8.8% from $285,422. The $225,000 median was down 3.2% from $232,500 last year. "All in all it was a very solid horse sale," Fasig-Tip- ton president Boyd Browning said. "People continue to gain confidence (in the market). It feels fair. I'll sleep a little better tonight." Browning called the RNA rate "very acceptable" at 18%; 15 horses failed to meet reserves versus seven in last year's first session. "I liked the diversification of the buyers," Brown- ing said. "We had strong international participation tonight." El Capi Racing, a group of South Americans, spent $2 million to buy the sale-topper, a Tapit colt. He's big, strong, strapping, easy-moving, correct, good bone— just overall one of those really uncomplicated horses."
