hat the world was waiting with bated breath for the release of a new movie by little-known director George Lucas in 1977 was in no small T part down to the efforts of Charles Lippincott, the marketing wizard charged with making sure Star Wars would find its audience. The genius of Lippincott, who sadly passed away in May of this year, was that he recognized there was a ready-made fanbase just waiting to be swept up by a space fantasy movie with the scope and grandeur of Lucas’ vision. Thus he began his campaign at San Diego Comic-Con in 1976, with a 35mm slide show of stills in lieu of clips from the unfinished movie, the assistance of Marvel Comics’ Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin to help drum up interest, and a deep well of evident enthusiasm for the project. Star Wars owes much to the groundbreaking work of Lippincott, a visionary in his field described by George Lucas as, “one of the founding pillars of the Star Wars films and phenomenon.”

Star Wars Adventures gets a fresh start this October with the debut of a new issue #1 for the popular comic series. Publisher IDW launched the original Star Wars Adventures in 2017 as a kid-friendly title focused on fun, self-contained stories with dynamically expressive art. The new series still employs the same creative freedom, jumping around in the Star Wars timeline to depict events in any era and in every corner of the galaxy. Familiar faces from the Star Wars movies and the animated series show up regularly, and heroes from the Republic, Rebellion, or Resistance might test their mettle against the villainous agents of the Separatists, the Empire, the First Order, or even the vile Hutt crime bosses who rule the Outer Rim. Community Reach Although Elstree Studios is now half the size that it was when The Empire Strikes Back was made (see sidebar), its remaining layout and buildings would still be familiar to anyone who worked on the movie. Beyond the front gate, the sixties- built administration block bears the studio’s name, beside which an avenue runs past stages 7, 8, and 9 towards the backlot, currently occupied by The Crown’s standing façade of Buckingham Palace, and the George Lucas Stage. As we marvel at the scale of the building, Welsh points out the vast, empty water tank where Moby Dick (1954) was filmed and mentions a special toilet block that was built nearby for the Ewok performers during production of Return of the Jedi. A row of trees separates the backlot from a line of suburban houses, and one wonders what their occupants must make of the exotic sets built just beyond their backyards.

Finally, the melody emphasizes the minor key and generally moves in a downward direction, quite literally oppressing us, just like the Empire. “The Imperial March” is used throughout Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983) as a dark, scary representation of Vader’s power, until his death scene where Williams turns the theme on its head and uses it to make us feel Luke’s sorrow. As Luke removes Vader’s mask, the theme—now in a major key—signifies a son losing a father. Here, Williams opens with violins playing harmonics (a glassy, fragile sound) accompanied by a falling harp pattern. This orchestration reflects Vader’s fragile state. Williams then plays the theme on flutes and clarinets for a warmer, softer tone. Vader dies as Anakin Skywalker, a good man, as indicated by the statement of the melody played, again in the major key, by a horn (Williams’ instrument of choice for heroes). Finally, Williams gives us a lament for Luke’s loss with a harp playing a gentle, major version of the melody. All of these techniques emphasize the sadness of these two characters using a theme originally written to represent power and danger. A section of the “Imperial March” is also present in the sweet, warm theme used for Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The 01 Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005). Williams uses it to hint at Anakin’s fate; the melody’s rhythmic pattern echoes that of “The Imperial March,” subtly using a version of the triad pattern of the melody in the middle of “Anakin’s 01 “The Imperial March” is a Theme”. 01 tar Wars Insider : One of the most talked-about S characters in The Phantom Menace was Jar Jar Binks. How did you feel about the reception he received? Rob Coleman: I remember George Lucas saying to me, “Jar Jar is for the youngest members of the audience, the new kids for whom this will be their first Star Wars film.” He created the character specifically for them. George was completely committed to Jar Jar and I was completely committed to George. I was working for George Lucas on a Star Wars film, so who was I to question him? But when I went to New York City for the film’s premiere to represent Industrial Light & Magic at the international press junket, it started to dawn on me that the press were not favoring Jar Jar. Reviewer after reviewer came in, and a lot of them were very negative about him, which honestly left me feeling kind of down. The following day, I flew back to California with George. I was sitting up in the front and he 02 was sitting at the back of the plane with his publicist [Lynne Hale] and a huge stack of reviews. I was looking kind of glum, and George beckoned me over. He said, “What’s the matter? You look really upset.” I said, “The reviewers just hated our work,” to which he replied, “Whoa, whoa, whoa. What you need to know is that not one reviewer said Jar Jar doesn’t look real. They didn’t say he was badly animated; they didn’t say he looked fake; they just don’t like the character. I didn’t make that character for them—I made it for all the kids around the world. You should be incredibly proud. “I could put you at a table in any mall in America,” he continued, “with a sign saying you were the guy who made Jar Jar Binks, and there would be lines of kids queuing to get your autograph.” I said, “Aw, George, that’s not true,” but years later, I was asked to go to one of the Star Wars Weekends 03
