Chancery judges LABAT HITS THE GROUND RUNNING to hold free legal clinic for low- income citizens Clinic will cover help with divorces, custody issues, bankruptcies and more

As the old quip goes, “Justice may be blind, but it ain’t cheap.” But in Columbus, there may be something to do about that. On Tuesday at the Lowndes County Courthouse, 14th Dis- trict Chancery Court judges Dorothy Colom, Jim Davidson D. Colom and Kenneth Burns will hold a free legal clinic for low-income citizens, with local lawyers pro- viding free legal assistance in a variety of areas. The clinic is one of 49 being held throughout the state in June as a part of national Ac- cess to Justice month, which Davidson is set aside to call attention to the needs of poor Americans as they try to navigate the justice system. Earlier this year, Mississip- pi Supreme Court Justice Bill Waller called for the clinics as a way to honor the designation. “It is vitally important for Burns all citizens to have access to the courthouse,” Waller said in Luisa Porter/Dispatch Staff announcing the clinics. “Mississippi has one Columbus Municipal School District Superintendent Cherie Labat begins her tenure with CMSD. Jason Byrd didn’t think his car could win the Factory Stocks Madness at Columbus Speedway. The Jasper native had a spark plug wire come off during his heat race Friday, but he managed to win. In Saturday’s feature, Byrd’s car started to run hot after the fuel stop on lap 20, and under caution laps, his car would shut off. Byrd always was able to re-start it, but there was no way to tell if the problem would grow under green. Twenty laps later, Byrd crossed the finish line and pocketed $2,500. He led every lap and notched his third feature win of more than $1,000 this season. “The distributor got hot, I guess, and cut the ignition off, but it would crank back up,” Byrd said. “Luckily, we made it through the race.” Making it through the race was a chore for the entire field.
