ISSUE NUMBER 156 - SPRING 2014

Waen-y-Brodlas Lime Kilns The restoration of the lime kilns was briefly mentioned in the Grosvenor Estates report in the last issue and we thought you may be interested to see pictures of the kilns before and after this work.

The “BEFORE” picture below was kindly given to us by Shirley Walls - this is obviously taken on a bright day.

The “AFTER” picture below show the restored lime kilns unfortunately it was a dull overcast day when I walked up to see the kilns and take this picture but you can easily see where the work has been carried out. It is well worth a walk up to see them.

See Page 5 for brief article from the JCB Secretary, Head of Countryside Service, covering the progress from its conception for funding this restoration project. Eds

You will know from the letter from the Trustees of the Halkyn Mountain News in the last issue that this magazine/newsletter has been produced non stop since 1974; that is 40 years.

Our first edition as editors was the Spring Issue of March 2001 that is 13 years ago, a total of 52 issues.

We have enjoyed putting the magazine/newsletter together every quarter and have learnt a lot about the Halkyn Mountain over the years.

However despite us putting various requests, including the Trustees letter in the last issue, for people to join us as editors and help by sharing the task of putting the magazine/newsletter together each quarter, thus allowing us a break, no-one has come forward.

With other commitments that we have now we feel that we can no longer continue to edit every issue and therefore need to let everyone know that regrettably this is the last year that we will be editing the Halkyn Mountain News.

We will produce the Summer, Autumn and Winter issues (June, September and December) 2014. We will be only too happy for anyone who would like to, to join us or take over from us during this time. They can either produce these issues with us or by themselves if they prefer. We would also be available if whoever takes over wants any help or advice in the future.

It has been suggested that the Halkyn Mountain News could be produced by a team people who could meet somewhere; the Blue Bell has been suggested. So whether you would like to edit it as an individual or couple as we have or you would like to be a part of this team please let us know.

We really do hope that someone will come forward to ensure that the Halkyn Mountain News will continue so please if you enjoy it and want it to continue please contact us and we will help you all we can.

Whoever you are, we thank you in anticipation that you will become the next editor(s) of the Halkyn Mountain News and it continues for many years to come.

In our generations and in recent decades there has been a community we have so much that has changed and trend toward the fragmentation of our sense of faded away but we also see signs of renewal in the community and belonging. This is perhaps seen most opening of the churches, the new post-office, the in the closure in recent decades of some of our pubs, restarting of bell-ringing and the life of a new choir as schools churches and shops. My perception (and I well as in so many other ways. Community needs us may well be wrong) is that for many people there is as individuals to work with others, formally or less of a sense of belonging to the local community informally, to bring about positive change for the than perhaps there once was. It may be that I’m simply benefit of us all. I pray for a deepening sense of getting older, or misreading the situation but I do sense community on the Mountain and that for many people there is also a greater feeling of wish you every blessing for this loneliness and isolation.
