  • Asuras and Antagonists in Hindu Mythology
Newsletter Archives www.dollsofindia.com Deified Asuras and Antagonists in Hindu Mythology Copyright © 2019, DollsofIndia India is a land that abounds with legends of multitudes of Gods, Goddesses; apsaras, yakshas and kinnaras; fallen angels; asuras and demons; and the various mythological stories associated with them. According to Hinduism, there are about thirty crore plus Gods and Goddesses; plus countless demigods and divine beings. The interesting thing is that, while most of these Gods and Goddesses have shrines and temples dedicated to their worship, one can also find places of worship dedicated to some of the most negative characters in Hindu mythology, including both asuras and human beings. Most of these characters featuring in Hindu mythology never did much good throughout their lifetimes. However, they attained the high status of moksha (liberation) due to the fact that they were slain by the Gods themselves. Many times, Devis and Devatas took avataras purely with the mission to kill them and thus, destroy that evil affecting the entire universe. From a higher spiritual perspective though, these negative characters and extreme wrongdoers too manifested on earth only to fulfill their karmic goals by taking birth on earth. It is part of their own mission to meet their end at the hands of a God or Goddess, thus ultimately attaining the Lotus Feet of the Lord. In this post, we bring you a feature on some of the most prominent Hindu temples in India, dedicated to the worship of Asuras and other negative characters. But first, let us know who and what Asuras really are.

  • Onam 901/020920 Onam Represents the Accommodative Soul of India
Onam 901/020920 Onam Represents the Accommodative Soul of India Jawhar Sircar New Indian Express, 02 September 2020 Onam that bids farewell is much more than a festival of joy, for it represents the core of the great reconciliatory heart of Hinduism. Most such celebrations recall the victory of a great god or goddess over dark forces personified usually by a demonic Asura. The Ramayana marks the destruction of a Rakshasa while Durga Pujas emphasise the Devi’s triumph over Mahishasura. Where killing Asuras is concerned, it is little Balagopala who gets the prize for the maximum number — from Putana to terrible Asuras like the whirlwind Trinavarta, the craneBakasura, the serpent Aghasura, the ferocious bat Vyomasura, Keshi the horse and more. As an adult, he slew Narakasura as well. The point is the Asura is invariably portrayed as evil who engages the divinity in a mortal combat and the latter has to really struggle to overpower him. The only approved memory we are programmed to carry is hatred for the defeated demon. Not so in Kerala. Though Mahabali came from an impeccable Asura lineage, he just does not fit into such an antagonistic bracket. True, his great grandfather, Hiranyakashipu was a terror until he was vanquished by Narasimhama, but his grand-father, Prahlada, was a Vishnu-worshipping Asura — though he too suffered because of the jealousy of the gods. According to the Kedara Kanda of the Skanda Purana, reiterated by Krishna in the Mahabharata, Prahlada’s son and Mahabali’s very generous father, Virochana, was tricked by Indra disguised as a Brahman into offering his own head.

  • Rama Kills Ravana
Newsletter Archives www.dollsofindia.com Ravana the Great The Legendary Emperor of Lanka Copyright © 2017, DollsofIndia Indian mythology often brings us tales of several wise men and women, many of who were able rulers and administrators. These men and women rose to the helm of their lives and careers, creating an indelible mark in the history and culture of the land. They, however, had just one small failing, which eventually emerged as the root cause for their fall from the heights of success to the depths of despair and, finally, decay. Such is the story of the mighty Ravana; the legendary ruler of Lanka. The Ramayana does not speak much about this powerful demon King, who verily changed the course of the epic itself. While Ravana was born a rakshasa (asura or demon), he emerged as a genius - a scholar of repute; a great musician, especially known for his prowess on the Ravanahatha (a variety of the Veena); and one who successfully ruled over all the three worlds. Ravana The life story of Ravana is truly inspiring. A devout follower of Lord Shiva, he was one of the most powerful beings and rulers of all time. He was known for his wisdom, strength and control over the gods, demons and human beings alike. He is believed to have ruled over the city of Lanka for several hundred years, prior to the emergence of the Ramayana. Yet, the Valmiki Ramayana portrays the demon King in a rather negative light; as a powerful tyrant, who committed evil deeds and, many a time, held the gods at ransom.
