Cult Classic Reefer Madness Returns to Theaters with Hilarious Live Commentary from the Stars of Mystery Science Theater 3000 July 19, 2010 Cult Classic Reefer Madness Returns to Theaters with Hilarious Live Commentary from the Stars of Mystery Science Theater 3000 NCM Fathom, Something Awful and RiffTrax Team Up Again to Present "RiffTrax LIVE: Reefer Madness" in More than 470 Movie Theaters Nationwide CENTENNIAL, Colo., Jul 19, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Fans of the legendary hit show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) and Internet sensation RiffTrax.com are in for a hilarious night of live comedy on Thursday, Aug. 19 when NCM Fathom, Something Awful and RiffTrax team up again to present RiffTrax LIVE: Reefer Madness at 8:00 p.m. Eastern / 7:00 p.m. Central / 6:00 p.m. Mountain / 8:00 p.m. Pacific (tape delayed) with an encore on Tuesday, August 24. The creative team behind MST3K - Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett - will reunite on the big screen for an evening of LIVE riffing on the 1936 cult classic feature that warned generations of Americans against the horrors of excessive marijuana consumption. Audiences will also receive access to FREE digital goodies after the event including a downloadable short, avatars and a digital photo of the guys. Tickets are available at participating theater box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com. For a complete list of theater locations and prices, please visit the website (theaters and participants are subject to change). "Reefer Madness is bizarre, paranoid and hilarious, everything we like in a movie," said Michael J. Nelson, RiffTrax creator and former host of the Emmy-nominated, Peabody Award-winning Mystery Science Theater 3000. "I've seen it a hundred times and I still find it funny--and I've never even smoked pot!" Originally titled Tell Your Children and financed by a church group, Reefer Madness was intended as a morality tale about the dangers of cannabis use. The story follows a group of high school students who are coerced by pushers into trying marijuana; the catalyst for an ill-fated party that soon descends into madness. Soon after Reefer Madness' initial filming in 1936, notorious exploitation filmmaker Dwain Esper turned up the intensity with the addition of salacious insert shots. The final piece offers scenes of accidental murder, suicide and vehicular manslaughter. Reefer Madness gained new life in the 1970s when recreational marijuana enthusiasts discovered it and circulated the piece as entertainment. The film's over-the-top moralizing and wild exaggeration of the effects of cannabis make it a perfect target for the comic wit of the RiffTrax gang. For the first time ever, fans have the chance to hear their own joke used in the live event by submitting a riff for one - or all ten of the short clips available for riffing from Reefer Madness. Riffs may be submitted at www.RiffTrax.com/contest through Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific. One winner for each clip will be selected by the RiffTrax guys and each winner will receive a RiffTrax Swag Bag and an on-screen credit in the event. "As fans have seen in our Fathom events before, the RiffTrax guys are comedic geniuses and seeing them improvise this so effectively live on 40-foot screens is astounding," said Dan Diamond, vice president of NCM Fathom. "With its legendary camp, Reefer Madness is the perfect platform for Michael, Kevin and Bill to create yet another hilarious experience for fans in theatres." RiffTrax LIVE: Reefer Madness will be shown in select movie theaters including AMC Entertainment Inc., Celebration! Cinema, Cinemark USA Inc., Cobb Theatres, Goodrich Quality Theatres, Hollywood Theaters, Kerasotes Showplace Theatres, Marcus Theatres, National Amusements, Rave Motion Pictures and Regal Entertainment Group movie theaters, as well as Palace Cinema 9 (South Burlington, VT), through NCM's exclusive Digital Broadcast Network. MST3K spent a total of 11 seasons on Comedy Central and the Sci Fi Channel in the late 1980s through 1999. The series featured a man and his robot sidekicks trapped in space by an evil scientist and forced to watch terrible science fiction B- movies. In each episode, the three make fun of each film, providing hilarious commentary or "riffing." After the show's run ended, Nelson created RiffTrax in 2006 to continue the "riffing" on blockbuster films such as Star Wars: Episode I and Star Trek. RiffTrax are downloadable online and can be played along with the film, providing a unique and amusing commentary throughout the course of the movie. The RiffTrax team made their big screen debut last August with RiffTrax Live: Plan 9 from Outer Space and returned in December 2009 with RiffTrax LIVE: Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza! • Reefer Madness in Federal Court: an Overview of How Federal Courts Are Dealing with Cannabis Litigation and Why It Is Necessary to “Dig Into the Weeds”
Marvis Formatting Complete (Do Not Delete) 7/27/2019 4:36 PM REEFER MADNESS IN FEDERAL COURT: AN OVERVIEW OF HOW FEDERAL COURTS ARE DEALING WITH CANNABIS LITIGATION AND WHY IT IS NECESSARY TO “DIG INTO THE WEEDS” by Blake Marvis* Litigation stemming from the state-legal cannabis industry has presented many unique questions for federal courts to grapple with. Can federal courts provide equitable relief to state-legal cannabis litigants, despite being in violation of federal law? Can workers in the state-legal cannabis industry sue their employ- ers to recover required minimum wage under federal statutes? Is a contract that is made in a state-legal cannabis market automatically void? This Com- ment examines the precarious nature of state-legal cannabis litigation in fed- eral courts through a dissection of how litigation has progressed. It also exam- ines the framing of the arguments made in cannabis disputes. Although the litigation related to the state-legal cannabis industry has been very diverse, this Comment attempts to provide a synthesis of the fundamental principles courts are viewing these disputes from. This Comment argues that two relatively dis- tinct views have emerged as a result of the unclear legal status of the state-legal cannabis industry. One view, the “Broad View,” focuses on how federal ille- gality creates broad barriers to otherwise clear legal rights that “normal” busi- ness industry participants would have. The other view, the “Narrow View,” focuses on the uniqueness of the state-legal cannabis industry and attempts to navigate the issues carefully and narrowly. This Comment further argues for adoption of the Narrow View from both a legal and policy perspective.

POLICING KNOWLEDGE IN THE WAR ON DRUGS: A FOUCAULDIAN ANALYSIS OF THE MARIJUANA DISCOURSE IN THE LATE 1960S AND EARLY 1970S A Thesis by ETHAN RICE BA, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, 2013 Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER of ARTS in HISTORY Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Corpus Christi, Texas May 2017 © Ethan Cody Rice All Rights Reserved May 2017 POLICING KNOWLEDGE IN THE WAR ON DRUGS: A FOUCAULDIAN ANALYSIS OF THE MARIJUANA DISCOURSE IN THE LATE 1960S AND EARLY 1970S A Thesis by ETHAN RICE This thesis meets the standards for scope and quality of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and is hereby approved. Sandrine Sanos, PhD Laura Muñoz , PhD Chair Committee Member Anthony Quiroz, PhD Committee Member May 2017 ABSTRACT Many histories of marijuana prohibition see the 1960s and 1970s as a time of relatively lax attitudes towards marijuana use, with scholars pointing to a softening of the penalties for low- level offenses. However, focusing solely on policy and failing to scrutinize how the discourse on drugs worked to marginalize users and underwrite enforcement efforts overlooks the extent to which this era represents a time of increasing obsession with controlling marijuana and other drug use. Michel Foucault’s work on the relationship between knowledge and power provides a useful framework through which this discourse can be elucidated. Foucault describes discourse as both productive and disciplinary: it produces categories of knowledge and simultaneously regulates what can be known through what it includes, excludes, or limits. Thus, it exerts a power distinct from the coercive power of the law: the power to determine the acceptability of a behavior and what is known about it.

The average consumer can easily create and edit videos, and post them online. Inevitably many of these posted videos incorporate existing copyrighted content, raising questions of infringement, derivative versus transformative use, fair use, and parody. This article looks at several such works, with its main focus on one category of examples: the Downfall Hitler meme.

THAT STATEMENT CONNECTS the modern Steam Punk Movement, The Jetsons, Metropolis, Disney's Tomorrowland, and the other items that we are celebrating this weekend. Some of those past futures were unpleasant: the Days of Future Past of the X-Men are a shadow of a future that the adult Kate Pryde wanted to avoid when she went back to the present day of the early 1980s. Others set goals and dreams; the original Star Trek gave us the dreams and goals of a bright and shiny future t h a t h a v e i n s p i r e d generations of scientists and engineers. Robert Heinlein took us to the Past through Tomorrow in his Future History series, and Asimov's Foundation built planet-wide cities and we collect these elements of the past for the future. We love the fashion of the Steampunk movement; and every year someone is still asking for their long-promised jet pack. We take the ancient myths of the past and reinterpret them for the present and the future, both proving and making them still relevant today. Science Fiction and Fantasy fandom is both nostalgic and forward-looking, and the whole contradictory nature is in this year's theme. Many of the years that previous generations of writers looked forward to happened years ago; 1984, 1999, 2001, even 2010. The assumptions of those time periods are perhaps out-of-date; technology and society have passed those stories by, but there are elements that still speak to us today. It is said that the Golden Age of Science Fiction is when you are 13.

Marijuana was said to be ‘a new drug that maddens victims’ and it was sensationally described as an ‘evil sex drug’.
