The data were gathered through the annual report forms for fiscal year 1987-1988 that were returned by 895 libraries of an estimated total of 1,200 California libraries, excluding school libraries. Presented in the statistical tables are data on activities (e.g., interlibrary loans borrowed and lent, circulation, and total volumes); income; expenditures; staffing; and collections. These data are organized by library type and area population. Also provided is a state summary of library statistics for the fiscal year 19E7-1988, plus the two preceding years. The data reported include total operating expenditures, salaries, library materials, full-time staff equivalents, total volumes, circulation, interlibrary loan (ILL) borrowing, ILL lending, and total number of reference questions answered during the year. A list of the libraries represented concludes the report. Although the statistics program and these publications are promoted as widely as we can, participation for most is voluntary (public libraries are required by the Education Code to report annually to the State Librarian) and some choose not to do so. This makes the state summary less than complete. Libraries failing to return the report form two years in a row are dropped from the freepublications distribution list.California cooperates with the National Center for Education Statistics in the collection of uniform library statistical data nationwide. For fiscal year 1987-1988 we have reports from 895 libraries. We estimate there are at least 1,200 libraries in operation inCalifornia, exclusive of school libraries, so data in these publications are about 75% complete. By type of library, the number reporting are: 169 public libraries with 2,887 public service outlets. By jurisdictions, there are 47 county, 106 city, five combined city-county, and 11 district public libraries.By level of service, there are: 163 main libraries. Administrative headquarters are not included, and some county or district libraries have no main library. 601 branch libraries. A branch is an extension library open some part of each of five days a week, has at least 1,400 squgre feet of floor space, a general book collection of at least 7,000 volumes, and is staffed with the equivalent of at least one librarian and one clerical employee during hours openfor service. 338 library stations. A station is a library structure smaller than a branch, providing a lower level of service. 1,785 mobile library stops.A mobile library stop is a location visited by a bookmobile or other traveling library. There are 75 mobile libraries in operation this year. Combining main, branch and station figures, there are 1,102 fixed public library outlets. Emeryville and Piedmont are included with Oakland. Glenn County is served by Orland and Willows city libraries. Hillsborough is served by Burlingame and San Mateo city libraries. Mariposa Co. is included with Tuolumne Co. Santa Barbara Co. is served by the three city libraries of Lompoc, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria. Sierra Co. is included with Plumas Co. 4 197 academic libraries: 29 state supported academic libraries. 102 community college libraries. 66 private academic libraries. 471 special 32 legal libraries. 78 medical libraries. 131 libraries operated by for profit organizations. 74 libraries operated by non-profit organizations. 20 popular libraries at U.S. armed forces installations. 16 special libraries at U.S. installations. 49 resident libraries at state institutions and schools. 41 special libraries at state government offices. 30 branch libraries of academic institutions. 58 countv±law libraries. • BIBLIOGRAPHY of the HISTORY of LIBRARIES in CALIFORNIA, 1973-2003 Introduction
Page 1 of 198 BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HISTORY OF LIBRARIES IN CALIFORNIA, 1973-2003 by Suzanne M. Stauffer, Ph.D. Introduction This bibliography updates Hannah J. Kunkle’s Bibliography of the History of Libraries in California, which included material through 1972. As with that earlier work, the purpose of this bibliography is to introduce librarians, library historians, and students of California library history to numerous sources on California library development. For this reason, it is limited to selections of published primary and secondary sources from 1973 through 2003 which are readily available to the researcher. The coverage includes information on public, academic, school, and special libraries in California, the functions and activities of those libraries and the librarians who serve in them, library education and educators in the state, works and articles by and about California librarians, and the various California library associations. Journal articles, monographs, pamphlets, documents, research papers, theses, and dissertations have been included. The bibliography does not include: Archival materials; newspaper articles; acquisition and selection policies; catalogues or lists of special collections materials; bibliographies on California; union lists; guides to libraries; minutes and annual reports to trustees and boards; displays and exhibits; association reports; library association constitutions; conferences; library clipping files and scrapbooks; reports of the Trustees of the California State Library; Journals of the California Senate and Assembly; and local directories. Unlike Kunkle’s work, this bibliography does include activities of Friends of the Library groups, announcements of awards and library appointments, relevant letters to the editor, and brief obituary notices, in order to serve as a resource for biographical information California librarians.
