Locust Grove is where Louisville begins — a place for discovery, for growing, for preservation. Built circa 1792, this house was here at the beginning of Louisville as a city and Kentucky as a state. Open for tours from February through December, Locust Grove is the perfect spot to explore the early nineteenth century through the daily lives of the Croghan and Clark families who lived here and the enslaved families who worked here. Our small farm distillery demonstrates the intersection between agriculture and alcohol at special events throughout the year, taking guests through the step by step process of turning grain, fruit, and water into spirits using 19th century methods. The Gardeners’ Fair, from Friday, May 10 through Sunday, May 12, connects 19th century farming to 21st century gardens and will feature a demonstration and discussion of our farm distillery. Locust Grove is a place for YOU. Come learn something old every day.

Locust Grove is a 55- acre 18th century historic site located at 561 Blankenbaker Lane. For more information, visit locustgrove.org

CRAFT BEER, CRAFT MUSIC

Being first is great in a race, but it can be pretty scary for a business. On the other hand, it can be very rewarding to be able to combine and present your passions to the world, or at least to Louisville. Luckily, our passions are beer, music, and food, so at least we knew a lot of people share those same passions. Now, music mavens have a new music venue, hop heads have a nice place to sip their suds, and foodies have a place to nosh on some great fare from Mayan Street Food. And when these three worlds collide, it’s pure magic. Or, as we like to call it, pure Gravely, where fresh beer and live music inspire a one-of-a-kind atmosphere where nightlife flourishes.

Louisville Native Makes a Splash with Caffeinated Sparkling Water While attending medical school at the University of Louisville, Louisville native John Mittel often found himself up late at night studying and in need of a mental boost. Uninterested in sugar-laden energy drinks or sodas, he sought something that would quench his thirst, and provide the benefits of a caffeinated beverage, but without the negative side effects. When he realized that no such product currently existed, he teamed up with his partner Tom O’Grady to create Phocus, a first of its kind caffeinated sparkling water with zero calories, sugar, artificial flavors or preservatives. Now, a little over a year since launch, the brightly colored cans can be found lining the shelves of local outposts like Heine Brother’s Coffee, Paul’s Fruit Market, Rainbow Blossom, and Kroger. You can pick up Phocus in four flavors including Grapefruit, Cucumber, Blood Orange and Yuzu & Lime, as well as Natural (an unflavored sparkling water).
